Not really that a bad idea if you do really make some stash on top #10 ranking coins in the market as long your finances would able to suit out but if not then going for BItcoin and ETH would be

I'm not too worried about it mate, because bitcoin started from a low value too. What I'm worried about is if the government's conflict with bitcoin occurs and the effect is access denied to crypto either to exchanges or wallets in all countries in the world, that's what I'm afraid of.

I guess as you said we all cant imagine such a situation happening in today modern world as bitcoin itself is not control by any individual so the likely possibility of its crashing is very low, the only situation that could actually lead to such thing happening is when the entire global network shuts down which is very much impossible to happen except a war fought with nuclear weapons occur. People who put all their savings in one basket are surely risking the lifestyle of themselves and their children. Bitcoin used to be a good investment and is supposed to continue this way for a few years, but that doesn't deny risk is always associated with every investment.
The example you mentioned  lost his money to a service that offers exposure to Bitcoin and crypto currencies, not in Bitcoin itself, and these two cases are completely different. At first, I would call your attention to the phrase  which is popular onboard this platform         
" invest what you can afford to loose" this is where many miss out  in making investment decision in bitcoin.  Another thing I noticed off lately is the rate at which complaints have been on the air partaining to bitcoin related investment. Many are still ignorant of the ethics in bitcoin investment while some are adamant to hid to advise not until they see what is about to befall them.
