I like the school of thought you are coming from here, but in reality, it is not always like that. Self control is very important while gambling and it's even.more important that you add discipline to it as well because if you are neither disciplined nor controlled enough, you will most likely get addicted before you can realize it although like you did mentioned earlier the casino or the gambling house will not force you to gamble but your greed will.

I've found myself doing that a number of time bcause ultimately our self-control isn't very strong when faced with some of the situations in gambling that make it tricky.But its not that it cant be done its just that it's not easy because in the end there has to be some strengthening of ourselves which is precisely the self-control that is always said to be the reason when we cross the line and still think we are the most in control of ourselves in gambling but in fact it is the opposite of what happens.

Don't absolutely require yourself to stop betting, only to bring the betting cost back into an amount which can be budgeted for.   Its more sensible to adjust then hope to absolute dead stop anything.    First step to reducing betting is to just make sure the bill is not going to be a problem to your normal lifestyle costs, consider the game as just a game dont be tempted to say I must bet large amounts to pay off my debts.
   The secret is consistency, go for a consistent path don't fool yourself with random luck and a big win like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow be more realistic and imo the big problems will reduce over time there is no gambling problem at that point.   Only if you fail to control your spending you must face not being to play or gamble at all, that only should be 1% of people who bet imo not most who can just adjust their course for realistic gameplay.

I think its hard to quit gabling totally (especilly adicts) and keep to the discipline for a very long time, Gabling is more spiritual than physical. An addicted gambler is in little or no control of his gambling habits. The only effective way to stop addiction is to find a new productive hobby and substitute the gambling time for the new hobby and with time, your psychology will shift with time and you're free from addiction. Its a lot of work OP, never as easy as you're relating here, constant therapy most times helps to make the person discover the obvious dangers with addiction and guide them on how to maintain abstinence from gabling in all ramifications,
