After the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the country's newly redesigned currency, counterfeit notes also started to circulate.

It's crucial to arm oneself with the knowledge necessary to tell a fake naira note from a legitimate one.

There are variations to watch out for in order to distinguish authentic Naira notes from counterfeit ones; this does not require academic knowledge.

You can tell real Naira notes from fake Naira notes by following these five easy guidelines.

Quote
1. Check the texture: If the texture of the Naira note is soft and the image in it appears dull, you have the right to be concerned, reject it and demand another one.
This means that you should be sensitive to the touch of the money you are given when involved in any transaction.

2. Observe the gold foil: The N1000 note has a gold foil on the right side, just near the CBN governor’s signature. If you scratch the gold foil of a fake note it will peel off instantly but the gold foil on the original note does not peel.

3. Use water or other liquid: You can differentiate fake currency from the original by using water or other liquid. Scammers release fake money and the colours they use in printing counterfeits are soluble in water and some other liquids.

If you are not certain about the originality of a Naira note, dip it in water or petrol and scrub it gently. The colours will change immediately if it is fake money. The colours of counterfeit money will wash off like an artwork painted with watercolour.

Again, the moment you immerse it in water, the paper becomes messed up. It will get rough and look more like a paper mache. However, the real note will not look like this when immersed in water or any liquid.

4. Examine the ribbon/thread: There is a thread which appears like a ribbon on all Naira notes, running from the top to the bottom.

In real notes, this thread can be felt with a touch. It is more noticeable on old Naira notes. However, in fake notes, there is something that looks like the thread but it is not.

In the counterfeit notes, what is there is just a straight-line painting that looks like the thread in the original notes. If you scratch the painting, it will peel off like the solver panel on recharge cards.

5. Use mercury bulbs: Some qualities of the paper Naira notes cannot be seen with the naked eye. These features are only in original Naira notes, and one cannot see them except with the help of mercury bulbs.

To the best of my knowledge i believe the newly introduced notes have no much difference from the old ones than the change in colour, except if the kind of printing materials the paper nite is being printed upon is different from the former type like switching from the paper to polymer or the paper quality been slightly different from the old one by thickness, else there shouldn't be any difficulty in identifying the fake one from the original since it's just a change in colour and not the design or pattern.

Then they made big mistake while planning this stuff. They should have changed the entire design and most importantly they must have change the denominations on the notes man. That was the easiest way to go for this one. I mean if you have 100N notes then they should have introduced 500N, if they had 1000N then they should have gone for the 2000N. I am talking about any viable option that best fits as per the costs circulation within the country. But they should not have created the same denominations again.

This is not upgrade, this is just improvising the current printing. An upgrade would have had current notes / denominations going off the limits.  Smiley

I didn't see any new redesigned note in the Nigerian newly resigned currency. It is only the colour is changed. The old currency or design is much more better than the new redesigned currency. In Nigeria, every government wants to do which is always contrary to the citizens. there was no need for the colour-riot. The CBN is saying that, the redesigned will reduce the country's inflation, and I didn't see it from that way but I saw more inflation. Only solution nto Nigeria inflation is the radical approach by the government to reduce the prices of good and services. And not to redesign the currency.

Knowledge and information is the key my friend, don't sleep on it when they share it with you. I have not go through all the updates that central bank has shared with commercial banks to disseminate to their customers but I have received more than 3 videos of POS merchants complaining how the new Naira notes has increased the rate of counterfeit currency and I have learn how to avoid them from the videos, like the years on the money, the stamp from CBN and fake colourings of the fake notes. It's a good thing if you check the official one before you become a victim, it's the Christmas season, stay safe.

I don't know how manage that the redesign Naira is already having fake notes when it barely got launched. This can tell us that the system have been compromised alot that it is difficult to get things done. Well I am yet to see the notes and feel it before I could know and master those features but the redesigned and the old that is being phased array has almost same resemblance.

Even if they make a 1000 changes to it there will still be counterfeit of them although not so quick as the current one. Paper money can never fight off counterfeit one just has to learn on the difference from the original one to stay save. This is the main reason why we are advocating for bitcoin.

