Because if small miners start to turn off their machines, this will result in increased energy costs and lower earnings. And the average miners start to be bought by the big ones. All it takes is for 3 or 4 large miners to control 50% of the network's hash to have enormous power in Bitcoin.

Many said that this was impossible to happen, but honestly, I think that is no longer the case. Mainly because mining is becoming more centralized.

Yeah cheap power is good. but my farm was ended because a 320kwatt cheap transformer did not generate enough hash to have 4 partners.  We always made money but a 4 way split of 200k is not enough to bother running the mine.

The mine will make about 200k but only two people run it now so it is more for them.  If mining grows for the big guys that mine will end as it won't generate enough power  for enough profit.

well whatsminer can move gear 15% on a down clock in under 1 minute.

I could have 250 m50s and go from 30ph to 25.5ph in under a minute. Just a few clicks.

Not even a single click is needed in the process, I control my Whatminers based on the room temp very easily, and it takes little to no programming knowledge to fully automate the process, it won't cost over 1k for a mining company to write a good working script that would do hashrate swings based on whatever values they have it, with Whatsminer it gets even better as you can directly set the power limit, you can have a miner that uses 3.5kw tuned down to 2kw or whatever number.

Obviously, this is only useful in two cases, if your power rate is changing based on what hour of the day it is, or if you don't want to spend 100% on cooling, I saw one large guy speak about this on one of the telegram groups, the logic is, if you rate your cooling to handle the hottest hours of the years when the hottest hours don't make a good portion of the entire period, then you will end up loosing money.

Of course, the above theory is very subjective and it depends on so many factors, but say that you run a 100kw farm, and then the max temp you may ever get in your area is 35c, but that only happens for 2 months during the noon hours, say 5 hours a day for 2 months, this would give you a total of 12 days which is only like 3% of the entire year, the average temp however is always below 25c, so you run the math, say 100kw cooling at 35c requires an investment of 10k, but for 80kw at 35 or 100kw at 25 it requires 7k, you save 3k, would downclocking your gears by 20% for 3% of the year be better than spending those extra 3k? while keeping in mind that during those 12 hours your gears run more efficient so it's also less power bill.

The above is just an "example", but I am sure it does work for some people, especially those very large farms.

Well Phil, you're in the US so you should tell us how things are there, as far as I can see checking the weather in Houston and Austin (I don't know where those datacenters are) the previous week was far worse than what we have now , 3-4 degrees Celsius more than now, so shutting down because of heat doesn't match the insane blockpace we had on the 25-27..
I will put this more on possible maintenance and return from that terrible variance we had rather than massive shutting down, although we had a 1st of the month so maybe some other contracts expired?

I'm going to laugh on my own for two hours if we go below zero, we dropped from an advantage of 75 blocks to just 34 and we're at half the period.
