The measure permits police to deploy robots equipped with explosives in extreme circumstances.

Dr Catherine Connolly, from the group Stop Killer Robots, said the move was a "slippery slope" that could distance humans from killing.

The city's police - the SFPD - told the BBC they do not currently operate any robots equipped with lethal force.

They said though that there may be future scenarios in which lethal force could be used by a robot.

this is the news that made me think about whether "killer robots" will be the police in the future,, and can the police who use this be able to guarantee that the use of "killer robots" will minimize the potential for victims of misdirected targets to occur, robots are still developing, I am pessimistic that this will be the best solution in society!

They have not been developed to that dangerous level, current AI robots also only stop at assisting humans in difficult or life-threatening situations. They are not as scary as the characters in the fantasy movies created by Marvel, I don't think there will be a real life version of Ultron.
But with the current development of AI, what I am more worried about is that they will gradually replace people in working environments, and people will gradually lose their jobs and positions in society. That's the flip side of technology becoming so modern.

Elon Musk, “cutting"edge” AI is "actually “far more" dangerous than nukes.”
I understand the point against and for of them, but when Elon or is talking about artificial intelligence, he isn't talking about this kind of artificial intelligence. But more in a self aware scifi way. And i have hard time believing that he understands AI tech well enough to have any sort of meaningful opinion about this. And yes i know he owns cutting edge ai tech firms. But i still wouldn't give his views too much weight. He isn't the engineer building them nor he could.

Ai in the sense of this tech makes sense a lot. There has been many shootings by police and frankly i would be more afraid of a human police then ai police. Even in a case where ai makes an error it would be fraction of errors humans do when they wield a gun adrenaline running in their system while they need to make judgements in a fraction of a second. Naturally they want to stay alive so they rather shoot first.

Remember one thing. As Stalin said a long time ago, "It's not he who votes that counts, but he who counts the votes." And millions died because of it.

It's the same with AI. It's not the great computation ability of the AI that counts, but he that controls the AI. Million (billions?) will die.

Though this wasn't the first time i will be hearing about the intentions in place for the engagement of killer robots but only forbthe purpose of war and not even as for policing the society, killer robot could be equiped dangerously unlike the normal robots one cannsend to deliver messages, the use of killler robot can only be employed on extreme situations where no alternative is left in winning a battle against human race and if such attacks can only be on alliens invasion which is something terrible for only killer robots to face such only provided if such ever exist or in some future to come.

Robots can never replace humans because they are not creative or emotional. At least humans are careful when they are handling a crime situation because they would be held responsible for their actions, but robots can malfunction and cause grave danger. Humans can creatively handle a situation based on the circumstances surrounding the events but robots are programmed to act similarly regardless of the peculiarity of the situation.

Robots can be deployed to handle dangerous situations such as hostage-taking or kidnapping by armed criminals. We have had issues where police had to wait for hours outside a school building because it was very dangerous to enter the school premises while a gunman kept shooting innocent school children. A robot with a clear order to eliminate the gunman would have disarmed the gunman.

But sending robots to handle protests or trivial issues might turn out disastrous. I don't see robots as the future of policing, they might complement the efforts of humans in the nearest future.

Robots are only good for war to ensure that the citizens are safe instead of using the armies, robots can be used. When it comes to physiological issues robots can not fit in because they were program to carry out a task. Robots don't have reasoning faculty which makes them not capable to replace human security. In everything made by man has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Maybe we should make killer robot that only kill off killer robots that kill people.

I would kinda like a world full of peaceful robots... robots that could do every task around for free, including fix themselves/each-other as they wear out.

Everybody could go on welfare, and collect enough to have all the fun, and world travel as he wanted. We could even have Ukraine robots battling it out with Russian robots... for all those folks who enjoy wars.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful life?

There was a police department in the U.S. that strapped explosives to a robot to kill a mass murder: https://www.cnn.com/2016/07/12/us/dallas-police-robot-c4-explosives/index.html

And in fact, it worked. Strap a bunch of C4 to a remote controlled vehicle, then bring it close to the suspect and detonate. Sure, there might be a little clean up required afterwards but it did kill the guy.

Next, they might strap gatling guns to these robots so it won't make such a mess. A small taste as to what law enforcement might look like in the future. Then when these devices get AI software installed, that's when the real fun begins.

I wish this can be deployed in Africa where policing is strongly abused and misinterpreted. Robots are more advanced and will help in policing because they will be more transparent. I wish The city's police will just implement it immediately so it becomes popular and other countries  will deploy it.

i don't know how the political situation is in the African continent but what i hear there (countries on the African continent) there are still very many criminals, if this is immediately implemented by the police there then it is possible that criminals will also try to make robots to fight the police also because we know that not everyone in the police force is a good person.

Here is the answer. And it is an answer that many nations and individual people understand.

If you are going to be the boss of your nation, you absolutely MUST give your people freedom to a great extent. You at least have to give them enough freedom so that THEY think they are free. If you do this, they will support you forever. If you don't, you will fail... even if you seem to be successful with your people.

i support every form of freedom because it is part of human rights but too much freedom is just a time bomb, as happened in countries that free their citizens to use weapons, there are many levels of murder that have occurred or a country that supports LGBT will only experience a decrease in the birth rate.  just imagine the political situation that is currently happening in many countries on the continent of Africa and if they use killer robots, it just adds another new misery.

In America, answer has been built right into the Constitution and law. But the people have been trained by movies and the courts to not use it very much. The answer is the 12-person jury.

In the US, the 12-person jury can decide anything they want regarding any case that they are the JUDGES for. The can contradict almost any law that exists, and interpret or re-interpret what any law means right down to the Constitution, itself. The important part is that their decision only works with the current case.

For example. If you drive 125 MPH in a 25 zone, get arrested, and take it to trial, the jury (if you require one) could let you off scott free if you can convince them to do so. But they won't let you convince them, because they don't want some joker driving past their house at 125 MPH.

Common people in a jury have sense. And every, Every, EVERY supposed wrongdoing can be brought before a jury for adjudication. The fear of potential jury action is what has made the US so successful within. But the courts have supposedly shot the knowledge of jury action down in the eyes of the people, so that few average people use it any longer.

Police killer robots in America is something that will be struck down by the populace, through juries, if not on the general principle of "innocent until proven guilty."
