Astronaut just eat a pill containing multi-vitamins, and they also just drink the recycled water from wastes.

They do not have the luxury of sending a lot of freshly prepared foods from the earth to the moon everyday.

How much food do you think we need to live comfortably?

10 pounds a day of meats and cheese?

How much food do you think we need to live comfortably?

10 pounds a day of meats and cheese?

I don't think it's so much about the quantity of food, but rather about the type of food we eat. Both meat and cheese are animal products that take quite some time to produce. You need to feed the chicken, pig or cow before you can take the eggs, milk or slaughter them. That is why environmental friendly diets limit the consumption of meat to 1-2 per week. It would be much easier if people eat more plant based diets and less animal products. Having some cereals in the morning, rice with vegetables for lunch and only bread or a salad for dinner would make it easier for the world to produce enough food for everybody. However, we can't force people what to eat, it's not realistic and shouldn't be the focus of politics. Instead it would help to teach people how much work and energy is needed to make certain type of food. The world should have no problem to produce enough food for everybody, it just might not be steaks and burgers for everybody.

Do you even know how much those pills cost? Is it available in the market for sale?
People make money to eat and survive. If you don't make money, you won't be able to buy food. Food is essential for the human body to keep it powered. Or you may say vitamins that are available in foods. If we can eat vitamins and we can live without eating foods, then be it.

This is not like that. Those medicines cost huge, and you cannot afford them every day. That's why you eat food to keep yourself alive. Sometimes we eat food for good taste and treat ourselves. But, you cannot enjoy it with medicines.

I don't think it's so much about the quantity of food, but rather about the type of food we eat.
There is up to millions of foods to choose from in this world, I think it would be insane to go through one by one. Just look at the typical Chinese cruisine, and it is jaw droppingly full of variations.

Again, they are too complex indeed, there isn't one size fit all answer to the issues. Some food has very high CO2 footprint, some has very low CO2 footprint, it is absurd to completely go for the best one out of two options.

It cost ten grand to make just enough for a person!! Joke aside, the pill is typically a compressed form of diet found on the food table, they are highly dehydrated to reduce the total weight massively, however you won't find anything such as gold or diamond in the pill itself which is super rare and high priced commodity, they are typically  proteins, fats, some soluble fibers, mostly starch, and a bit tad of multi-vitamins. It can be very cheap to manufacture in a big volume, but expensive in very small volume.

yup, it is not only unaffordable, a longterm side effect would be very ugly too, many astronaut after return to the earth have all sort of healthy issues due to exposing to cosmic radiations.

That is not true. Yes, they take some vitamins and minerals as a supplement in pill form, but that is not all they eat. Astronauts on the International Space Station, for example, eat three meals a day, and it is pretty much the same food they would have on Earth, just tweaked a bit for practicality and safety reasons. (You know, it is not easy slurping chicken soup with a spoon in a zero-gravity environment.)

It largely depends on what & how much your body needs:
*Energy/carbohydrates (fuel) for work,
*Protein(building material),
* others: minerals, vitamins, oil etc

A hardworking adult needs lots of foods especially those rich in natural energy and couple of protein, vitamins, minerals, oil rich foods.




People who do little to no work need little food. If they eat more than they need the foods will be passed out from the rear end or/and stored in the body as fat.



* Note that Work equals (=) Solving problems. The more problems you solve the more food you need. And working isn't necessarily physical activities even though it is very important. Maybe excersing should compensate for lack of that. And exercising is also working, though abit selfish because it solves problem for self

They have no option in space so yeah they must eat what is available but the problem is that in our houses we have lot of available food and its hard to resist.

