Yes and No.  Yes money is one of the motivations but not purely.  Some people, once they achieved a certain amount of money, their motivation shift from money to their passion.  Maybe charity works are their passion so they invest their efforts and perseverance in order to help others, some will choose to study to get recognition from someone (from their parents, friends, community, or spouse).  Money may be one of the most encouraging asset that one can offer for someone to persevere, but there are other also depending on an individual.

While you are true, there's this thing that's called self-actualization. Not everone's born with the innate desire to become dirty rich and have all the nicest things on the planet. In fact, a good amount of people would rather just live contented with a pretty okay-ish amount of money in the bank, as long as they get to be what they want to be at the end of the day.

This is where those other careers come in. To some extent working hard will help and give you good result but there will be a point in time one needs to switch and start putting less effort but will get more result.
