Really an unfortunate thing happened not just for Magsayo but for the PH as well. The fight is not even close. The scores are really a gap in favor of Figueroa. Magsayo just tried to survive while he can until the final bell rang.

Brandon Figueroa deserves that win and congratulations to him.

With that loss, seems that Magsayo needs to start from scratch as not eligible for now to fight in a title match.

Some people do not agree with the scorecards, as it seems like the gap is very big. Too bad for Magsayo, as he got deducted twice for score violations, but overall, his performance was not convincing, and Figueroa deserves to win. Magsayo needs to train more and probably change his boxing style, as his career is slowly going down.

I definitely agree that Figueroa deserves that win but i don't think the gap on the scorecards is justifiable. In the unofficial scorecards of the commentators, they scored it 114-112 in favor of Figueroa and if not for the point deductions, it could have been a draw in the unofficial scorecards and that point deduction by the ref is also questionable as he did not warn Magsayo not to hold or whatever that warrant a deduction if he keeps on doing it.

Anyways, that's boxing and it's understandable that the ref and judges will favor Figueroa as he is more popular in the US, also Mark Magsayo was not so impressive in that fight.

Congrats to the Figueroa backers here and if my memory is right, that should be 2.xx for Figueroa to win via decision.

I have it 115-111 in favor of Brandon Figueroa. But that scoring though is questionable. Anyways, time to move on, yes Figueroa deserves to win no doubt about it as we have seen he has more left in the tank specially in the championship rounds wherein he step up to finished the show.

I think Magsayo should take a rest for now, back to back lost in very hard to recover from.

Go back to the Philippines for now and reset everything.

maybe the feeling of weight drain got on magsayo in the later rounds. but in any case, a lot of users from the forum are rooting for magsayo, but don't know if they actually betted on him. magsayo knew he should have done something more on this fight. the scorecards are also way too wide for me. even with point deductions. so this fight should serve magsayo an inspiration for his next fight and do what he thinks would rise his standing in this division.

It probably affected him for all we knows, it's because it's hard to drain your body and squeeze the weight when obviously you can't. But we can't blame his trainer or whoever his nutritionist, it's beyond their control when the fight started.

Magsayo really need to think about his career, he is at the crossroad although he is very young. It hard to say this, but I think he is just a B boxer, not in the level of let's say some of the best Filipino boxers. He has the power, but he don't know how to execute it, and then he tired in the later part of the fight which is very dangerous as he can be knockout anytime. It's good that he survived here, but the result is another loss.

Yeah, he may need to fight 2 high seeders to climb the ladder again. But I want to think that many people were also amazed at how Magsayo performed, it's just that the power was not there because of cutting his weight. He did try ending it quickly as most of the rounds in the first 6 are in favor of him.
But, Figueroa was just smiling after he receives a combo although his chin is really strong. That meant there was no force in it. Some of it shook Figueroa but he absorbed it pretty fast.
I think Magsayo should take a rest for now, back to back lost in very hard to recover from.

Go back to the Philippines for now and reset everything.
How I wish mental recovery won't be an issue for him. He is still young at 27 years old and this is his prime, some tweaking on his performance would make him a champion again.

He need to fix that problem since if he can't adjust to get more stamina to prolong up to 12 rounds on his match its possible that he could lose his next fight. We can't blame this loss to his coaching staff since for sure they do their best to make Magsayo at his very best condition but turns out it didn't show at this fight. Maybe next time Magsayo itself need to find ways to train more to increase his stamina level so that he can sustain his power and maybe can over power his opponent on late rounds.

Brandon Figueroa deserves that win and congratulations to him.

With that loss, seems that Magsayo needs to start from scratch as not eligible for now to fight in a title match.

He missed his opportunities to be back into a title contender. After that lost to Figueroa, his ranking drops, though the chance to fight back and chase for the title is still possible for him.

Let see how things will proceed with his career now. It's Figueroa's term to chase for a title match against
Vargas. Nothing but to wait for another opportunity.

Magsayo needs to relax and train harder to learn from his mistakes. It's time for him to watch the Figueroa and Vargas fight and learn from the boxers who defeated him. While I agree that he is not done, and he is still young, he needs to win the next fight he gets an opportunity for so that the fans will be happy.

He has been given a lot of opportunities already, but with one more loss, I think his promoter might drop him.

He has been given a lot of opportunities already, but with one more loss, I think his promoter might drop him.