In my part  as now I am diabetic ? I only find foods twice a day  with in 16 hours apart .

consuming small amount of carbo , large amount of veggies and some protein from fish meat . .

astronauts dont eat pills

they have 2 litres of water and 2kg of food (2litre=2kg so 4kg combined of water and food total a day)
technically its dehydrated food of 500g which they put 1.5lire into pouch to re hydrate

its much the same as things on earth
1cup dehydrated potato flake+3 cups water = instant mashed potato
1 cup dried rice+3 cup water= cooked soft rice
1cup lentils+3cups water=lentil soup

calories are a mathematicians unit of a calculation of something else

your body needs a whole range of real nutrients.
sugars&fats, vitamins, proteins, minerals

of those 4 categories there are different individual nutrients
for instance
sugars&fats is the family of: dextrose, glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose
and they all have different reaction, effect and need of the body

for instance
lactose: helps aid the body absorption of other minerals
dextrose: helps aid the body absorption of water

of those family of sugars and fats. although mathematicians count them equally as "calories"/energy.. they have a different glycaemic index of how much energy they release per hour but calories does not count them this way

having a soda with Y teaspoons of sugar. vs solid food of same Y teaspons of sugar suggest the same calories.. but in fluid form(soda) your bodies energy spikes more

OP's post imagining daily food delivery to the moon/space station is a fantasy due to the cost of delivery..
however when they start "space mining" and colonising the moon. they will be doing regular deliveries of equipment using re-usable rockets and those payloads wil have food supplies.. and seeds.. where eventually after time the moon will be growing their own produce

We only need what our body needs, not too much ,for too much of every thing is bad . Of our various ages  we eat our balance diet ,starting from a toddler to the aged .
 We have to consider our health issues,expiring date ,type  if it is for you or not, when eating any food ,the food must be quality enough to meet our body nutrients  In other to avoid malnutrition .we eat to live not live to eat ,too much of every thing is bad

I don't think that we need a lot of food everyday. Look at the Japanese people, they only eat what they body needs and they don't get full every meal.

i suggest that we pick the food we consume very carefully and control how much of it will be good even some fruits, albeit healthy, still have so much sugar that if we eat a lot of it it might be dangerous

the amount of food we consume will also depend on how much we need or we’re going to burn off if you are an athlete your diet might differ from other people

I think that we should stay healthy and consume just as much as our body needs to function
i guess it's just a matter of being picky and whatnot

I think the amount of food we consume, is determined by our stomach. Humans have different modes of eating and this modes of eating ranges from the amount we have been consuming right from childhood, while some are based on the body system which Natural comsumes alot of food. While some are medical issues which need to be attended to. But In all, non should be compared to astronots who stays in space where there is no good food or enough food like Earth, which has somany things.

Yeah, sugar is addictive and that's why when we're kids we like it and even as adults, it's still addicting. I am trying to pick and monitor my intakes especially with drinks because they're tasty, the sugary drinks aka sodas.

I am not an athlete and usually sits a long time but I do some of the workouts that I need when I go out and make sure that I sweat a lot. That's why even if I eat sometimes too much, I can still manage.

in Our country , you are lucky if you can manage to eat at least 1 pound of meat a day because we are a carbohydrates country .
meaning we only have small portion of meat and plenty of rice , while Cheese? we are lucky to have cheese for a week  time Grin..

but now that I am Diabetic ? i stopped eating rice and instead goes to veggies and meat now (of course added expenses )

I'm not really into food , I only eat twice a day and I hate sweet foods (aside from fruits of course)
so basically i only consume so little from what OP is asking maybe 2 pounds of meat and a little pasta and side dish?
of course with Vegetables or greens to be specific ot those leafy vegetables.
I think the amount of food we consume, is determined by our stomach. Humans have different modes of eating and this modes of eating ranges from the amount we have been consuming right from childhood, while some are based on the body system which Natural comsumes alot of food. While some are medical issues which need to be attended to. But In all, non should be compared to astronots who stays in space where there is no good food or enough food like Earth, which has somany things.
and also determined by our budget? because even if we wanted to eat more but we are
not capable to buy more then we may end dieting  Grin
