Hi everyone,
I'm trying to learn how to repair ASICs and as I have a few S9 boards that don't work I thought they would be good for practice.

I have a repair guide from antminer that I have downloaded but to be honest most of it is over my head and the board shown is a different version to mine.
I'm picking bits up here and there online but as most guides seem to dive into finding a faulty chip but as the first board I have here hardly has any voltage at the domains, I feel I need to take a step back and understand how the power circuits work.

I have V4.21M boards

I definitely have 12v coming into the board but very low voltage at the domains, I believe less than 0.1v

I'm convinced I should be starting at the DC-DC circuit but I'm struggling to figure out where to test for the voltage and then how to test each component.

If anyone could point me in the correct direction it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Well, that is the normal behavior at certain times, the power won't feed into the chips unless commanded by the control board, which is why you can't do the voltage testing using just the stock control/firmware, the fixture tools do that for you, they sent continues voltage so you can test the voltage without a rush, otherwise, the stock control board would only feed the voltage in the initial test and then stops, the official Bitmain fixture tool sold by Zeusbtc isn't that great in that aspect too, you only get a few seconds to test (better than stock of course), there is another tool that ships from Russia (or at least used to) I think the official website is https://tester.asic.repair/en, this one is a lot easier to use and gives you all the time you need to test the voltage.

With that said, I think this goes beyond just understanding how to use the tool, fixing hashboards needs some general understanding about electronics, if you don't have that -- it would be hard to fix them.

I don't know what is in the guide you are following but I guess it is the 5 test points where you can check the signals which chips giving abnormal voltage.

If that's the only repair guide you can see on "Antminer repair" they didn't include the other guides related to other components.

ZeusBTC guide is gives you more insight including other components so I suggest to check this link below

Oh I see, I didn't realise that!
I guess I will have to look into getting one of those test fixtures, I was assuming they just speed up the process of finding a faulty chip.

Thanks for the above info, I've ordered the bitmain test fixture to get started but still plenty to learn.

Could I check if anyone can spot anything obvious here?

Thanks for the above info, I've ordered the bitmain test fixture to get started but still plenty to learn.

Could I check if anyone can spot anything obvious here?

I thought that you already checked these Hashboards on the test fixture? it seems this logs is directly from the unit not from the test fixture.

What I could see is the 0 ASIC with error codes.

But I noticed something weird under the fan it shows abnormal value. The faulty fan can sometimes give you 0 ASIC to all hashboard so what I would like you to try is if you have an extra s9 unit try to swap it with a known working one.

Sorry about the confusion. I have ordered the test fixture but it's not here yet, I'm just seeing what I can figure out while waiting.

I actually have 2x new fans and so will use those and get back to you later today.

Could I ask what the "something weird" under the fan is? Just trying to learn what to look out for other than obvious Errors.

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't think the new fans have made any difference.

Unfortunately I don't think the new fans have made any difference.

Code:
Chain[J6] has 0 asic
Chain[J7] has 0 asic
Chain[J8] has 0 asic

I don't see any fan-related errors in the first kernel log you posted. The issue lies in the three lines I quoted. The hashboards are receiving power for the initial chip-count test, but the signal isn't returning. In other words, the control board is not sensing even the first ASIC chip in the first domain. The '0 chip' problem is a bit tricky.

it could be a bad chip somewhere or some other issue on the hashboard. If you want to start fixing your own hash boards, I believe you need to obtain at least one working board to compare it against the non-functional ones. The fixture tool won't be of much help in this case; it will still point you to the first chip. Again, this isn't a simple task, so good luck.

I don't know if the fans you replaced are working but would you mind to try to boot the unit with Braiins OS and enable the immersion mode? So that it would ignore the fan check and for testing purposes.

Take note you can boot Braiins OS on this unit without flashing it and to make sure that the fan is not the culprit.
Paste the kernel logs and system logs here after.

Also, check the fan terminal try to clean it with isopropyl alcohol use a brush to clean the fan terminals and let see if we can see some improvement.

I hope the fixture will arrive soon because you can check these 3 hashboards if they are already dead or working.

Hi guys, sorry about the delay but I now have the test fixture and been having a mess around but as I don't have a working board, I'm not even sure that I'm using it correctly. All boards are coming back with "asic num=0, config asic_num=63"

Some good news... The first board I have in front of me seems to have the correct voltages across the domains with just the power supply connected.
Around 0.44v +/- across each domain. 8.0v+ across them all.

Could anyone advise on the next step?

I wish there was a step by step process to testing, I'm finding the bitmain maintenance guide too muddled. All of the information is probably in front of me but I'm struggling at the moment.

My first post should be the right link you need to follow if you suspect the hashboard had hardware issues if you have a good PSU and known hashboard data cable(ribbon) better check them first before you suspect the hashboard had a hardware issue.

Get some idea on how they troubleshoot the 0 ASIC below

Thanks Bitmaxz,

Domains are fine at 8.7v, I then moved onto the RI voltage and got excited when I noticed some having 2.2v rather than 1.8v but it seems this is normal for the top and bottom row. I will continue to work through.
