Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Adriano Espaillat spoke Friday morning to push for a pathway for migrants to more easily start working as one way to ease the social burden of the city’s influx of migrants.

They were met with a loud crowd and were forced to shout.

“They are prevented from getting jobs, they are prevented from employment and that is part of the strain on our public systems,” Ocasio-Cortez said over protestors. “So the faster that folks can access the work that they are asking for, legally, the better we can solve this problem.”

why would you let people come into the country and not even let them work? it doesn't make sense. hopefully they are giving them some type of universal basic income while they sit and wait to work. that's all i can say!  Shocked

there's too much red tape if someone is here in this country they shouldn't have to prove anything to anyone to be allowed to work. anyone agree?

oh, i forgot the link to the story: https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/4206566-house-democrats-confronted-by-protestors-over-migrant-crisis-in-nyc/

The NYC constituency being forced to bear the burden of their voting habits, a tragedy.

If there's an influx of cheap labor, it drives down wages of everyone else. The neoliberal perspective is that borders shouldn't exist and they would argue that it increases economic growth and raises productivity. But that assumes you're dealing with a skilled labor force, which these people are not.

what do you mean? I don't necessarily think people in NYC voted for the migrant crisis there they didn't think that could happen so give them a break.

well, companies outsourced jobs overseas many years ago and look what happened. did that drive down peoples' wages here in the usa? probably not!

everyone is unskilled when they first start out. that's why training and education exist. how long does it take to become a nurse? maybe 2 years? and then you're making $250,000 or more maybe way more. some of these people could do that just as easily as they might become an uber driver. there's demand for both.

They're a sanctuary city, perhaps conceitedly so, but still nonetheless. Though I do recall many stories of NYC mayor Eric Adams boasting about NYC's sanctuary status. To his defense, he's reversed course. AOC on the other hand is a lost cause.

Anyways, the NYC constituency voted for radical left wingers, and they should not be surprised when their governance reflects radical left wing policies.

I'm not arguing for or against the neoliberal perspective economic perspective. Only offering a potential explanation as to why NY might prohibit illegals from getting jobs. I mention wages are driven down -- it's mostly unskilled wages that are driven down because of cheap labor. But who benefits from cheap labor? The consumers. The doctors and lawyers of NYC don't need to worry about this. The uber drivers do.

In other words, if you're a skilled worker, it's within your interest to allow cheap unskilled labor to flourish. If you're an unskilled worker, it becomes an issue.

Yes, the illegals could educate themselves and benefit the local economy. But that's not what happens in actuality. Illegals generally take up low skilled positions and stick to them.

Are these migrants the same who have been shipped to New York and other highly democrat states from the southern border?
If I recall correctly, it was a plan conceived by Gregg Abott (the current governor of Texas) to politically pressure those democrat states.

Even keeping in mind the specific situation of New York city as a sanctuary place, it is very sad to see to what extreme some people are pushed just to seek a save place to live in.

Democrats, even if they have genuinely good intentions for immigrants, reality is more difficult to deal with than theory...

May God help those people who are homeless in the streets of New York without job...

every city should be a sanctuary city. until we get to that point, new york city can only help so many people until it spills over into other states we all know that. not sure what your issue is with AOC.

the thing is when you prevent people from getting jobs what you end up doing is forcing some of them into a life of crime. that really benefits no one.

Becoming a lawyer or a doctor is already difficult and insanely expensive for citizens of the United States. And obviously immigrants will have it more difficult, because of their status and economical situation.

It is not impossible but less likely to happen.
And if democrats forge a plan so inmigrants can increase their chances to become professionals, then they should do the same for the American people who nowadays are supposed to drown themselves in debt, in order to study anything beyond highschool.

that's what this country was built on though is adversity so if they can walk 100 miles to get to the border and go through all that then becoming a doctor would be a piece of cake.

Quote

well there are some state sponsored tuition free colleges so American people have their opportunities too.

that used to happen but hopefully not anymore.

We should not take personal amusement on these situations, to be honest. We are talking about people who are risking their life and the life of their children to try to reach the United States so they can get a better job and a better life.

On the other hand, there are Americans who live by the border who certainly do not feel like welcoming so many people around their property, it is a lose-lose situation in most of the cases.

One can hope there is a solution for all this, which would not translate to the dehumanization of people crossing the border, but also not ignoring the demands of US citizens...

it's quite a disaster though. and people are just laughing at the usa how we got into this situation.

probably.

there is no solution to it. but it does seem to be a serious problem. i've heard there are drugs being smuggled across the border. well that's always been going on though. for example:

https://nypost.com/2023/09/25/man-busted-at-border-with-400-pounds-of-cocaine-in-cucumber-boxes/

Mexican man caught trying to smuggle 400 pounds of cocaine in cucumber shipments across border

they didn't even mention the man's name which makes me wonder if they're even going to punish him or just let him go. probably just let him go.  Shocked there really should be some serious accountability for doing something like that but i guess there isn't here in the usa!

i wonder if the drug cartels have any plans to smuggle any coke across the border using migrants.

Political strategy. For what reason? I don't know.
It is interesting how in matter of a relatively short time, he has become such an prominent figure for the political right in the United States.

To be fair, I also believe it would be productive of more politicians visited their southern border, if he has had to do it (even if it is for clout) only shows something is wrong with current administration in that sense.

he's pretty much destroyed twitter. now it's called "X". last i heard he was wanting to charge people for using it. imagine if he became president. he would probably want to charge people for breathing air...

they don't want to go down there. it can be dangerous:

It is interesting how in matter of a relatively short time, he has become such an prominent figure for the political right in the United States.
he's pretty much destroyed twitter. now it's called "X". last i heard he was wanting to charge people for using it. imagine if he became president. he would probably want to charge people for breathing air...

To be fair, I also believe it would be productive of more politicians visited their southern border, if he has had to do it (even if it is for clout) only shows something is wrong with current administration in that sense.

they don't want to go down there. it can be dangerous:

Illegal Immigrant Bites Off Police Sergeant’s Finger After Arrest

but that's what they signed up for right? to protect the border.

I am very aware of the current state of Twitter after all this time it has been under the administration of Elon. And I must say it is a pity, hopefully he will step down and leave someone with more experience with social media to handle the direction of X.

Anyways, obviously the Southern border is dangerous, there are cartel members there and also human traffickers, but politicians are supposed to face those situation in order to solve the problems and challenges of the country, that is why they have got security teams, whose salaries are paid with taxes.

I would be very constructive if the leaders of Democrat party actually visited the border, but they do not seem to care of such problems, as long as they stay far away enough from Washington.

there's something called "downhill motion" things just don't go back uphill. Twitter down to X down to nothing one day. kind of like worthless NFTs.

they know what's going on. and that's exactly what they want. an invasion! they're loving every minute of it.

i predicted months ago that eventually a group of migrants will take over the whitehouse demanding more money and things. if they wanted to do it nothing could stop them.  Shocked they're going to be a huge power if they do some type of million man march.
