Seems to me that the essence of what we really are is really the pattern of everything in our life. This includes the 'bio-electrical' form that we have in combined brain and nerves. It might include something beyond this - like our spirit - that science hasn't been able to figure out yet... but that is included in the pattern that makes us up.
