He is not just lonely, he is hurting and emotionally down. A lonely and an idle mind can travel far and wide either seeking for ways to distract himself or to even end it all depending on the level of frustration.  The young man mentioned above doesn't really see gambling as a fun activity neither does he see it as a means to earn money, rather he uses it to distract and console himself.  But the negative impact of his decision is that, he has channelled all his attention and resources to gambling making him look like he is addicted.  No he is not, he is hurting and needs help .  It is just like someone who decides to take more and more alcohol to heal his hurt.
