Is Tornado cash still up and usable?

I have come across a tornado cash looking site, but I am not sure if it's real or a phishing site?

We know the original site was blacklisted (https://tornado.cash)

 I am seeing another alternative on the Wikipedia page, but they don't look similar to the one above (https://beacon.cash)

AFAIK, the dev is already in the jail and the last update they made was August last year with an existing problem with their code. I think tornado cash is long gone and this new website is just made by someone trying to use the brand with their own gain.

I think this new tornado cash hype is due to the news that the dev is considered to be set free.

There are news as well that only that american citizens cannot use the mixer but their site is not up.

That site posted was on their official twitter, but i cannot see any tweet related from them to that new site.

While on the other hand, one of the co-dev who create tornado cash is making a new one^[1].

The Tornado Cash smart contract is immutable and hence is still live on the Ethereum blockchain. I'm not sure about that IPFS site, but you can still use Tornado Cash today as long as you know how to manually interact with the smart contract.

Take note that Ethereum and "DeFi" is pretty much useless if a takedown of its front-end website literally kills the platform. The authorities can only take down the domain and the front-end; but the back-end will always be live.

I reckon you do not understand how this works. The smart contracts are immutable and cannot be censored, only the frontend is censored. Anyone can still connect and mix their coins with the smart contract directly.

Why the site interface is similar to the mixing service from @whierwindmoney, the similarity is almost close to matching.
It seems that the site is real, but I advise you to stay away from it. The developer has been arrested and service is under Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and there are many accusations of this service for that, especially for account based cryptos.

I didn’t said that smart contract is fake. What I’m telling in my post was the original tornado.cash brand is long gone since the dev is already on the jail. The project is being taken care of by someone and this was being watched by government.

I don’t know if using the current service is worth the risk knowing how this project was already under the watch of the government.

Haha it is the same things I just look and the color is the same too whirlwind background logo is a tornado from a side look while the tornado cash is from the above and the statistic too only whirlwind has a bigger box. Neither this whirlwind got inspiration from tornado cash nor the maker from the tornado cash family But both are great 

The only difference is that tornado is (air-based phenomenon) while whirlwind is (earth-based phenomenon)^[1].
Also the extension  tornado.cash while whirlwind.money

Using the frontend will certainly be a risk, however, I am not very sure if using Tornado Cash by connecting directly to the smart contracts is safe or not after the sanctions by the American government. There were some news articles that reported some hackers continue to use it. It might be safe but will you take the risk? Clearly we would not hehehe.

But it's still a conspiracy and even it's already proven they have a connection, there's nothing to worry. AFAIK Blender.io and Tornado.cash had never scammed any user from their mixing service.

Maybe in the future if whirlwind.money get shutdown by SEC, they will start with another names like hurricane.fiat, typhoon.capital, cyclone.funds

Is their mixing process reliable to begin with? I'm not familiar with how they work, not to mention they mention some RPC blocking can hinder their service if they do still run it right now. At the end of the day though, I would be surprised if the government just stay still and do nothing to decrypt/analyze the transactions made through them. Would be a weird move since they can use that as a basis to sue others. CMIIW.

In any case, many people used it before the sanction. One of them is Sifu who is a famous scammer. His tokens were never traced after it went through the mixer. Also, Tornado is still very much alive in Binance smartchain.

Understandable. It would be interesting if somebody test the service and make a detailed report just like how there is a paper on Bitcoin mixer. But I guess there is just not enough demand for that since altcoin mixers barely exist nowadays. CMIIW.

I see. I guess that's why they decide to go with IPFS to prevent domain takedown or something similar (CMIIW). At the end of the day, you can't really make a decent profit if your service is unused by people due to a lack of UI.

@joniboini. The frontend might need to use IPFS, however, anyone can use Tornado Cash by interacting manually through the smart contracts in etherscan.io. I reckon not much people might have recognized how incredibly powerful this software is. The American government scantioned it, the first time a government sanctioned software hehe. But what can they do to take it down? They cannot do anything except monitor, I reckon.

@big_daddy. Everyone should learn how to interact with the smart contract directly and should not depend on frontends that will certainly be collecting your ip address, your browser type, version, your operating system and other infromation about your computer.

In any case, this address has been transferring coins to Tornado Cash for mixing.

According to social media, the address is owned by the hacker who stole funds from Uranium Finance.