He's still young Pacquiao his promoter will not easily give up on Magsayo he is one of the best the Philippines can come out now, Magsayo's camp is protesting the two points deduction and the judges scoring

https://www.boxingnews24.com/2023/03/magsayo-manager-angry-blow-their-stacks-after-loss-to-figueroa/
Quote
“You cannot not, no matter how you add it up, score rounds four to twelve for Brandon Figueroa. You just can’t do it, and also, I want to know why the state of California changed one of our judges.

“On Monday, they changed one of our judges. They changed Rudy Baragon. Why? Because that one guy scored it 117-109? Pathetic. This man [Magsayo] fought his a**off. Everybody saw the fight.

“Even with the point deductions, it could have been 115-113 or 114-114, but 117-109? No,” said an irate Gibbons.

I agree that the match is very close and I even saw it a draw but I just knew that the point deduction will have a huge impact on the scoring, and there's a possibility that the rounds where Magsayo was deducted are the rounds where Figuroa wins it so it could be 10-8 I did not saw the score cards but it could be the case.

That's what I suspected, the weight issue might have taken it's effect on the fight in the later round that Magsayo was really out of gas and seems to be just hanging to survived. The first deduction, yeah I agree, but with the second, not sure though, Brandon too was doing excessive holding, but referee didn't do anything. And by the looks of the scorecard, one judge, score all of the final nine rounds for Figueroa, while the two judges sscored eight of the last nine rounds, doesn't make sense at all. But it is what it is though, I know that almost everyone is disappointed to see Mark Magsayo lose this one, but it should be close in the cards, just saying.  He is still young I know, but this kind of lost will take a lot, and might take sometime for him to recover mentally, and yes he should get a tune up in his next fight and see how it goes, if he can bounce back and rediscover his power again.

True, the effect of extra effort to get in the qualifying weight limit will take its toll in the long run when the fight go the distance.  Anyway, there is no doubt that Magsayo lost in this fight so I think it is time for him to have a little break, rethink his weakness and strength and his training routine.  Work on his stamina since it has been his trademark weakness.

Anyway, time to move on and wait for the next fight of Magsayo, hopefully his camp will take priority of the stamina issue and fix it.

Dude's got a lot of the technicals and fundamentals right during their match but Figueroa is just on another level. Magsayo tried to find for some openings but the constant jabs and zoning of Figueroa really threw Magsayo off and didn't score that much. Magsayo's camp should recondition him that jabs are still important in the bout, and do not rely solely on knockout punches because it's not every time that you'll have the opportunity or opening to do it.

Anyhow, a long break from boxing will surely be a good time for him to study his future possible opponents. A lot of time to learn and grind even harder.

He even performed well against Rey Vargas who is far tougher I think than Figueroa.

I think the stamina is just fine but that extra work to burn the extra weight seems to play a big role. It's exhausting to do that burn, especially if it's about .8 lbs within just a matter of 2 hours and the fight will take place several few hours after that.

It's the first time also for Magsayo to done that thing that's why he's not used to that. The result ended up not fully at his best aside from the fact that Brandon Figueroa is really considered a tough boxer.

Aside from that, the useless lots of punch combination take a lot of energy from him.  And he do it so many times.  He could have resorted to a 1-2 or 1-2-3 combination to preserve his strength.  I hope he had learn a lesson from his mistake and contemplate on what he needs to improve in order to win his next match.

It's the first time also for Magsayo to done that thing that's why he's not used to that. The result ended up not fully at his best aside from the fact that Brandon Figueroa is really considered a tough boxer.

I saw Magsayo hitting Figueroa with powerful punches, it is that Figueroa is really tough and can take Magsayo's punching power.

Magsayo's only chance in that fight is to KO Figueroa but with the latter taking those powerful and remaining standing was not a good sign for him. Stamina really was an issue for Magsayo and it did affect his performance last night plus the fact that he has to burn that extra pound in the weigh-in, really take a toll on him.

In fairness to Figueroa, he fought very well and deserves that shot of the WBC 126lbs title, him and Vargas is a good fight in the making.

For Magsayo, back to scratch for him and I think it will take a longer time for him to fight in a champion fight as he will be campaigning in the super featherweight division which for me is a tough one for him as he needs to bring his power to create a stir in the 130lbs category.

Locking the thread in the next few hours, thanks for the comments in this thread as usual guys.
