The FBI has warned of a recent surge in activity by a group of scammers known as "phantom hackers." The scammers target older adults, often posing as tech support staff, bank employees, or government officials. They claim that the victim's financial accounts have been infiltrated by foreign hackers and that they need to take immediate action to protect their assets. The FBI has received over 19,000 complaints about the phantom hacker scam in the first half of 2023, with estimated losses totaling over $542 million.

The rate of hackers are highly increasing day by day as it seems like there's so much money coming in from the activity if not the incessant different schemes and gimmicks used by these hackers to get to their victims would have reduced but rather they keep recreating a newer pattern each time a particular type is nuke by the public. Imagine $542 million dollars just in first half of 2023 which establishes my speculation to be somehow true. They make the elderly their prime target because it is easier duping them by feeding on their fears claiming to help them stop a hack attack on their accounts  whereas they are the actual hackers.

I can still remember sometime last year one certain weekend I visited my parent living in the outskirt of the town to spend the weekend with her since it been quite long I visited, was sitting with my mum when she received a call from an unknown number explaining to her about how her bank account is having an issue which if not attended to immediately could lead to the freezing of her account until further notice and it will actually take long to have her account unfreezes if eventually freezed should she fail to render some information he (the hacker) would be requesting from her. To cut a long story short I was just listening to the conversation so I had to step in when the hacker told her to send a four digit number that she would receive any seconds as they speak so he can use it to work on her account to rectify it. And that number was an OTP number. Immediately I asked her to end the call, I blocked the phone number and told her to visit her back by Monday a working day of which she did and later called me to tell me the bank said there was nothing as such in respect to her bank account. So assuming I was present the hacker would have taken advantage this is why they target older people cause it's easier with them.