Funny enough do you know even a color change is redesign. I usually disagree with most of this current government policies but I second this one. If you divide the total paper naira in Nigeria into 3, 2/3 of it is outside the bank and that means most are in the hand of wrong people and this could cause devaluation of the currency

Would you look at that, I thought the reason behind the government's sudden redesign of the currency was to combat counterfeiting and inflation.
But it seems the issues persist despite the redesign, I think the government will have to devise other means to address this issue with counterfeiting because even with the guidelines you provided above, many people will still have problems identifying the real from the fake.

Changing or redesign of the naira notes is not going to change anything. How far have we gone with the change of our naira notes but yet our currency have no value.
If only they changed the whole naira notes and it turns out to be that the value has come to play it would have been better but is like moving in circles, it pisses me off to wake up in the morning and get to hear that the new notes has been released came out with fake notes. The way things are going is not  encouraging at all.

It does briefly reset the problem of counterfeit notes but since printing technology is catching up every day they were required to introduce many variations like holographic or similar hard to make features.  If they have not done this there is little hope of defeating the copying of common currency by those who can print.
My guess is the lower value of the notes might be on purpose as it means  more effort to duplicate and bypass the quality measures for what is not a large value per note, its less attractive in the margin vs difficulty to copy.   Euro large value notes for example were withdrawn as were being often used in criminal deals for compact transfer.

The new naira note is an improvement from the former one. The one thousand naira note has up to twenty security features, the five hundred naira has about thirteen and the two hundred naira has about ten. The CBN also claimed that the new notes are more durable and would be very difficult to fake. I know these security features would be potent for a few years until currency counterfeit experts would be able to develop the necessary technology that would be potent to print the fake ones. But the truth is that the new currency is not in the same class as world-leading currencies like the dollar, pound, or euro.

I do not know, but most of us will not deal with Nigerian cash or what is known as "Nigeria Naira", and therefore knowing the insurance signs of that currency will not help us much.
Such posts may be useful to members of the local board and not to a multinational forum.
But what amazes me is why the design has been redesigned. Isn't the state's policy expanding monetary policies?
In general, its insurance policy is similar to most paper money.

The new Naria note have not serve for the purpose of its redesign, the redesign is to get rid of the previous counterfeit notes and help in circulation of money in the country, since politicians are hoarding cash in their various houses. I come to see it that these aims might not be achieved by the Nigeria government, reason is that there is already a counterfeit of the new redesigned Naria notes. Who is behind this nobody knows.

I guess an insider might the involved in this,or some rich men on the top are supporting corruption whole heatedly because a poor or average man does not have the resources to print money but can only help in circulating it.

It's good to see that Nigeria is taking steps to counteract money laundering, as it is the very foundation of security for a nation to know that their money supply is correct and controlled. I guess the government has determined that the older notes were increasingly vulnerable to copying and they needed to step it up a gear, hopefully the new notes are cheap enough to produce that the benefits don't outweigh the cost. It's even more important in countries that are heavily reliant on using paper money, which some sectors of the Nigerian economy can be, but even at the street level it is a surprisingly digital economy especially for the youngest generations.

I guess an insider might the involved in this,or some rich men on the top are supporting corruption whole heatedly because a poor or average man does not have the resources to print money but can only help in circulating it.

Same question I do ask if is the government that are involved in all these counterfeit notes that came out. If they're involved, how are they gaining from it? The truth is nobody can say this is where the fake printed notes are coming out from, anything that concerns this fake money I'll blame it on the CBN GOVERNOR because I see no reason why the fake and original note came out almost the same week.

The system I think has been compromised that is what can lead to that. There could be insiders in the apex bank doing the sabotage to the government. The government need to flush out bad eggs from her system otherwise the sabotage will continue and that is affecting the economy. The confidence in Naira is falling and that has affected also the exchange against the dollar.

Thanks for the information on how to identify the new naira note; as I speak, the new currency is available, and I'm very excited about changing the currency in Nigeria because I've heard a lot of news about arresting criminals who tried to bring out a large amount of money for exchange, and they were arrested; I believe that changing the currency will make people aware of the thief in the society.
