How do you use this forum search engine properly? Occasionally you search for things and the result is not significant and you make a topic on it and you get it's been discussed a few times before, I guess someone needs to teach me how.

if you want more accurate search results I guess you should focus on a specific board.
like you are looking for information about futures trading. You can first go to the trading board, and only then enter your keywords. so the results you will get will be according to the trading board.
because if you search on the forum home page and enter your keywords. it will give you a wide range of information, as well as the search time it will probably take to consume your coffee.

It's only give you less accuracy or even zero since the forum search engine is suck.

You can't really expect the topic you're want to get is posted in appropriate board since some discussion could fit to 2-3 boards, it just depend on the moderator who move it/or the poster is.

Example you want to search about 1xbit scam, scam accusations would be a good section to get it. But if you search on 1xbit official ANN, you will find a lot complaints too that you don't find it on accusations board.

One thing you should note is that the forum is very large and you must not just search without a proper direction or channeling, for instance, if you want to search anything in the board you must click on the section that best fits your finding then open before using the search option, most time it gives you quick response than using the general one. I think so this can be the only solution here you will find all types of data that you want to find, If you notice many times, you can see that if you search something on BitcoinTalk, many results are shown together, Because of which many people feel annoyed. But it seems to me that not being able to search properly can also be a reason.

It could be better, but it is not terrible. I use the forum search engine a lot, particularly when I had come across a post at some point, but vaguely remember some keywords in the title or body of the message and I can efficiently find what I am looking for most of the time.

if you want to search anything in the board you must click on the section that best fits your finding then open before using the search option, most time it gives you quick response than using the general one.

You can achieve this with the forum search and even check multiple boards at a time. For example, if you suspect a thread to have been made about abc topic in Bitcoin discussion or economics board, then you can search for the keywords in both boards and also indicate the time period to search through.

I use it quite a bit, though depending on what I want to find I may resort to using Google straight out with the "site:bitcointalk.org" directive. Normally I’d use the forum search engine for things that include a verbatim search patter or a set of words, and Google for something that’s more fuzzy.


The search engine is not brilliant, but I find it useful enough subject to:

-   Using the Advanced Search feature (not the plain search).

-   Delimiting message age (i.e. to 2, 7, 30 days, 400 days or such), otherwise the default 9999 will bring up and even display essentially old post entries. This parameter is rather crucial in general.

-   Sort by relevance (default) may be useful sometimes, but I tend to favour using "Most recent topic first".

-   Learning well the practical difference between "match all words" and "match any words". Complementary to this, searching for patters using quotes.

-   Occasionally, delimit the boards you want to seach in (i.e. if I want to write on my local board about something, I’ll often delimit the search to my Local Board & sub-boards).

Of course TryNinja is easier to use than relying on the search engines available on the forum, TryNinja can be used as a solution when looking for something you want. A forum search will return more general results, which can be very confusing for newbies. While TryNinja will return more specific results, for this reason I often use TryNinja instead of the search engines available on forums.

The forum's search engine is great if you know quite well what you're looking for. If you're searching the name of a person or a company then it works really well (especially if you want to do something like see the mentions of an exchange over the last week).

If you don't know exactly what you're looking for or can't just search a word, use multiple search engines to get the best result (this should be done with most research anyway if you have a big search and want to make sure your results are accurate or what everyone else will see).

One more additional option you can use is searching with Ninjastic website, that is made by member TryNinja.
I found that this method can be much more effective since you can search by specific member/author, custom dates, title, post content, addresses, etc.

From my understanding, nothing that we have discussed here so far that haven't be discussed before, i can say that the solution of your questions can come into two ways either you search for whst you are about to discuss with the search button and if it's not there, you can proceed to make your post, so i believe that's how some of the experience people do  via checking the content of what they have not discussed or what is about to discuss.

I totally doubt something would be done with the current search function knowing how stagnant the forum development is (both in the current SMF version of Bitcointalk, and the future EpochTalk version). Fortunately just opening a Google tab is almost just as convenient.

Well, something has been done already - TryNinja made ninjastic.space so for me search option is not a problem anymore. It is a 3rd party solution but I am OK with that, like I am OK with using Telegram bot for notifications instead waiting that feature to be implemented on bitcointalk (which probably never will, even on Epochtalk).
