Poloniex support personel asking me to download their app

After freezing my account and all the mumbo jambo they sent me email that says:

"Thank you for confirming that you have secured your email account.
 
We have sent you a new password via email and enabled access to your profile page so that you can confirm your identity. Please complete a very quick and simple verification using the Poloniex app for iOS or Android."

Why do they ask me to download an app, sounds a bit shady... Is this normal or am I the only one who has got message like this?

I can't say it's normal, but I also get a same message too since I unable to access my account because I don't have any access to my mail.

It was a year ago and I choose to not download their app + verify my account as my funds on there is quite small.

Before they ask this, they asked 7 questions right?

I guess the reason they ask to download their app is want to see your device to make sure it's not easily to being abused.

This could be a phishing attack; did you check to see if the email was the official one? Because most times hackers could use email that looks like the official email of a site to try to phise users of that site so do a thorough check on the email address and also the link that was sent to you if it’s the original site link.

Then go and change your password immediately and also your email address. Like I said earlier it’s possible that the email was not from the support personnel but from a hacker that wants you to believe it’s from support, so just do a proper security check on your account.

So you mean it wasn’t just the Op that have had this type of experience? I haven’t used the site before but if a site that I frequent should do this I definitely would have taken it has a phishing attack and put the mail on spam.

Centralized exchanges and many platforms will put your account with a red flag if you log in it after a very long time of inactive. Especially if you log in your account on a new device, new IP address but if this activity is done by the real owner, no big issue to prove it with simple step.

Scam exchanges can use this reason to pull their scam KYC card and it's not true to generalize it for all exchanges.

If they sent you an email with a link to a website, to download their application, you should be careful and not click on it. That can be phishing links.

Want to download an exchange application?
You can get it at their website. Again, don't click on link in email. Find their website at Coinmarketcap.com, Coingecko.com and get links for downloading.

Am sure that maybe the person contacting you is likely to be one of their old layed off staff who knows about the whole process, but now turned a scammer and trying to ruine their repyta or probably they are the one not to be trusted, any requests demanded from you while you don't make a request on should be treated as fake and an attempt for scam, downloading their apps will make nothing than for them to have your informations at the cause to be used against you later.

Looks like one of the members too said that he was told to download the app.

If you are to download the APP, I suggest you download directly using the app links that appear on their official website and not the link sent to you through the email just to be safe, log in and see what next they want you to do. I hope you did not keep a large amount of funds in Poloniex.

Do you have any significant amount asset frozen with them? If not then there are no need to go for such hassle. There are better exchanges than them, move on.

I'm not a Poloniex user but if the email has a link to Poloniex on this Play Store then it is possible that it is not a phishing app with over 500k downloads and 9.03 k reviews there's a big probability that this is their official Application a fake application cannot have these numbers.
I hope your issue will be resolved.

What are the conditions for your frozen account, are (a) you still able to log in to your account and unable to do anything, or (b) you can't access your account? Just try your old password to see if it still works on the web version, it should also work even on the app version.
If you have condition a, I think the email you received was just a hacking attempt. Someone dictates to you to reset the password he sent.

I open the link several times to see what will show up and it's always 4.4 on my end, does this mean that Playstore gives a different rating based on location, if this is true I am not aware of this only now, so it's deceptive if we just rely on these reviews because it's based on location?

Google Play show a rating based on each country, that's why the result different. Not to mention if you're from a country where Poloniex's forbid, you can't access their apps.

I don't know the @OP's case, but in my case Poloniex doesn't mail and force you to install their apps.

Accessing Poloniex need a code that sent to user mail, since I can't access my email, I ask them what's the way to resolve this, then they ask me to install their apps.

This is the reason, and I'm surprised everyone is surprised by the request!
The funny part is how exactly the OP is basically answering his own fears!  

They explicitly said in their request "simple verification using the Poloniex app" they need a visual verification, they will ask for a mugshot or two during these to prove you're an actual person, every single exchange has one of those, as it's easier for them since it's fully automated.
Again, surprised by the amount of users that treat it like some sort of odd request when it's the norm!

The most important question to be done once for all with all of this, did they link to the app in the mail, if so it is the same one that's on their website? If yes again, it's your choice, do the verification or kiss those coins goodbye

Looks fishy, usually exchanges will tell you that you shouldn't share your passwords to anyone but on this case, they're the ones sharing their user the password made for them. What's the email domain that's been used on that email sent to you together with that instruction?

I think it's just a range and it changes, looking at the same app has got the same 9.03k reviews but 3.2 stars. Yeah, could also depend on the location of the user.

Alright, you can verify if the sender's email address from which you received this message belongs to the official email addresses of the Poloniex platform as shown in the attached image, or not.



Or you can simply ignore any links in this message and download the application from Google Play or the App Store.

I advise contacting their customer service, as they will provide you with the necessary and confirmed details through the online chat. By following their instructions, they can help you unfreeze your account.
