Like me eh, I fit speak my dialect well oh but when it comes to reading an article that is written in my dialect or even trying to write an article in my dialect eh, na suffer I go de suffer oh, I fit even manage read small for my local dialect but to fit write de hard me aswr.

I find it hard to read and post in Pidgins on this forum. Although, it is easy for me while chatting with friends online. But when it comes to this forum, I prefer English. I think it is because I read and write fast in English than Pidgin while this forum is not just a short conversion with my friend and me. If it is a long posts, I may not even finish reading it if it is in Pidgin, unlike English which is easy for me to read fast and clear.

English is easier because we were taught in school in English. Reading English from basic school to tertiary school takes decades. As we are growing, we noticed that we got better in English.

But when it comes to an average Nigerian, we know say most of us fit speak our Hausa, Igbo, yoruba or Efik well but when it comes to writing in those our local language eh, e de always de very difficult.

It is easy for me to speak my local language. Also easy for me to write my local language. But to read it is hard for me just like Pidgin. If it is conversation online with my friend and me, I find it easy for those short conversations. I even use with my local language to chart with people than they do with me. But if it is a long text, I will not even finish reading it as I find it difficult to read and that will make me slow to read it finish.

Well, many if us for real life dey speak pidgin pass English. That one na normal thing as a nija person. Our local language for instance my own na Esan, na to only talk to people Dem wey come from my home town. Most times you go see say na state government dey put am as compulsory subject for children wey dey primary school. This one go help them know how to speak and write them local direct well. The thing be say, sofa u Sabi hear or speak you dialect, writing no really matter. That one na because no body go force you write am for any where. Na your personal language. Even pidgin wey e be say na every body own for we country, no still dey compulsory to speak or write as a nija person. These languages na watin we as Nigerians know same with other countries and them local Language. If you go another country you go need t learn the language so you go fit communicate with them.

No body dey force anybody to learn am, na something you fit do out of your own will. Jus as I don talk am before for one of my post, English and pidgin na the two accepted language for we local board. So no you fit choose  watin you wan write and people go still respond. Provide a poll for this because I think that at the end, the poll result may show that the number of people who cannot speak and write in their local dialect is more or almost more than the number of people who can speak and write well in their local dialect. The truth is because many people have migrated from their place of birth the other place is in search of greener pastures and better opportunities they get married to people from those places, mix up and sometimes even give birth and raise children in those communities where their language is not what is spoken as a result of this many children grow up in places far from their origin and then end up not being able to learn the language even writing. Parents should have this as a responsibility to ensure that their children always learn to write and speak their native and local dialects.

It does not mean. You can post in English or Pidgin. There is not rule that if a post is in Pidgin, that the topic title should also be in Pidgin. We all understand both English and Pidgin and we can do it the way we want.

Example if I am chatting with a friend. Like: How far bro? I dey. Or Bawo ni? Those are easily to read fast. But if it is getting longer, like posts on this forum, I find it slow to read and there is more energy I put on it to read it to understanding. I can easily use both informally but easily prefer to use English formally.

It is not about how you use the Pidgin. I can easily understand but difficult to continue to read it continually for long.

Omo any how you write your pidgin English I go still read am. Me na born and brought up 9ja guy. as even say we dey write Pure English no mean say person no ft write am for pidgin. I wounder wetting hard for oga @charls Tim to read and write pidgin although everybody no fit be thesame. For me, e dey very simple because as e be like this, for Facebook and WhatsApp, all my friends na Pidgin we dey carry dey chat and e don master me. Even as i dey type am e just be like normal English wey I dey type.

So make we dey try our best to dey speak our pidgin English since e be say we no get standard language like India or China. To write for local dialect go hard for of us Nigerians because dem no teach us from school how to write in them. Na d three popular languages for the country; Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba na him dem teach for school and no be compulsory for some schools and also for some schools you go just chose one to do and leave the rest. The concentration was more on English, French and in some schools Arabic. So our people find am easy to write in those languages and read fluently with dem dan d local dialects in the country.

That one na to make am compulsory from school, make e dey part of the curriculum for school and make everybody go learn him mother tongue as a core subject in school. With that, e go improve the writing and reading of local dialects too. So many languages in Nigeria go get people wey don sabi everything about the languages and go fit write am for books to be used in classes. That na the only way dis thing fit dey easy for our people to learn from am.

All this na because sae they were not taught how to read and write in their local dialect from school, till adulthood. What they were taught in school especially na how to read and write in English because English na the major and acceptable language give every Nigerian for easy communication since we get diverse ethnicities for the country.

We go start from the grassroots. From our family to the schools wey we attend(from nursery to tertiary). Let every family and school begin to the make their local dialect a compulsory subject wey everybody go d learn for schools. Irrespective of your background or the school wey you attend(private or local). Make every family take upon themselves to d teach their children on how dem go read and write for their dialect.

If it is done in that manner, we no go too d see cases of where so many people go know how to speak their dialect but them no know how to read and write am for book.

Throughout my primary school, my school make am compulsory for every student, so e come make me dey very good for the language. But overtime i  dn reduce for the way wey i dey read and write am. Currently i dey read and write am but e dey take small time to make sense for my head sha.

Omor, make I talk based on my own self, for me, I prefer to use broken (pidgin language) because of say nah my language, but the matter be say, to write am no be the problem but to read am dey hard me sha.
And I see am say nai make many of us prefer the English language pass the pidgin language, just because e dey hard for them to read am, as pipo dey read English language with just one look but when e comes to pidgin language them gets to look am 2 times before them go fit understand watin the person dey try talk.

This our country itself is filled with lots of language diversity and so many of these language are minority to the very core and if I can recall I don't actually think that most of these language are even taught in schools or even added to their work in academics except for the most genuine and well recognize ones. And that's one reason why most of these language aren't really knownable when it comes to people being able to write and understand the meaning.

There is every tendencies that each and every members in this Naija local forum would still have to participate on other forums which are strickly on English languages. I would keep saying this... Naija has no specific language instead it has diverses of language which English was adopted to be its unified language but due to a collective measure, series of the local diverse languages tends to be complied in mixture of the English language to the Pidgin English language so that it could be manageably fluent exercised at communications.

I guess you're getting the whole essence of the thread wrong or you didn't understand it.

I'm not talking about being able to write correctly in pigin. We all know that writing in pigin doesn't require a particular order or spelling guide. You do the writing which ever way you want and as long as the reader is able to comprehend what information you are passing, then you're good to go. That's the reason why we sometimes use slangs that could be peculiar to a particular region in our pigin and others might not understand but people close to that region and that are conscious of the street vibes will relate easily.

What I'm talking about is the ability to reading or writing in our native dialect like the one we speak in the village. It's always very difficult to read or write using them. For people that are Christians, you know they actually translated the Bible to our local dialect like the Huasa, Igbo, Yoruba and the rest and normally when you get to the village during festive seasons, they normally would ask you, like in my church to read the Bible for them since they believe that you can read, but because you've not been familiar with reading in your local dialect, you will tend to struggle with it.

I dont think it is necessary to know how to write in our individual dialect because we have a general lingua franca which is the english language. Speaking our dialect is cool because it allows fluent communication between individuals from the same ethnicity.

99% of the population in our country do no write in their local dialect. This is because it is difficult to communicate with writing to people. It do not enhance communication so there is no essence for it.
