Manipulation in sports is an open secret that we all know about. Even if listed, there are probably quite a lot of cases of cheating and manipulation in the sports industry and the practice is still ongoing today. In some cases, it even involves a betting platform to be able to win for one of the teams by paying many parties so that they can profit from the match. Even though currently the practice of cheating is much reduced in popular leagues, because people are increasingly aware of honest and fair sports, in small leagues there may still be a lot of manipulation going on, and that should be a concern for stakeholders in sports because manipulation of matches is something that is not justified and will harm many parties.

You have named top tiers scandals which have made the news and history of football yet most of the problems happen in lower leagues and they go unnoticed as no one cares for a result in Norway division 7.So the defense is to not bet on these lower leagues.

For the scandals for me as a football fan the biggest scandal up to date is Calciopoli where Luciano Moggi had bought many referees to favor Juventus in many games,so had done also other big teams managers there.There is no bigger scandal than this in my opinion.

I believe DOTA2 is now the hot e-sports for match fixing because many Chinese teams already done this in the past and get banned and match fixing here can be done in a not too obvious way because it involves team fight and long game matches.

There’s currently 3 Chinese team right now being under investigation due to accusations of match fixing during the recent TI qualifiers on China. There’s also a lot of this news to even before on different regions.

Also, There’s a lot of pro dota player in my country that doing some live stream about gambling betting even though they have an upcoming match. They are betting on matches that within the league which their team is participating so there’s a high chance that they do match fixing by themselves. E-sports is very hard to regulate since it’s done online that’s why match fixing is very common on this sports.

The issue of match fixing is an age-long one that have defiled solution for several years even though the regulators have been making serious innovations to at least reduced it including punishing offenders caught to serve as deterrent but it still persist till recently. I believe the introduction of the VAR in soccer is part of the fight against match fixing. I do not have much knowledge about other sports but I know that it reduced the possibility of rigging in soccer. I am particularly interested in learning more about this fixed games and how they work. I know the information is classified and rarely easy to come by.

Since you mentioned that you have been sports betting for long, I'm sure you do your fair share of research trying to win your bets. My post was inspired by another thread here, where some unsuspecting bettor had bet on some sport that doesn't even exist. Which got me thinking about all the dodgy leagues that exist solely for betting purposes and are sponsored by bookmakers which direct the players on what course of actions to take in such a way that the bookmaker makes the most profit out of it. In that process, some people will win their bets but most will lose. My OP is just a caution into the wind that rigging could happen even in mainstream sports. So, you gotta be extra cautious if possible and not make significant bets on events that could be potentially rigged.

IMO, doing research before each bet will not provide a guarantee of winning the match, it can only increase the chances of winning that we will get and the odds given by the bookmaker will not guarantee that we will always win, even if it is small odds look convincing, sometimes small odds lead us astray.
I remember there was a thread talking about a bettor betting on the NFL throwing away $1.4 million worth of bets to bet at odds less than @1.01 and perhaps that bettor foolishly believed in the low odds just to get a small win but didn't see how big it was the risk he is taking, and I agree with what you said that don't bet too big because we don't know what is planned behind the scenes.
In the case of bettors who lose big, I don't think it's rigged, but for me there are indications that it could be rigged when the opposing team makes a surprising comeback.

maybe the story I am telling can be an example and we still have to be careful, don't trust too much in low odds or big odds, but still do strict research to avoid surprises like that.

You said, beware about match-fixing. The only question, from where did you know the match are gonna to be match-fixing ? from my perspective is better to betting on the (Big-League) even still have some match fixing the chance are small. Most the time of match fixing is from low bracket or unknown league, If not wrong (stake) getting a caught someone who are match fixing on (Tennis Russia Table) is unknown player/match.

For many years I have suspected that my country's football league is a manipulated league, or a league in which the games are fixed. I may be wrong, but there are a lot of bad things happening in my country's league. for example, the players in my country's leagues have a very low salary and the teams in my country are bankrupt, they don't have money to pay for flights for the players, they don't have money to build good stadiums so with this lack of funds it opens up space for some teams that have more money bribe other poor teams and arrange for the poor team to lose the game on purpose so that the team with more money wins the game. I came to this conclusion because the teams with the most money always win the league in my country

but the problem is that the teams from my country with more money don't play well, and something is visible, anyone who watches the teams with more money from my country playing for 90 minutes will see that they don't play at all and that person will question themselves. How is it possible that those teams are winning games, how is it possible that those goals are going in, because it is obvious that the defense and the goalkeepers of poor teams let the goals in on purpose. This became very visible that bookmakers refused to add my country's league for people to bet on. but unfortunately my country's corrupt government never does anything to change this situation because it benefits them a lot during election campaigns.

Ex-Everton footballer Li Tie 'sentenced to life in prison' for match-fixing and £300k job bribe. The £300k job bribe was to become the Chinese National team coach and has a list of accepting bribe for various fixing as well. The sentencing was in China and it is a bit harsh to be sentenced to life but that's how things go in China.

Definitely, it's just an isolated case, as the NBA doesn't put a lot of investigation into putting those who are involved in jail. Try to watch Tim Donaghy's interview, so you can also hear his side of the story. It's like he was just a fall guy here, but it's been done. What we can do now is just speculate, and there's no right or wrong here. We have our own opinion on what happened in the past, and that will forever stay; some will believe the NBA is rigged.

Just to add on the list you provided, there was a scandal back in 2021 called the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup game-fixing scandal¹ which involved two (2) basketball teams who played for a loss. Funny thing is, the game ended with a score of 27-13 and there were suspicions arising from that said event.

If you would watch the video that I will post below, there is an unusual amount of free throws made and players were clearly missing it. Shots were intentionally missed and the players were playing half-assed the whole game. At the end, the Philippines sought their own investigation, which revoked the license of those teams and suspended + fined the players and coaches.

I have not suspected a team that is there to win a trophy to follow a referee to rigged themselves out from the competition but I have witnessed such behaviour from a referee in a world cup between Nigeria and Argentina. And really the referee rigged the game for Argentina to win. And I believed because of all these malicious behaviors of the referees, VAR was introduced to coil the situation but the way we see things VAR also at the rigging side of the game.  VAR can't eradicate rigging from football. I think in the last Nations Cup of Africa, after the competition, a coach in one of the European Football Team, said VAR should be centered in Africa. Lolz. Rigging continue.
