I live in a terraced house my wife and two kids, both are in their own bedrooms but you can hear the neighbor's at times through the upstairs walls when its quiet during the day . Any help would be appreciated

These machines are usually very noisy, although I may be wrong and there are exceptions. The only way to prevent noise from spreading and disturbing others is to soundproof the space where such devices will be placed. I am saying this purely out of some logic, because I have no experience with mining, but if you look at some smaller mining farms (homemade) then you will see how it should look like.

Noise not only affects sleep, but it can be annoying your daily activities, not to mention disturbing the neighbors.
This noise can reach more than 80 decibels, to imagine that noise, the heavy road transport emits a noise estimated at about 90 decibels, and the noise emanating from a mining device such as the Antminer S9 may reach more than 90 decibels.

There are a lot of solutions that can be applied to reduce noise as:

• noise reduction box
• oil-cooled noise reducer
• Immersion type oil cooling

YouTube is full of videos, watch them to find out what is appropriate for you.
If you do not have knowledge about what you are trying to do, it is better to hire an expert person and make calculations before purchasing because it is difficult to modify the purpose after purchasing it.

There is no solution to solve the noise problem except by isolating the mining equipment in a place designated for the purpose away from the population centers.
 I have a friend who used to own mining equipment. He had to declare a craft activity with the authorities in order to be able to open a shop, and thus people would not suspect the noise he makes on the grounds that they are machines that serve the craft activity.
I do not recommend adopting this method, but I will only list what my friend did.  And each person according to his circumstances.

I saw several DIY projects that reduced noise of ASIC miners by creating isolation boxes from different materials.
Some of them managed to reduced noise and other almost completely eliminated noise and used heating from miners for generating heat in winter times or for heating water.
You can search this projects on youtube as acoustic boxes or silencers, and isolating room with miners could also help reduce overall noise.

An ideal solution would be siting it away from residential areas so it doesn't affect those living around, but this is not accessible alternative for most as they need to be able to acquire property in an area away from dense population.

If that's not possible, exploring noise reduction devices is an option. I have not run a mining farm yet, but with research you can discover efficient ways to reduce the noise emitted to the barest minimum.

You're in a bad situation because you're downstairs; even other noises will seem louder than usual if you live downstairs.

It's better if the miner(s) are in the basement where the noise will be less noticeable upstairs, you can offer the space to your neighbor if you have one.
But without proper ventilation, the space will be quite hot.

A long time ago I made a post in the mining section referring to the sound intensity label values ​​of miner machines. I quoted the exact part of that post.  By understanding the specifications of your room, you can choose the right one from the miner. But if in that case you have objection or problem of profit then you can follow the noise reduction method by selecting any of the above mining machines. This results in a 50% deduction of the sound intensity label.

It's true that the noise produces by ASIC can be a nuisance I don't really know because I haven't tried it yet but I read online that the noises coming an ASIC can be reduced by the following; Using Noise Reduction Boxes (which of different varieties like the Labyrinth noise reduction box and Straight-through noise reduction box), Immersion type water cooling, oil cooling, ANC Active Noise Canceller Etcetera etcetera etcetera. you could check them out and see with of them suites you best. Generally mining machine like ASIC one's have huge loud noise with more then 70-80 decibels although I am no expert on this matter but as per some information I have seen through different articles which can be problematic as you are facing at the moment.As you have been provided with some useful resources on how to reduce the noise from machine you can look for such things and try them.

But if you are looking for some noise reduction boxes for Antminers then there are few options available like this one :

But it's expensive so look for some cheap ways if you can like there are some DIY videos which can also work like foam coated set-up to reduce it by some decibels and that would be cheaper for you but it's your wish at the last.

Ok, so is this about reducing the noise from mining, as your own mining gear or your neighbor's gear that is bugging you, or are you talking about general noise? Everyone was focusing on reducing the noise from miners but it's not like the OP has asked how he can do that, nor does he seem to bother to buy such noise and more like the noise coming from his neighbors upstairs.

So before everyone jumps to conclusions and gives the same advice, is this really the question or you're asking to soundproof the entire ceiling from all the noise? I doubt that if OP was mining to date in such a location wouldn't have had problems before or would he be able to sleep at all with something like an S19 screeching 24/7 in that house!

- the more power the machine draws for hashing the more heat it generates
- the more heat you need to blow out the faster and larger the fans and thus the bigger the noise
- sound insulation in a box works but you don't solve the heating issue so you need soundproof ducts and you need more fans for the airflow and that air to be blown somewhere where the noise will also be unleashed.

My advice if you're thinking of mining in a flat, think twice before doing it! Or twelve times, far better!

this is perfectly true, reducing one problem causes another to increase.

I think that the maximum that can be done is to direct the noise to the other side with sound absorbers, where it is less disturbing (to the neighbour I guess)

Trying to reduce the noise of something that was made to make noise is another big headache entirely, I am not sure you are prepared for that, the fastest way to get rid of this noise is to find a quiet location and move, I guess that's not a good reason to move out of your house unless you own a big farm.

You can sell the noisy miner and try finding another that works more quietly, for example jasminer x4, but you never tell us the type of crypto miner you are using, I am guessing it's an ASIC? If that'd correct there is nothing you can do than to change location.

Mate you need to research immersion in mineral mining this method is costly but its will reduce all the noise because of reducing air cooling and you miners will immerse in mineral oil , which increase your miner's life and also you can easily overclock because of controlled temps .

To my extend.of knowledge the foams will not arrest the sound or noise, it just reduce the intensity and its generally used in the place where they have to avoid the echoing for example to capture the actual audio they need to have such thing but sound proofing is completely different and to attain you need to completely cover the entire room with wood over foam and even doors with sound proof tapes and foams.
