It took them 10 years, jeez.

I won't be surprised if the fed got the info from a close friend of his, because he took them more than 10 years so they must have gotten their info from someone who knew what the man did. But in the end, Evil deeds must yield evil results, since his deed was evil it's now time for him to reap the repercussion.

Most times keeping things where others would never have taught you would keep it or the most obvious place where others would thing it's stupid becomes the safest place because of others underestimating it and not bothering to even check it.

Nah, he accidentally outed himself to the Feds when he reported a robbery against him for an unusually high sum of cash (6 figures in a briefcase).

That was a pretty dumb decision for him to make, considering that he had millions of dollars worth of crypto left over from the heist anyway.

If it wasn't for Bitcointalk, I would've missed this news, to be honest. I suppose the tin was chosen as something you would expect to be used to store scraps for food or small miscellaneous items, but not a digital currency in enormous amounts. But since the authorities were already onto the guy, they found what they were looking for. I wonder how they tracked the guy down after all those years, and I hope the money will go into the state budget or to a charity, considering that you can't really give it back to its owners. If, as NotATether says, he decided to report a robbery, it seems he made a stupid mistake. I mean, he had tons of other money, the risk was too high.

The only new news is that the man was sentenced to even 1 year in prison, and that's apparently what you get when you steal 50 000 BTC. Everything else is recycling old news, but some still haven't learned the true function of the search engine...

Yeah, don't be that guy, don't get caught and try to be smart when you plan to do your crime, and also remember to believe in luck because you're going to need it especially if you lack a bit on the smarts.

I hadn't heard anything about this story--but then again, my grasp of crypto news has always been a little weak, so thanks for posting this, tread93.

At the time he kept it there that must have been his best choice and also it did save him from getting caught for ten years so I'd say the Cheetos tin did his job well.
Man, I didn't even know Cheetos came in a can!  I've been gobbling them down out of those stupid bags that never seem to open right.  But you're right, and in the end since he buried his illicit bitcoin stash underground it really doesn't matter what kind of canister he put them in (though something non-magnetic might have been a better choice, like a sealed Cheetos bag).

The feds may or may not have all things crypto under the microscope, but this Cheetos-eating bitcoin-stealer did, in fact, steal a hell of a lot of money.  If he'd stolen cash and buried it, I would hope the same action would have been taken.  Going after thieves is something law enforcement should do, as long as there's good reason for them to believe something was stolen and they don't abuse their powers of surveillance and everything else.

By the way:  The Flamin' Hot variety of Cheetos suck ass.  If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and don't try them.

Edit:  And boy, if ever there was a need for someone to use a mixer, this would be the case--and yet our junk food boy didn't.  Amazing, right?

Hey man! happy to spread the random bitcoin related news lmao. Good one Chem lol that comment on how bad the flaming hot cheetos are, I honestly would have to agree. At least get some Takis !! but even those aren't even that great IMO. This guy had it coming to him, he had terrible avoidance measures for not getting caught by the FEDs too lol. Surely if you're going to try and pull off a stunt like this you would put a little more thought into it, but honestly if you're not doing anything wrong then theres no reason to be running from the FEDs! So do the right thing folks Cheesy  Crypto mixer might have definitely helped him tho ngl lol

the dude was so greedy he couldn't let go of money that was basically nothing for him considering how much bitcoin he had stolen. the dude even used his stolen Bitcoin on an exchange site to profit from it. in the end, he is lucky that he only got sentenced to 1 year in prison.
