Hi,

I am new to lightning. I just finished installing c-lightning on my full node, but I cannot find any sensible mobile wallet that can connect to it using an onion address? It seems that Zap is defunct according to GitHub, Spark has serious security issues according to the reviews on the Google Play Store, and Zeus does not seem to be in a working state. All the other wallets I have found seem to only support LND? Is there a practical way to use C-Lightning with a phone?

Thanks for your help!

Assuming that there is working mobile wallet for C-Lightning, how do people use it in practice? Is it through RTL?

So initially I thought that wallets could connect directly to CLN, but after coming across RTL, I learned that the CLN's REST API is required. Another possibility would have been through CLN's JSON ROC I assume? RTL uses the REST API to control CLN. My Zeus wallet is now able to connect to the REST API as well.

Spark works reasonably well and works with CLN's built in APIs.

From reviews I have read, it said that the spark wallet can be used on Android without entering a phone's PIN...

There is a good reason why almost everyone switched to LND, and question is if all of them are open source reproducible, so I would be carful using some random wallets.
I am not sure what mobile wallets support C-Lightning, but are you sure you checked all the wallets that are available on this website?

RTL uses the REST API to control CLN. My Zeus wallet is now able to connect to the REST API as well.
I've only used my Core Lightning nodes through SSH and RTL so far, but if Zeus works, I may give it a try.

Spark works reasonably well and works with CLN's built in APIs.
That looks neat as well, but more like an RTL replacement; requiring extra software on the node, right?

All the other wallets I have found seem to only support LND? Is there a practical way to use C-Lightning with a phone?
There is a good reason why almost everyone switched to LND
Would you care to elaborate?

By the way; in my impression, not 'everybody switched to LND', I do know some relatively big node operators who actually switched from LND to Core Lightning. One reason was the much better performance and efficiency of CLN.

Here is quick comparison table posted below, but in essence Core Lightning is developed and maintained by Blockstream and some people could have issue with that.
I am not saying Core Lightning is bad but there is much more things built on top of LND at the moment, however you can use anything you like more.
There are pros and cons for both of them, and Core Lightning is much better if you have low spec hardware for your node.

Yes; I know. They pushed a lot to get included in platforms like Umbrel to be the default Lightning node and such, but objectively speaking, I find CLN the better software.
Besides the little WEF story, they've also actively pushed back against stuff like BOLT12, without a satisfactory response.

There are pros and cons for both of them, and Core Lightning is much better if you have low spec hardware for your node.
Even with good hardware; if you ran a large node, LND started to get dodgy. When the database got too large (few GB) - no matter if you have terabytes on hand - it slowed the whole node down to a halt. I believe by now, they support different databases, but it was a serious issue even like a year ago.

All the other wallets I have found seem to only support LND? Is there a practical way to use C-Lightning with a phone?

I just went through https://www.lightningnode.info/comparison and didn't find a 'good reason everyone switched to LND' you mentioned.

Hmmm I didn't know that (or I forgot), and they sure have to put they fingers everywhere, like they did with FTX and ethereum, so it's hard to avoid them.
Maybe there are some other alternatives for LND and Core Lightning, but I didn't heard about them.

I just went through https://www.lightningnode.info/comparison and didn't find a 'good reason everyone switched to LND' you mentioned.
That was just simple comparison, and I think you answered yourself what that ''good reason'' is when you mentioned wef-lnd in previous post Wink
There is probably more money and funding there, at the moment.

Yeah, I don't know; for me it's most important that the software runs and works well. And - at least last I checked - CLN was objectively better than LND.
Sure, we may not like not everything Blockstream does (similar to Lightning Labs), but the software doesn't have database issues, runs faster, is easier to extend through plugins and the Core Lightning developers don't do weird stuff (unlike LND with its custom / non-spec stuff, stopping BOLTs etc).

Indeed, that's a red flag, but I want to know more about their intentions. What should make you stay away from LND? The first thing that comes to mind is this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5387173.0. Lightning labs actually thought of switching to closed-source for a moment.

WEF is funding this development for a yet unknown reason. Smells fishy, because they're the same people who encourage on transitioning to CBDC.

Good that you bring it up again! Maybe we should start making a list..
One more addition from my side is how they opposed (or still do?) https://bolt12.org/ for no comprehensible reason and other (in part privacy-related) protocol suggestions in a similar fashion (which I hinted at earlier). Meanwhile adding custom stuff that is only supported by LND.

WEF is funding this development for a yet unknown reason. Smells fishy, because they're the same people who encourage on transitioning to CBDC.
Are they actually funded by WEF? To my knowledge, they added Lightning Labs to their website, after which LL claimed they've just been 'mentioned' on the website. Later, I figured out that they 'received an award' by the WEF and even did workshops & interviews with Lightning Labs.

And they are the same people who said that you will own nothing and you will be happy; they also proposed many other crazy things like drastic change of food sources  Tongue
It's funny that same organization was very well connected with Scam Bankman and FTX exchange, so no wonder it's all connected.
They are probably running or supporting bunch of Lightning Nodes, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some big changes with LN, and I thought this happened today when I saw this on lookintobitcoin website:

These are the wallet for lightning in which I can recommend to you mate such as follows:

1. Blue wallet
2. Zeus wallet
3. Breez wallet
4. Wallet of Satoshi
5. Zap wallet

Source: https://cointikka.com/bitcoin-lightning-network-wallets-for-mobile/

I hope this could give an answer to your question, good luck Wink

This doesn't answer OP's question since you and the source doesn't mention which wallet use C-Lightning as it's backend. In detail,
1. Zeus wallet already mentioned by OP.
2. Zap desktop wallet use LND, not C-Lightning. See https://github.com/LN-Zap/zap-desktop/blob/master/docs/ADVANCED.md#lightning-network-daemon-lnd.
3. BlueWallet use LNDHub, which is wrapper for LND. See https://bluewallet.io/lndhub/.
4. Breez wallet also use LND. See https://doc.breez.technology/Overview-for-Developers.html
5. Wallet of Satoshi is custodial wallet, so obviously there's no option to connect to your own LN node/server.
