When you decide which antivirus software to use, it is wise to look at global total user number per each antivirus or global market share here - https://www.safetydetectives.com/blog/antivirus-statistics/. So Bitdefender - 6%, Malwarebytes - 6%, McAfee - 7%, ESET 11%, Avast 11%, Others or Windows Defender - 16%.

This information is almost unimportant to me, because it does not show how good/bad an AV is, but only that a certain percentage of people use it.  Even if these data are correct, it only means that those companies that are at the top have cheaper products or better marketing, not necessarily that they are better than some other AVs that are not even mentioned in the list.

The average user is not qualified to evaluate the functionality or level of protection of a particular AV anyway, and the choice mainly boils down to the fact that the software is not too expensive and has an eye-pleasing interface.

To find how good/bad an AV is - just Google search - antivirus software testing.

Why would I believe in some research that can be very subjective and paid for by the same company that turns out to be the "best choice" in the end? My approach is to personally test what I want to use, and considering that most such software provides a free period, then I decide what is best for me.

You can not personally test the antivirus software, because you do not have let's say 100 various malware/virus samples for testing. There are around 3 major testing companies, which test all most popular antivirus software, and results are similar - so more or less tests are objective. The main problem, why antivirus defence is so important you can find in this forum post - My wallet has been hacked. What to do?
