Click here to download the alexa toolbar.

It's easy to remove and will make bitcoin.org look like a behemoth of an online community if all of us install it!

Which will lead to more press because the site will look more credible/etc..

lol "INSTALL THIS TOOLBAR" sounds like A.) a scam B.) a virus

Sorry but that pretty much what all toolbars are
the only exceptions to this that i've seen are AV toobars(wich suck) Weather toolbars (wich i would rather have shown in my taskbar) and popup blockers

My man Wink

Do you read seoblackhat.com or did you just stumble across that post!?

Quadszilla used to be a God to me. Until he stopped posting about 2 years ago.

Yes, it is still relevant. Thousands of websites still use Alexa data and consider it useful.

Yes toolbars are a scam meant to watch where you are going online, but alexa only wants to do that, and nothing else, so they can determine which websites are the most popular. Fairly innocent imho.

Also it is quite easy to remove from any browser.

Download & install the toolbar.
Capture the traffic (with tcpdump, Wireshark,...).
Uninstall the Toolbar.
Write a script to send automated requests to Alexa featuring Bitcoin-related sites Cheesy

Although it used to be possible, I am afraid it is not anymore.

I am pretty sure I did this about 6 years ago. Or used somebody elses working script.

Today however, I am 99% sure they use nonces in every url call and salted hashes to verify them. I was looking at their API calls just the other day through firefox's "live http headers" extension.

gathering information from toolbars is exactly why alexa is a bad source of info. don't bother with it. you'll just get some privacy leaking bloatware like chrome.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Don't listen to this guy. He has no idea what he's talking about.

Alexa does not install (or wish to install anything other than) their alexa toolbar. They are a subsidiary of Amazon and quite respected.

GitHub for example boasts about their Alexa ranking on their wikipedia page (see summary section to the right) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GitHub

Install the alexa toolbar, and bitcoin will look more credible to the outside world. Case closed.

+1

From what I've heard, Alexa is completely credible. I'm not an expert by any stretch though. I just remember seeing it bandied about as a legitimate indicator of a website's worth on the Digital Point forums back when I lurked there, about three years ago.

Just to be pedantic: Wikipedia considers Alexa ratings credible. (It's not GitHub's Wikipedia page, it's a Wikipedia page about GitHub: Wikipedia editors control it, not the GitHub developers. For the same reason, the Wikipedia article on bitcoin would struggle to become an advertisement for bitcoin - Wikipedia editors unconnected to bitcoin would resist).

Either or.

If wikipedia considers the alexa ranking to be credible, then so should we. Wikipedia is to Encyclopedia Britannica as Bitcoin is to the USD.
