When I attempt to "Open Wallet" in Core v26.0, and this also happened in v25.0, it hangs.  Nothing is written to the log file, the menu stays open and then after a couple minutes closes as if nothing happened.  I've rebooted, reinstalled core, etc.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure the debug.log is empty? What about looking at Event Viewer, or whatever log system available on your OS? Have you tried installing it on another disk? Anything changes that makes your Bitcoin Core suddenly throw this error, or it is like this from the first time you install it? I got the same error on another app whenever I tried to open a file because my disk was dying, although I'm not sure if that's the case here (assuming you run Windows too) since the app is not even related to Bitcoin Core. It would really help you can describe more about the problem plus what troubleshooting you've done in more detail so others with more experience can help you.

Is the wallet file you are attempting to open compatible with the version of Bitcoin Core you are using? Is there sufficient disk space available where the Bitcoin Core data directory and wallet files are stored?

Nothing is written to the log file, the menu stays open and then after a couple minutes closes as if nothing happened.
You may be looking at a different directory or file.
It should be the "debug.log" file inside bitcoin data directory, if you've set a custom datadir in the Welcome Menu, look for the log file there.
After finding it, share the last session here (from the earliest "Bitcoin Core version v26.0.0 (release build)" line to the last).

If you mean "nothing related to the open-menu", the issue can be related to the scan process after loading the wallet which errors could be written in the log.

Also, please indicate your machine's specs.

Any thoughts?
Any chance Bitcoin Core doesn't have write access to the data directory?
Have you tried starting Bitcoin Core from the command line? It may show some output there.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried different device (using VM also counts) or different wallet file?

Is the wallet file you are attempting to open compatible with the version of Bitcoin Core you are using?

This is a bad question. Bitcoin Core maintain backward compatibility and have ability to open wallet created with older version of Bitcoin Core.

One of the reasons  for this might be  corrupted database. Did you initiate IBD process after reinstalling Bitcoin Core?  The reason I'm asking is that sometimes reindex and/or reindex-chainstate don't help to correct the faulty copy of blockchain on your machine  thus starting download from scratch saves both time and nerves.

This is a bad question. Bitcoin Core maintain backward compatibility and have ability to open wallet created with older version of Bitcoin Core.

Following versions of Bitcoin Core will lose this compatibility.

Running Windows 10. Core v26.  Every other activity from Core is being written to the debug.log so I’m not concerned that it has access nor if I am looking at the right file.

Here is what it does.  If I go to File —> Open Wallet where it shows an arrow for a slide out menu, it stalls at that point.  Nothing written to log.  I’ve ended the explorer.exe process and started that process back up, just to make sureWindows Explorer wasn’t causing the issue.

What is the command line approach to opening the wallet, maybe that approach could get around the UI issue to narrow it down.

Yes, reindexed recently by mistake but without issue.  Not 100% tracking why this could cause a wallet issue. So talk this out a bit, advising to download a fresh copy of the entire chain into a different directory?

What is the command line approach to opening the wallet, maybe that approach could get around the UI issue to narrow it down.
Try it in the GUI's console first:
  • Go to "Window->Console".
  • Select "wallet: (none)" (not required)
  • Then type: loadwallet "wallet_name" true

In the command line, use bitcoin-cli with the same command as the above:
  • Use Windows Explorer and go to daemon/bin folder inside bitcoin's install directory (default: "C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\daemon")
  • Click "File->Open Windows Powershell".
  • In Poweshell, type the command: ./bitcoin-cli loadwallet "wallet_name" true

But in order for bitcoin-cli to work with bitcoin-qt, you must use --server arg with your bitcoin-qt or server=1 in 'bitcoin.conf' file.
In case you've set a custom data directory and not using rpc username and password, --datadir= should also be indicated for it to find the ".cookie" file in that directory.

You can change "true" to "false" if you do not want to keep the wallet loaded in the next session. (not recommended if 'prune block storage' is enabled)

Update:  This worked.  Opened core, then Console.  Used "loadwallet" and it loaded. Still won't work from the GUI menu.  Odd.

Thank you everyone for the help.
