I've said many times in other posts that ethereum is the mother of altcoins. and I don't think that can be argued with.
altcoin lovers will certainly agree with that. regardless of market conditions, ethereum remains a pioneer and price determinant for other altcoins.

Ethereum is a good choice to keep on holding and accumulating when possible. I don't think a lot of investors would be making good profit unless they have be holding it from 2011 or they have invested in it before 2021. If not then there are other coins like Ethereum that are showing positive sign in the market. Like you said BNB which is backed by the biggest exchange in the world. Recently Solana started doing good and it is still a cheap if compared to Ethereum and BNB in price and the team is doing great with its development and marketing. I would be focusing on these three crypto before the bull run as they have the potential to explode.

Now you can compare the cost of a fairy between ETH and BNB, the latter is more profitable. In this case, I prefer BNB/OpBNB and zkSync - small fees and the speed of the network itself. Yes Ethereum is very trusted among alt coins to invest.  This year its price has also increased a lot. This is what can be invested.  But BNB is good for investment.  Those who have low budget and don't want to invest in BTC can invest in them for now.  Ethereum, BNB, Sol, Binance are good for investing in alt coins. I think bnb with Ethereum is very safe for investment. Among altcoins, I mostly invest in these two coins. Those who want to invest for a short time, you can invest in bnb and Ethereum from altcoin. the thing that makes me fond of investing in ethereum is probably the fact that its being used massively for staking in various project and these staking locked for quite long time period adding demand to the ethereum itself.
if it frequently being utilized like that im sure in the future other project will also follow, right now blast already reaching more than 1 billion TVL in form of ethereum alone if im not mistaken followed by manta, and so on.
its clear that these project just always try to utilize ethereum moreover the fact that ethereum l2s nowadays are just increasing in the amount so many reputable devs deploying their own L2 goes to show that ethereum will never fades.
honestly my money always go to either bitcoin or ethereum, its always these two that are really good for investment.

If you want long-term trading, Bitcoin and Ethereum are a suitable choice, but for short-term trading, some altcoins have the opportunity to rise faster.

I'm planning to apply short term trading before but since you said BTC and Ethereum are good for long term trading, I think I will include BTC because Ethereum was my target this year based on what I experienced from the little Ethereum I bought last 3 years despite I didn't apply long term but I still earn something good from them. I prefer to use short term on  other altcoins like Solana, Dogecoin trading, if I have the money to invest on them but Ethereum is my major target in this season which I know I will surely invest on Ethereum and apply long term hodling on them to improve my profits when bull run occur.

Ethereum is always a good choice but it was best to spread our funds to different coins as well like BNB. There are several potentially profitable coins, can't mention them all but you can check at https://coinmarketcap.com/. Most investors are choosing the top altcoins in the market but it doesn't mean you take them all, at least aside from ETH there are 2-3 coins to hold as well. But don't miss the chance with Bitcoin, if you invest ETH then make sure also that you accumulated BTC already.

No one having any doubt about Ethereum potential and its coming things which will create good hype with good profit for the investors as well, but I believe never put all your eggs in one bucket because this is never been ideal just because of this I usually try to keep faith in 4 to 5 coins which I feel can do good with my investment in coming months and years specially I prefer Bitcoin after this I love to keep things in Ethereum and BNB, and then I have few more like Litecoin and Dogecoin these are best for me for years.
But with these all I also regularly invested in few meme coins as well because I mostly keep eyes on market and then have some profit from them which is good for me as it's risky but good for me.
