Even though I've just heard of tournaments like this, I'm quite pessimistic that it will have a big impact on stopping them from gambling addiction, because what gambling addicts actually aim for is real winning money (they've lost a lot so they hope to be able to get their money back missing). I have different point of view to be honest, I think that such free tournament will not help addicted gamblers to stop their gambling activity. Not really sure that the social tournament you are referring to can prevent or limit cases of gambling addiction and will disappear, but maybe it could have a small effect as a preventive measure.
