Hello, I have a Trezor of the first version.

I want to buy some bitcoins but I see that this company has newer versions of cold wallets.

Is it safe to store bitcoins in Trezor 1 model?

Yes, it is safe. You can even still buy Trezor model one on Trezor official site. But make sure that you are updating the firmware and everything you are using with it, like Trezor Suite or Electrum.

Regarding the security of the Model One compared to the Model T, I don't think there is any significant difference - and both models have a vulnerability that allows the device to be hacked if someone comes into its physical possession. Of course there is a way for users to protect themselves by setting up passphrase, which should again be composed of random characters, and if I remember correctly, someone mentioned even 30+ characters for absolute security.

I think you can be pretty safe if you buy BTC and store them in that HW, although there are always some better solutions.

It is included in the link that Lucius included up there, but it is still worth mentioning that if you lose your passphrase, it is like you lose your seed phrase too, because the passphrase is needed just like the seed phrase, to recover your coins if the wallet is lost.

It is also worth knowing that you should backup your seed phrase and passphrase differently in different locations.

Wasn't aware of how the passphrase thing works on  Trezor devices : basically is like adding another word to the seed and therefore creating a new wallet?

Anyway considering recent ledger mess up, even if it's a bit offtopic, would you be so kind to share what you consider being better solutions?

Exactly. With the passphrase, new keys and addresses are generated

For bitcoin, wallets on airgapped devicen is better. If not spending the coin for a long time, you can use a paper wallet too. But wallet on airgapped devices, you can have a watch-only wallet too which is optional but can make broadcasting transaction easy.

That's right, and that means that the seed in itself is worthless without a passphrase, and even though it may cause confusion for some, when it comes to Trezor, I would recommend everyone to familiarize themselves with that option and use it.

The only storage that can be considered safe if done correctly is airgapped cold storage, and anyone with an old laptop/PC can do it.
