Hello all, I am trying to track a bitcoin purchase I made in 2009, I no longer have the pc I used, I wrote the details on some paper and stored it but we've moved house a few times and it might have gone missing,  I have looked on every hard drive, flash drive, cd, dvd etc but to no avail so far.
I bought it off a forum post but I can't remember which forum. Did anyone sell bitcoin in 2009 and if so which forums did you use, I am trying to retrace my steps in the hope it jogs my memory,  I've only been looking for the last 2 years 🤣 so I don't mind looking for another 2 years.
Cheers
Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Are you talking about this old forum
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5.0
I do not know if there is someone selling Bitcoin on that time since you can easily earn those Bitcoin by running a full node and mine it with your PC.

I don't think you can get that your lost coins again because the memory lost and the lost of all the trackable means is too high. Even you find out the site the person sold his coins at that time. The site the person used might not the same with yours. Now if you can remember any of the old sites that were selling and buying bitcoin then you can make some traces from that angle. But asking people in the forum to tell your if they have sell bitcoin in that year is looked like childish. You can even google them to know if there was any existing exchange platform in bitcoin since 2009. Or you can restructure the clause to suit your taste. Most of the platforms that were selling and buying bitcoin in those days of 2009 to 2011 are no more. They have been replace with smart exchange. And since there is no trance, remembrance and knowledge about the whole stuff will be very hard to recovered. And you are the only person who can find it out if it is possible. But I don't think it will be possible. You can cognitively remember the forums you used at that time and if not then forget about the coins.

I saw in year of 2009 bitcoin price was 0.0001$ gradually Bitcoin come in this position. It was bit challenge to survive. But Bitcoin overcome all situation. Now bitcoin well established. For bitcoin now created thousands of coin and token. Who bought bitcoin in 2009 or near thats years and hold that bitcoin he now well established. And he changed his life i think. Then only some person buy bitcoin and they are huge profited. I think even now who are buying bitcoin and holding they will huge profited there has no doubt.

Sorry but if you know you bought them from a forum user somehow you should have an account that is not this current forum member.  Try to recover the account and you will find your old posts.

Hello all, I am trying to track a bitcoin purchase I made in 2009, <...>

Hahaha! You have a great sense of humor!

I'm not sure what your investment portfolio looked like in 2009, but it's safe to say that Bitcoin wasn't a part of it at the time.

Am sorry if you bought the bitcoin into a cold storage that gives you access to the private keys, then you have to find those keys to unlock your bitcoin on the blockchain irrespective of the device used as lobg as you have the private keys, but if you cant get it then you may have to get it, also if the bitcoin was bought and stored on a centralized exchange wallet, then try to remember the password abd email address used for the hot wallet to have access to the bitcoin provided that the exchange is not gone down already by now.

I'm not asking if someone on here sold me the coins,  I'm just trying to retrace my steps, there wasn't any exchanges in 2009 they was sold peer to peer, so I'm not being childish just trying to jog my memory

So you just want to find out what transactions you've been doing for a long time? I'm not sure there were quite several forums you were in at that time, but you saw some interactions you had in the past with other members. maybe it will take a longer time.
I only know this forum, and it so happened that when I found out about Bitcoin, there were already several exchanges that could help me to own Bitcoin.
good luck getting what you're looking for. it's a very long transaction. unfortunately, it will take longer for you to find it.

Sorry, but it seems lost forever. 2009 was already long enough especially since you transferred to different houses. It is really true that we can only give importance to any stuffs when it becomes valuable. It's like a lost opportunity. I remember there were faucets before that are now worth some dollars per claim. If I knew bitcoin would be as valuable as today, I would've put all my money into it.

What we can do now is to take advantage of its price while it is still low compared to its ATH. Still very very far from the 2009 price but at least profit is profit and more realistic.

Since 2009?
I heard that the price of bitcoin pumped in 2013, it also pumped in 2017/2018, and finally 2020/2021, how come it is just 2 years ago that you started looking for bitcoin you bought way back 2009??, I kind of having a hard time believing you, did you forget you bought bitcoin in 2009, and only got to remember 2 years ago? And forgetting where you bought the bitcoin from is also unbelievable..

Anyways, doesn't matter what I believe or not believe, the fact is, if you already lost your keys, you've lost your bitcoins, if you left it on a centralized system or a custodial wallet after purchase, rest assured you  made somebody somewhere super rich and i wish it was me 😔.

It looks like he's one among the early investor on bitcoin. The white paper got published on 2008 and came to usage during the year 2009. Op have bought it on the same year, almost 14 years passed and now he had remembered the buying. Anyhow its ones own ability to search and find. As most people have suggested, lost the key and it's lost forever. It is his sole right to go find it same as what an IT guy have been doing with some agreement with the city council to search the trash dump for three years spending $11m.

The quest to find $181 million in bitcoin buried in a dump

Are you talking about this old forum
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5.0
I do not know if there is someone selling Bitcoin on that time since you can easily earn those Bitcoin by running a full node and mine it with your PC.

wow legendary threads with legendary people in this forum, are they all still active, in this forum,

OP: years 2009 -2023 a long time ago it's hard to remember if you don't have an accurate memory in your brain, especially since you  remembered it 2 years ago, my advice is to forget your memories because it's hard to remember

Better to just go back to your sleep, because you are no longer of this age, how come you have gone off since 2009 and just I'm coming alive now after such a long time?

This is most impossible thing to do right now because the time-space has really been too long and you won't even have a record of where the coins are stored because even though you get the acclaimed seller from that forum, you still do not have any guarantee of getting those coins back since you bought and transferred those coins to your personal wallet at that time.

Sorry but if you know you bought them from a forum user somehow you should have an account that is not this current forum member.  Try to recover the account and you will find your old posts.

OP said, he bought bitcoin from a forum post but was not sure which forum, he didn't say bitcointalk forum.  from what he said, I don't see any small chance of getting his bitcoins back.  even if he finds the person who sold it to him, what will he do next? unable to recall the entire seed phrase after all these years, the human brain cannot do this.

That's a very long time ago, OP. Supposing your story is true and you spent 50 quid for some Bitcoin, you must have tens of thousands of coins. That should be worth hundreds of millions of dollars today. Indeed, that's worth all the efforts to try recover them. No stone should be left unturned.

Anyway, you must have used an email when you signed up to that forum? Try to recover that also. You might find some old confirmation messages from that forum.

But I still wonder how you could possibly retrieve those coins even if you recovered everything save for your keys.

I'm not asking if someone on here sold me the coins,  I'm just trying to retrace my steps, there wasn't any exchanges in 2009 they was sold peer to peer, so I'm not being childish just trying to jog my memory
OP, this story is not clear.

As you mentioned, Bitcoin was relatively new back in 2009, though I'm not sure if that was early or late that year. Because peer-to-peer transactions require people to be familiar with Bitcoin wallets in order to send Bitcoin to one another, which wallet did you use to receive your Bitcoin? Because, as stated in the original content, you are looking for a location to save your Bitcoin, which I believe you mean your wallet private key, so that you can access your Bitcoin.
