When I set up my google authenticator for 2FA on KuCoin I got a lengthy code to use for recovery if for example I ever lose my phone.

However, I've just done the same on Kraken and haven't got a similar code.

Does anyone know if I should always have the long backup code for each 2FA or is the code for all of my google authenticator accounts?

I've had the same issue some years ago. I've "fixed" it by using Aegis Authenticator, which does exactly the same as Google Authenticator, plus it has options to backup, import, export your data. Much more convenient than Google's tool (especially if you indeed make backups).

If you want to go by Google, it would be indeed safer to save separately those long strings; those are the (backup) seed for generating those numbers.

I'm not talking from experience here but it looks like they don't have that. Instead, they have the "Master key"[1] which is another password that should help you recover your 2FA[2]. So just make sure to add it to your account, and you should be fine.

You can back up those codes in a better and safer app: AEGIS
https://getaegis.app/

It is safer to use than Google.  You can import and exportar cores and it is open source.

If you're planning on moving to aegis, it should be easy now with the 'transfer accounts' feature. To put it simply, google authenticator would generate a QR code which you can scan using your aegis app. Once done, all accounts should be transferred!

EDIT:

Okay, I looked up for a bit and it appears they do let you view the backup keys by tapping the "view setup key" button, see: https://support.kraken.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001486466

However, I would still recommend moving to aegis as it offers better security and convenience.

As far as I know, the backup code for Google Authenticator is unique for each account that you set up. It's not a universal code that applies to all of your 2FA accounts. Therefore, if you didn't get a backup code for Kraken, it might be because they don't offer this feature or they have a different way of handling it. You should check with Kraken support or their documentation to see how you can recover your 2FA if you lose your phone or the app.

edit:
I just noticed that OmegaStarScream has already referred to the Kraken help documentation. It would be helpful for you to review it thoroughly.

I've got my Google Authenticator back up codes but they're not lengthy and just pure number codes and I've kept it somewhere safer and I can go back anytime if something goes wrong with my phone.
Anything that's related to back up and recovery, you have to keep it and just put some notes whether it's offline storage or on your personal computer. But it's better to be kept somewhere only you can see it because it's a crucial thing to be kept if someone tries to move any of your resources and accidentally finds it.

How do I get the back up codes? I have set up Google authenticator in most of my apps and sites that require passwords to log in but I can't recall been given any back up code in case of phone loss or any other unfortunate circumstances. Is there any way I can go about to retrieve those back up codes now again?

I'm using the Google Authenticator app and the secret codes/backup should come from the website where you registered. If you don't have a copy of the backup/secret codes but you already imported them into Google authenticator what you can only do is to export them from Google authenticator you can find it on "transfer" after you click the 3 dots the only problem is it generates QR code, not the backup code.
If you want the secret code I suggest generate them again or request from the website/apps you registered.

Import your accounts to aegis by following the instructions below. I've personally done this and can vouch.

If you're planning on moving to aegis, it should be easy now with the 'transfer accounts' feature. To put it simply, google authenticator would generate a QR code which you can scan using your aegis app. Once done, all accounts should be transferred!

If you wanna see your backup/secret codes from aegis, press and hold any account > tap the pen symbol in your upper right > advanced > tick the eye symbol in 'secret'. But since aegis has a more efficient way of backing up, you don't really need to do this tedious way of backing up codes, I'd say it's optional.

Thank you for the recommendation but unfortunately after following the instructions you highlighted, I'm still not able to transfer my accounts to aegis. Although aegis has option to scan the image within one mobile but the QR code generated from Google authenticator can not be Screenshot to allow scanning. Perhaps, I will import the account manually one after the other when I am less busy.

Oops, I didn't think of when you're coming from the same device.

If you don't have an extra smartphone/tablet with you. What about your laptop's cam/desktop web cam? perhaps you could take a decent photo using them?

Thanks for the pointer in the right direction, I've set up the Kraken master key as the alternative to 2FA recovery!
