As long as the person is not addicted to that habit, he can easily change it without much of difficulty.  It is the addiction that makes things very difficult.  Like in gambling, if one falls to gambling addiction, it would be very hard for him to pull himself back to sanity where he is in control of his activities.  I do not blame the social media here because they are there to advertise but you are the one who is in contorl wheter you let yourself get influenced or shut these social media advertisements down and ignore them totally.

I agree with you on the part where you stated the obvious how hard it could be for someone who is already addicted to quit the habit, you rightly said it will be harder if the habit is already earning something in terms of gambling and being on the winning stride,  but if there is a will there will definitely be a way,  so for that ongoing what have already been part of you could be hard but not impossible but best easy way is to give it a long term approach and not by quitting at once.

E.g by placing a limit and reducing the number of time and energy you put in at the initial stage and this could mean a lot because someone may think that not quitting 100% may not yield any positive result for the addict but believe me it will eventually and on the long run.

I have done something like this when I am addicted to smoking reduce the habit after a few months, I will get used to reducing it finally stopped completely and it was the same as what my friend was done, he could stop gambling that way, it was true that the addict would find it difficult to quickly recovered and will not be able to instantly stop just like that, it takes time to change habits slowly after being accustomed it will be easy to stop gambling.
