I think Messi needs just one goal to pass the legend Batistuta who is the top goal scorer for Argentina and I think Messi will score against the Netherlands as they are not well known for having a solid defense,that was always their Achilles's heel where they suffered a lot from the not so good defending.Argentina is well known for scoring goals and most probably will score against Netherlands with Messi having a really high chance of becoming the best goal scorer as I think Mbappe will have difficulties to score that easily against England but we will see.

Cody Gakpo has all the advantage for the Golden Boot. I see the Dutch team going as far as the semi-finals or finals. I would pick Ronaldo, Rashford and Richardson of Brazil to compete for the golden boot. I do not see Messi in the race for the golden boot but I see him winning the most valuable player in the competition due to his leadership qualities and skills he has portrayed in the tournament so far.

In Messi's several matches with Argentina in this world cup, he had many opportunities that could not be converted into goals.  one of them, when he had a chance at the penalty spot against Poland. he failed, at least, Messi has 2-4 shots on target every game. Messi could have been the top scorer, if every opportunity he had could be converted properly. even so, I can understand that at the age of 35 years, the sharpness and accuracy are decreasing.

by the way, don't underestimate the Netherlands. because after all, so far the Netherlands has appeared very nicely. they have quite solid teamwork, a front line whose sharpness should not be underestimated.

In this world cup so far Mbappe looks to be way more aggressive than Messi and is likely to score more from this point on.  I like France's chance to move deep into this tourny than Argentina.  Mbappe is definitely ready to take the reigns of "best player" from Messi and Ronaldo.  We are witnessing the passing of the torch.  This kid might end up better than both of them.

I agree with you, Messi is doing very well not minding that he is getting old, I am predicting that he will be the highest goal scorer in this world cup.

I'm not good at predicting but I'm sure Mbappe will add another goal in the match against England later in the quarter-finals, I think the France vs England match will have a lot of goals scored, Messi won't be able to catch up with that of course if Argentina loses against the Netherlands later

The four players that are on equal goals are from countries capable of being the world cup winners but I think the top goal scorer will be determined by the performance of the best two countries that may likely play the final of the game. Going by the performance of the teams and the individual performance of the players listed by the op,  I think my prediction will be in favour of Mbappe or Messi because one out of the two countries are likely to play in the finals, and with their recent form and goal scoring ability they are likely to score in their next games and if they get to semi-finals it then means that the award of the highest goals scorer will be given to one of them.

I don't think Messi will find it very easy scoring to meet up with Mbappe in the next match. The Dutch side is not going to be free scoring for Argentina because they only conceive one goal from the group stage and they top the table with 7 points, they have good forward to attack the Argentina defence on counter if they open up any such opportunity. So Messi will get difficulty in scoring freely.
