Not really a waste of time to take care of any animal, it is a problem of why are you taking care of them. I think it is all about the conditioning of the fighting rooster.  It isn't just a belief but a scientific-based program where the fowl raiser gives the cock all the needed nutrients to be able to be in full condition when engaged in cockfighting.  It is like conditioning and training just like in any combat sports.  Others even have the conditioning programs so that the rooster have the advantage in terms of being ready when the time it will be set to cock fighting.
