 Freedom of Expression  is basic right of human but most of the rulers and Government do not like criticism and truth. So they target such journalist and media which do so. If we study human history then  this fact comes out. That the truth and those who speak the truth were not tolerated. Cruelty and brutality were allowed on them. Every tactic was used to silence such people. Their hands were cut off and the true historians were imprisoned. So Today, situation is different. There is better freedom of speaking and freedom of expression. Media is very powerful and free. Every human desire the freedom of expression.

If it's your country of origin where you cannot express your freedom of speech, because you have a dictator as leader, if you don't have the resources to leave the country or for legal battles, then it's wisest to remain low key. Because if the authority decides to deal with the person, and he doesn't have a strong backing, it'll be a pity because his rights will further be trampled on. Except the person wants to be brave and face the consequences of going against the authority. Abuse of rights and privileges is to be expected in any society, some out of ignorance or in full knowledge will break the law. In cases like that the law should be judiciously applied to chastise them.

The world is full with ditectors as leaders and a lot have pushed the citizens to remain on the low key just like you mentioned,  but then also remaining low key also have it own price and that is you as a citizen will have to endure a lot of things being low key and at that you have to be ready to bear all the pains and endure every wrong doing to you as a citizen.

The answer is hard to say either yes or know because you may not be certain of what capacity to assume to be able to confront the system that be,  but if you be lucky to win then you can become a hero of your fellow citizens.

In my view, a pacific protest in support for a pacific resolution of the conflicts in Palestina - be it in support of Palestine - is absolutely acceptable. A protest in support of Palestine in which there is also support for Hamas, Hezbola or other organisations which clearly do not want any pacific resolution of conflicts is not acceptable.

Attacking people who do not support homosexuality is not acceptable -  as long as these people act pacifically and do not try to impose on others their point of view.

In other words, freedom of expression is a two way street, not an absolute.

Freedom of expression only exists if you expression doesn't cross politicians' interests. If it crosses them, then your so called freedom of expression will quickly be suppressed. But there is a difference between European countries and some islamic countries when it comes to freedom, there is a big difference but overall, they all become brutal when you act against their own political interests.

If you do not support something supported by the government, they'll call you many bad things and your freedom of expression dies because as they say, you disrespect homosexuals if you don't support them but no one talks that in Christian country, homos also disrespect Christianity. Though I do not completely share the same position as you, I can agree with you say the government or the established powers are those who are mainly responsible for the lack of free speech and responsibly for the punishments against those who want to speak freely about topics which are very sensitive to those same established powers.
One only needs to take a look at countries like Saudi Arabia or even Venezuela.
One could easily end up in prison for either saying something against the Sharia law or against the corrupt politicians from any Republic in decadence.

In a case like this, since our opinions doesn't matter to the authority, till we experience any significant positive changes we just have to stick by the laid rules. Likely said, I don't think we practice democracy as we say we do, every action from the government are not carried out with the aim interest of the citizens instead they want a cut out of the benefits. The voices of the masses are not heard, each time anyone trys to speak his being shut up, how then can we experience a change. We just closely pray and hope in dew time things will change for good.

Anyone can freely express their opinions but they must also be accountable on it.  Moreover, freedom of expression is different from fake news or propaganda spreading.  You cannot state a lie or fake news then spread it somewhere then say that it is freedom of expression.  Note that freedom of expression is bounded by the law of the country you are residing.  Historical revisionism, fake news, slander, and other things about breaking the law cannot be masked by freedom of expression.
