~ and who are willing to mine them and give them for free.
Last time I tried, I couldn't mine using CPU. There's not much left to mine anyway: the block reward is 0.01220703, and in some blocks fees are higher than that.

If an idiot wants to trade real, hard cash for, by definition, worthless tokens, then let them do it.
The problem is that someone manages to earn money from this. But I still prefer that over spamming the real Bitcoin blockchain to sell Ordinal crap, so indeed: let them do it Smiley

Have you tried this guide?

There's not much left to mine anyway: the block reward is 0.01220703, and in some blocks fees are higher than that.
And how much do you need for testing?  Tongue

The problem is that someone manages to earn money from this.
I know, but is it really our concern? There is a host variety of scam coins out there that are equally worthless, and nobody gives a damn. Call me a bit of a harsh, but I consider "gullible newbies" not so innocent and naive. Every person who takes part in these schemes simply wants to make money; they know it's likely a useless token, but will do whatever the "project" says to earn the airdrop. They're equally guilty.

Yes (see that same thread). It's futile, even on testnet the hashrate is far too high for CPU.

A few mBTC is enough to open LN-channels, but with such low block rewards, there's not much to give away. And since most people don't have an ASIC laying around to mine some, there aren't many options left.

They also spam others to convince them to buy whatever BS they made up, and I do believe some of them, although gullible and naive, don't deserve to get scammed. But I can't do more than warn against it, and that's a losing battle anyway. There's always a new sucker to get scammed.

For years I was helping members with Bitcoin Testnet coins but in last few weeks I noticed a big increase of newbie members asking me for coins.

There is another member with faucet in forum that was abused and emptied, and I started receiving messages from members asking for coins.

This is very suspicious to me, so I ask if there is some bounty campaign or project that is paying money for testnet coins?

who are you to point with the finger how testcoins should be use it, free will shoud be part of the bitcoiners culture, no one should try to ban, control, etc the use of testcoins, i saw what they are doing is TESTING  with small amounts  of BTC less than 0.01 this year more than a million people is learning how to use bitcoin testnet and that is good for bitcoin, the real problem here  are you people ! trying to tell people how to uses blockchain even test coins. are you serious  ? i have been folowing bitcoin since 2009. let people use bitcoin testnet so they can understand.

i've never see so many people using bitcoin testnet this year and learning and asking everything. let the people learn about bitcoin (that is what Satoshi Nakamoto wish).

if you want to help people teach them how use bitcoin how create wallets etc, create a free course for the new people. DONATE can help people but TEACHING is more valuable.

dont be greede with new people let them learn.

The problem is that people were asking for the coins to test, but in fact they wanted to make some money with them by using them in some shitcoin airdrop, that is, they abused the OP's good faith to suck up their coins for their own benefit, and not for educate themselves about bitcoin.

So the OP has every reason to be upset, I would be too, I would feel deceived.

Now people who really want to learn about bitcoin will find it more difficult to obtain the coins, meaning some bad people harm everyone else who had good intentions.

If you're referring to the "airdrop" spammers, you couldn't be more wrong. That has nothing to do with Bitcoin, and they're not learning how to use Bitcoin. They're learning how to jump through hoops to get made-up BS tokens.
Besides, Bitcoin testnet isn't meant to teach users how to use a Bitcoin wallet, that's pretty much straight forward. It's meant for developers to test the things they're building without putting their real money at risk.

When people ask for OP's coins, he can do whatever he wants.

If you've been following Bitcoin since 2009, i would expect you know that
1. Many developer complain it's tricky to obtain tBTC.
2. This isn't first time people abuse tBTC for NFT, token or altcoin airdrop.
3. Testnet has been reset twice since in past people not using tBTC for development or learning purpose.

You're naive if you actually believe those who ask tBTC in order to get airdrop actually want to learn about BTC.
