I believe that some of the players who go to the Saudi Professional League are just not able to motivate themselves to play on the highest level possible. You could see that even Ronaldo sometimes had motivational issues, which began a little bit when he was playing for Manchester United, but these guys are used to playing on the biggest stages in the football world and they have won it all. When they then find themselves in a team called Al Ittihad or Al Nassr or Al Hilal, I can't see how they manage to get the best out of themselves mentally. For what? I think you are getting my point. It is just not the same anymore. Maybe if they signed contracts with certain stages that then releases a huge financial reward, it could still be a challenge for them.

The Saudi government is willing to spend as much as possible to make the SPL compete with other top leagues.  They targeted and got some players who they think will bring the right publicity and fan base to the league.
