Your friend who introduced you to this forum did well but may be have little knowledge on how the forum operates. As others have said merit does nothing in the help of securing your account, what does is the ability of you to read and understand the rules guiding the forum.

Merits are good, but desperate want of merit leads to spamming, plagiarizing other people's content which will do more harm to the security of your account, maybe a permanent ban.
So... It is advised to keeping creating original contents which will benefit the forum and you will be awarded merits.

you are welcome to the forum, having merits doesn't  make you secured your account rather it navigates you from a lower rank to higher one  and without merit you cannot be included in any signature campaign, making it very necessary but not compulsory.

Now concerning the question you asked, you don't necessarily need merits to remain here because you can have a good discussion and interaction with other members with or without merits but your responses must be online with the subject of discussion otherwise your points will be regarded as off topic. On the other hand you need merit to move  to the next rank and moving to the the next ranks shows how improved you have become but above the rank and merit you need knowledge to progress to the next rank because getting more knowledge will surely bring merits to you so I suggest you hustle to improve your knowledge because it will give you other things which you need.

Don't forget that you are not here to eran merits but to learn and be more knowledgeable about bitcoin and all the stuffs in the crypto market. But if you aim to increase your position level, then might as well consider earning merits because so you will be able to join signature campaigns in the future. While getting merits is actually hard for beginners, but it will become easier once you completely understand the market and make high quality posts that would make other members to appreciate and put some merits into your post.

Merit is not needed to secure your account. What you need to secure your account is to have a good password, and follow all the rules and regulations of this forum.
But to rank up on this forum you need merit.

Your friend really tried for you by introducing you to the forum here, but maybe your friend doesn’t understand much about the forum also, just guessing, because someone who really understands the forum won’t say merit is needed to secure an account, merit is just like a reward given to someone just to appreciate the person’s hard work. So that’s not linked to the security of an account. If you want to rank up your account, you really need merit to do that. Maybe you will like to participate in signature campaigns later in the future, then you need merit for that. Apart from that, I don’t really think merit is useful in any other way.
 
It’s better you visit the forum rules and regulations and check them out, I'm sure they will be of great help to you, and you can also recommend your friend to do the same thing, it’s going to help both of you when using the forum.
 
When securing your account on the forum here. Make sure you are using a strong password, Make sure your email which you used Registering your forum account is different from what you use for other activities, make sure your email is hidden (you can do that in your settings), you can sign a message in case you lose your account to hackers, you will easily be able to recover it, and you can also add OTP to your account.

merit isn't directly a necessity for your survival, just take getting merit as acquiring your certificate, getting merit certifies that you are activity contributing to the forum and so if in the event that your service would be needed for carrying out a particular campaign in the forum, it is your merit that will grant you access to such opportunity.

Just as you don't go after your certificate without putting in the effort to doing the right thing that will grant you the needed grade, you also will need to out in the effort to ensure that you rendering a positive input to the forum and merit will start coming in.

But you need to be patient and think through a post before reacting to it and ensure that while you are giving your view about a subject matter, you are doing it maturely so you won't end up spamming the forum in your quest to making merits.

We can see them posting on interesting threads or sections like in meta or speculation section specifically on Wall of Observer thread where they share a lot of information regarding on their speculation or sentiments about the bitcoin price, what they had been notice according to news and their experiences. We can also see some notable guys in collectibles which participate on some activities happening there.

As said merit system is just needed by people who want to join on campaign since they really need to earn that so they can reach to rank and merit count requirement in a campaign. But if they are not interested on it since they think this is just a waste of time and stressful then its so fine not to join since there's more opportunities we can seen and participate. Also the knowledge we can get in this forum is a big benefits for us so I think they should not limit theirselves for thinking about those campaigns since if they learn how wide the opportunity they can get from the crypto market for sure they can say the real profit is there.

I'm sorry to say but your comment will scare the op. Perhaps you didn't understand the question op is asking correctly. Although, the post is not clear enough for us to know the exact help he needs because there's two keys words in his post which are "secure and survival". In whatever circumstances, these two things have nothing to do with merit in the forum. Without merit, one can secure their account themselves and it solely depends on how vigilant and careful they are through the use of strong password and probably enabling two factor authentication. The survival on the other hand depends on how well they coordinate themselves, paying attention to Forum rules and refrain themselves from breaking them. You don't necessarily need merit to be secured and survive here.

Additionally, it's important to note that earning merit is not by showing interest. As far as you worth it, you will definitely get it. Showing interest in merit is what keep it far from you even because you'll be desperate and probably end up obtaining it illegally. When you worry less about it, it comes to you when you are focused and doing what are expected of you.

If you don't have any future plans to increase your level or position, then don't bother working hard to earn merits. But isn't it boring to stay in a forum when you don't set any goals of improvement and you just want to stay where you are currently right now? For me, I won't settle for less if there are opportunities around that will make me grow and improved. My goal is to learn and at the same time  earn as well, hence I should not feel deteriorating but will continue to enhance if there are things that need enhancement in the process.

Merits are actually not necessary for mere survival but I have this mindset that once you earn and grow your merits, you are also improving in your own way. You make more quality and valuable posts than before, and your knowledge is also upgrading.

If yes, then merits are definitely necessary for your survival as most campaign manager will check the merits as a measure to the quality and activity of your account but if you're not really into joining signature campaigns and you just like the discussions then I don't think you'll gonna need it because you're in here for the discussion of the topics that you are curious about and merits will naturally come your way if you participate in those discussions anyway.

I agree with you; in my opinion, merit is required for everybody interested in campaign participation; however, what distinguishes novice or low rank members from higher rank members is the merit they possess, which also helps to maintain the forum's law and order. I've noticed several individuals here with higher rank who aren't interested in campaigns but rather in contributing to the forum, and as a result of their personal contributions, others began to respect them by meriting their posts due to it quality.

Yes, you are right, but not in every case. I know a few members who took the ranking up as it was a race or competition, to the extent to say "before the new year I'll be Legendary", and manage it (although a few of them almost disappeared after the achievement ).

I have always criticized that behavior/motivation to rank-up, and I think that my case is just the opposite (merits came more easily after the 1,000), but now I am less critical and as long as they don't do harm everyone is free to choose the method he/she prefers.

So we can make here a little recap: ranking up is positive in terms of recognition in the forum and participation in paid campaigns, although it is not mandatory since some members are well known and valued here even when they're just Full or Sr. Members, and some others made from a career to a fortune with the knowledge they gained here, no matter their rank.

Greetings! As I understand your friend introduced this forum to you as a Source of income/earning platform, right? So in this view what your friend said is partially correct. Because without Merit you can not rank up your account as everybody already said.

But if you have skills you can also provide your service here in this forum without having merits. For example, if you are a Designer, developer, artist, etc you can create an announcement for your service in the service section.

This is not soo because we also need activities for us to grow her. For us to grow in Bitcointalk, there is need for us to write good post and earn activities to keep growing.
