I just received a phone call from someone in Scotland claiming to be with Bitcoin.org.  What is Bitcoin.org and what is its purpose?
The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

I just received a phone call from someone in Scotland claiming to be with Bitcoin.org.  What is Bitcoin.org and what is its purpose?

Bitcoin.org is one of the oldest sites, which made buying Bitcoin easier for buyers back then.
The person who called will definitely want to convince you into some scam stuff, either by needing your login to the site or by wanting to promise you some Bitcoin from bitcoin.org, for which they will in turn want you to pay some kind of fee before you can claim their promised bonus or reward.

The person who called me claims that they can send me money that I had invested in an online trading platform that was found to be fraudulent and was subsequently shutdown.  This person claims that my funds will be sent without me making a payment to them until after I have received my funds.

If they claim that you can receive your funds without you making another payment then maybe try to chat a little longer with him.
but if they ask you to make a payment then just block their number so they can't call you again to do it.

I just received a phone call from someone in Scotland claiming to be with Bitcoin.org.  What is Bitcoin.org and what is its purpose?

This situation is like somebody calling you and saying " I am Facebook or Twitter". No single person is bitcoin.org. Bitcoin.org is a community of Bitcoin believers that discusses about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. So no single person is Bitcoin.org. From his comments it is clear that he is lying so be careful.

The person who called me claims that they can send me money that I had invested in an online trading platform that was found to be fraudulent and was subsequently shutdown.  This person claims that my funds will be sent without me making a payment to them until after I have received my funds.

This clearly shows that the person intends to defraud you. These fraudsters always make enticing promises that will never be fulfilled. Please don't continue with the conversation because he might be able to convince you to believe he is genuine. He is simply a scammer, so beware.

Bitcointalk.org is not a person, but rather a website where all bitcoin talks take place, with the goal of learning everything there is to know about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Don't believe the individual who contacted you and claimed to be from bitcointalk.org; we all know it's a website for bitcoin discussion. That person who phoned you is a fraudster, believe me; otherwise, how did he know you invested in bitcoin and that your money would be refunded without you making payment? I believe they know what they're doing, and they need your public key to accomplish their goals.

Possibly scam and attempt phishing to give out sensitive information to strangers over the phone, and don't click any link sent to your phone, i don't know what websitehase that domain name and the only Bitcoin.org know is this forum and
It has a (talk) added to the Bitcoin to specify that this is a discussion forum.
I can assure you that the call is a scam attempt and you should disregard the caller by all means possible you can block that user outrightly.

It is almost certain that it's a scammer that has got your details from websites or forms that you've signed up with in the past. Didn't you ask anything where did he got your contact details? Well, even so, I doubt it that it will be said.
Well, someone can just call you out of nowhere can claim that they're from the FBI and tax bureau trying to fish you some money.

The person who called me claims that they can send me money that I had invested in an online trading platform that was found to be fraudulent and was subsequently shutdown.  This person claims that my funds will be sent without me making a payment to them until after I have received my funds.

Typical scam. Bitcoin.org would never do something like this. They're also not a service and don't ask for people's phone numbers.

But let me guess? you have never placed a single cent to the trading platform they're talking about?

If you're still confused, you can always cross check with bitcoin.org if the claim is true because if it is, you would've seen it on the front page. Upon checking, there's nothing ofc.

Bitcoin.org give you full explanation to what bitcoin is about, even to purchase bitcoin also to download the whitepaper of bitcoin.
.org means organization, and how will someone called you and said of being the organization does that make sense to you?
You better block such person or user otherwise you could get scammed.

OP, almost all of your posts here are about attempts to scam you.

My suspicion is that you are hunting for free coins or any kind of Bitcoin giveaway. Because of this, and since many, if not all, of these Bitcoin giveaways are scam, you fell victim to a number of them. I also suspect that you readily give away personal details to these scammers with the hope that you will receive free coins.

I suggest that you stop hunting for free coins. Stop signing up for giveaways. Stop chasing all kinds of promos; they're mostly fake, baits, fraudulent schemes. You need to stop this madness.

I hope I'm wrong!

I just received a phone call from someone in Scotland claiming to be with Bitcoin.org.
Contacting first and claiming to be someone, representative of any organization, entity, company is like scam. Later, if the offer is related to money and worse you have to go first by sending your money, your bitcoins, it is surely a scam attack.

Quote
What is Bitcoin.org and what is its purpose?
Bitcoin.org is an organization [dot] org. It's not a business company.

Use what is correct but use Who is is not good.

Domain name update
Satoshi created both bitcoin.org and this forum, which was originally at bitcoin.org/smf. Later, the forum got its own domain name, but due to this history, bitcoin.org and bitcointalk.org have traditionally been linked, and for quite some time Cøbra and I have together managed the domain names. However, Cøbra has never had much involvement in bitcointalk.org's operation, and I haven't involved myself in bitcoin.org for a couple of years, so the linkage between the two no longer really made made any sense. Therefore, we decided to separate the domains: I no longer have any access to the bitcoin.org domain name, and Cøbra no longer has any access to the bitcointalk.org domain name. The two sites should be viewed as totally separate, which in practice they have been for years.

There will be no changes whatsoever on bitcointalk.org due to this, and I'd assume that the same will be true of bitcoin.org. The bitcoin.org open-source project has been advancing steadily, and I hope and expect that it will continue to do so thanks to the efforts of its contributors.

Thanks to Cøbra for handling much of bitcointalk.org's domain-name-related work in the past.
Since April 17, 2020, 07:13:47 PM, the Bitcointalk.org forum is no longer related to both Cøbra and bitcoin.org.

Bitcoin.org does not have enough credit to contact people at random and give them money.
anyone who asks for your data or will give you money for free or in exchange for effort without a specific job is a scam.

Bitcointalk.org is not a person, but rather a website where all bitcoin talks take place, with the goal of learning everything there is to know about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Don't believe the individual who contacted you and claimed to be from bitcointalk.org;
dude, OP asking about Bitcoin.org, not bitcointalk.org

The person who called me claims that they can send me money that I had invested in an online trading platform that was found to be fraudulent and was subsequently shutdown.  This person claims that my funds will be sent without me making a payment to them until after I have received my funds.

Did you invest in any online trading platform if you did not then just ignore them they are fishing for a potential victims, but if you did then there's a possible leak of data.
Bitcoin.org is not a regulatory website, it's an information website, there's nothing on their website that says they have control over any trading platform, obviously, they have an attempt to scam you, don't be greedy to fall to their scheme, you're wiser than this.

Just to make it clear, I am not looking for free Bitcoin.  I lost a significant amount to a fraudulent online trading platform which has now been shutdown.  I have accepted my loss and am not soliciting these people who randomly contact me.  I would never pay anything upfront to these individuals.  if someone claims to have access to any of my investment funds and wants to transfer them to me without an upfront payment then I would do my due diligence first.  My first inclination when someone contacts me is that it is a scam.  If I am unsure then I seek the advice of the forum members to educate me.  In this instance I knew nothing about Bitcoin.org but you guys have educated me and I now know how what red flags to look for.

bitcoin.org is a legitimate site with the aim of providing knowledge about Bitcoin for those of us who visit.
If someone calls and claims to work at bitcoin.org, then it is important that you do not directly believe anything that he wants.
It could just be a mode to deceive you.
