There is like one in ten million chance that you will win the jackpot (a wild guess, it will vary from game to game). So don't purchase lottery tickets with the expectation that you are going to win the jackpot. If you are participating in the lottery game just for fun, then it is OK. I also purchase tickets once in a while to test my luck and I never get disappointed if I don't win anything. That is how it works. You can play lottery a few times a year. I don't know about others. But for me lottery is a scam. Look at Powerball or Mega Millions. Only a fraction of the ticket sales are used to fund rewards. And even then, the winners need to pay income tax (both federal and state) on the amount they receive. A large fraction of the revenues end up with the government in the form of various direct and indirect taxes. I would rather prefer casino games. Casinos maybe having 1% or 2% house advantage, but the remainder is being paid as rewards. Obviously you need to pay tax on whatever amount you win, but net receipts are still greater when compared to lottery games.
