Coin Gecko now a SPAM site

Literally EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into Coin Gecko now I get this annoying popUp



How to stop it ?

I got Total AdBlock Chrome extension ( I think it's free for 24 hours ) and it seemed to work SOMETIMES, not always, in fact... I'm pretty sure I still got the Coin Gecko PopUp a few times right after I added Total AdBlock.
I'm now thinking just switching to Coin Market Cap to avoid this incredibly annoying popUP, only problem is Coin Market Cap won't let me display the token value in other currencies, only in US Dollars. I find that potentially more annoying than the Pop Up...

It maybe a new feature on Coingecko so they want to shill it as much as possible at their website.

Did you miss that on Coinmarketcap, you will get a pop up for "Install Coinmarketcap: Crypto Tracker"?

I believe Coinmarketcap starter that trend as I saw it weeks ago. Coingecko followed that trend but want to compete with Coinmarketcap.

Use brave browser to avoid any type of ads whether they're pop up or banner ads unless there's that feature that they'll put a pop up notification upon every visit.

They have that pop up on the right side too but it's just too small and you can easily close it.

Change your browser? All I get on brave/firefox is the little flashing notification icon in the bottom right, but no add will pop up until you click on it.

You can change currency on CMC, see the currency icon in the top right, between language and day/night icons

Why install some time limited extension (I suppose you will have to pay after 24 hours?) when the best ad content blocker - uBlock Origin[1] - is free and open source? I've been using it for years and it simply does the job well and it's very light on the system. I've browsed CoinGecko with it for the past minutes and no popup appeared. I would advise you to uninstall AdBlock and just install uBlock Origin and try it out for a couple of days.

Ublock Origin is installed in my Firefox browser, which I use on both of my desktop/laptop/cellphones, and it works like wonders. Additionally, as far as I'm aware, pop-up blocking in Firefox is turned on by default^[1], while ublock origin may add an additional layer to block these annoying pop-ups.

Or maybe if you have decided to use firefox, you can also harden[2] it by modifying some of the privacy and security settings on the config tab.

Never saw this popup even once. I'm personally using Brave and FireFox, both with uBlock Origin. Not sure if it's uBlock that's causing it to not appear, but everyone should be running uBlock Origin regardless.

Brave browser is the simplest solution to avoid any kind of ads shown in the websites so utilize it if you really want to avoid ads and stop using Google products to avoid ads and tracking your activities.

Mozila Firefox suggested by many members here but from my personal experience I feel the lag with mozila not sure its experienced by everyone or just by me but brave works fine and chrome for casual surfing.

In which currency you want to see the price? For most of the major coins, there are a lot of alternative through which you can monitor the price in your desired currency. But you can't see the graph there.

It's not about uBlock Origin, because even when I turn it off, I don't see that pop-up when browsing with Firefox.


@Len Saldua, Chrome should block such ads, unless you've given it permission. However, such things are very easy to adjust in the way that suits you best. I suggest that you read the advice on the following link -> Block or allow pop-ups in Chrome

Coingecko works as a tracker too so the pop up is normal, the website works similarly to coinmarketcap but it is snappier and complete compare to Coinmarketcap. If you don't like it then download the coingecko mobile app or switch to coinmarketcap. You can also activate Adblock in your browser settings.

Instead of staying on Chrome and switching to CMC you can start using Firefox which is a superior browser anyway so you can keep using Coingecko (superior price tracking site) without that annoying pop-up (which I never got on Firefox). Win-win situation if you ask me.

I don't understand why you're being so frustrated about something so simple. I've never used Coingecko so I can't relate, but the pop-up is supposed to be a coin tracking tool, not an advertisement, thus, it's not being blocked by the adblock. Perhaps your browser may allow you to block such pop-ups. Coinmarketcap is just fine and allows you to switch between all major currencies on the top right corner of your screen.

Personally, I wouldn't switch to another browser about such a petty issue, due to Gmail synchronisations with Chrome.

If you think that it is a spam site then why don't you stay away from it. They are doing that they think best for their platform like shilling projects or whatever they want to do as long as they earn from it unless they are going to scam money from people then I will be frustrated as well because of that. Showing ads in a site is indeed annoying especially when I watch movies online and too many ads pop-up that will cover the movie and yet there's nothing we can do but to close it and do it again if new ones pop-up again.

How to stop it ?

Very simple way to stop all popups is to install uBlock Origin extension, that works both in Firefox and Chromium based browsers.
With this extension you won't see 99% of ads on whole interenet, not just CoinGecko, but you can also use scripts that block ads or disable javascripts (this can break websites).
I don't see any advertisement on CoinGecko but I guess they are making profit from this advertisement, and with creating account you can collect candies and get some discounts, so it's not all bad.
Brave browser could also work but their adblocker is not blocking all ads.

I don't use CoinGecko on Firefox because that's where I have Facebook. Facebook is notorious for tracking all your activities online so I don't want it to track my DeFi moves.
Anyone here feels safe about using MetaMask and Facebook on the same browser ?

I'm not a user of any of them, but uBlock Origin can be turned off very easily on any website, so if it's causing you problems, just turn it off.

I personally have a bad opinion about MetaMask as well as about FB, but you won't achieve too much privacy and security by using different browsers. We are discussing today that it is necessary to separate entertainment from cryptocurrencies, which means not even using the same computer for both activities. There are various levels of security and privacy, it all depends on how much someone needs it and how important it is to them, because in the end everyone is spying on us.

Ad blocker didn't block it cause it's promotion of site feature than an advert. I wouldn't deem coingecko spam solely because of this.

If you were to go to their support, they'd may be make it less annoying. I have had few interactions with their support, they seemed to listen to consumers.

Most half-decent ad blockers know the difference between a site popup feature versus an ad. But yea, there are rare cases where an ad blocker blocks a necessary script on a website; but you can easily turn off the ad blocker(at least for uBlock Origin, which is the only ad blocker you should be using) for specific websites if functionalities gets messed up.
