Well, probably that is why he told OP to seek for a friend who can gamble with him, and not any random stranger on the streets. Theoretically, a friend won't scam OP and can be a trusted source of informations, but that is only in case he is a real friend who has experience inside gambling world and doesn't face any addiction issues, which would prevent OP from having a positive experience and advice from him.

Gambling for newbies I would not recommend it as if you have never gambled starting to gamble is a really bad idea and it means your life is boring if a person wanna try it.When you are a beginner you can fall prey to addiction very easily without you realizing it at all and thinking everything is normal,it can become the norm in your lifestyle which can be a very bad one if you don't know how to handle the losing of money.
