I agree with you that greed is the primary motivation and that loneliness is a trigger. But this does not include everyone. Any person without skills, or let us say that his only skill is that he can live alone, and has greedy desires, and does not want to put in a lot of effort, then gambling will certainly be on his list of favorite hobbies.
