In reality the goalkeeper of Italy saved them from Uruguay winning by at least 3 or even more goals. I thought that Italy will play the better football and put Uruguay under pressure, but it was the other way around all the time. The win was for the right team in this match and I wasn't very impressed by the younger players that Italy has in development right now.

Still, I don't know whether they have managed to stem the decline. Because during the first phase of the Euro Qualifiers, they lost to England by a margin of 1-2. Right now, I can only think about three European teams who are thriving - France, England and Croatia. All the other teams within the UEFA confederation are declining right now. A decade or so back, Uruguay surprised everyone with their strong performances in FIFA World Cup. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, they managed to reach the semi-finals thanks to strong performances from Diego Forlán, Fernando Muslera, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez. But after the retirement of their star players, they have once again fallen out of limelight. Unlike the case with Brazil or Argentina, Uruguay doesn't have a very large player pool. The total population is only 3 million or so (1/60th of that of Brazil).
