I love reading about bitcoin and the forum. But sometimes these articles contain information that are lengthy and somehow complicated and technical. I have always wanted a summarised and more simplified version but could not get. But one day, I read the footer of an Op, after the signature space. I discovered there's a write up there and that writeup is seen in same position in all Original Posters (OP). I understood that they are Bitcointalk factiods. I have enjoyed reading them for days now. Immediately I login, I'll start reading them before I'll make some posts. It's enlightening, entertaining and some are humorous. I decided to make a collection of it for learning purposes. I have searched and didn't see anything like that. I don't like making repetitive threads, if there's a similar thread I'll lock this.
This will be helpful to newbies and at same time it is forum related. I don't know if it best fits here or in the beginners and help. Moderators feel free to move the post if it is not appropriate here.

FACTOID ONE:
Make sure you back up your wallet regularly! Unlike a bank account, nobody can help you if you lose access to your BTC.
My Question or Input:
Does this also imply to offline backup. Whereby I am needed to always go check by backup seed phrase?

FACTOID TWO:
How can the Bitcoin system be changed?
My Question or Input:
You need to read, this as music was used to differentiate between Hard fork and soft fork. It is purely satisfying to read if you understand music or song.

FACTOID THREE:
Remember that Bitcoin is still beta software. Don't put all of your money into BTC!
My Question or Input:
I know that BTC is still in the beta software. I also know that it is not good to put all your money in BTC. But, will there ever be an upgrade from the beta version of BTC and when will this happen?

FACTOID FOUR:
"I'm sure that in 20 years there will either be very large transaction volume or no volume." -- Satoshi
My Question or Input:
It is not upto 20 years yet but what Satoshi said is already happening. What exactly did Satoshi say? He made a statement of two faces. If there is large transaction volume, Satoshi is right, if no volume, he is also right  Grin

FACTOID FIVE:
With e-currency based on cryptographic proof, without the need to trust a third party middleman, money can be secure and transactions effortless." -- Satoshi
My Question or Input:
Thanks Satoshi, many thought it was a joke but you and the early developers who believed your idea achieved this.

FACTOID SIX :
Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.
My Question or Input:
Which is why re-using of an address is not encouraged. If you keep using one address for all your transactions, you are not enjoying the full value of bitcoin in terms of anonymity.

FACTOID SEVEN:
Whoever mines the block which ends up containing your transaction will get its fee.
My Question or Input:
So, miners are a way richer during this mempool congestion. No wonder it persisted.

FACTOID EIGHT :
Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money
My Question or Input:
I wasn't told this when I was a newbie. I had to type the address and even count the alpha-num manually to be very sure my BTC is not going to a wrong destination Angry

FACTOID NINE:
The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.
My Question or Input:
If the network is as flexible as said above, why developers have misunderstanding leading to hard fork. Soft forking should have always been the solution for
improvements

FACTOID TEN:
If you want to be a moderator, report many posts with accuracy. You will be noticed.
My Question or Input:
Theymos, is this the only criterion for being a moderator? I'll start my reporting job tomorrow  Cool

FACTOID ELEVEN:
Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally controlled networks like Napster, but pure P2P networks like Gnutella and Tor seem to be holding their own." - Satoshi
My Question or Input:
True statement, but it should also be a concern that the centralized p2p is becoming more popular than the original p2p proposed by Satoshi.

FACTOID TWELVE :
Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.
My Question or Input:
Too late to be a miner? Those guys are enjoying.

FACTOID THIRTEEN :
Activity + Trust + Earned merit == The Most Recognized Users on Bitcointalk
My Question or Input:
Top 10 most recognised Users;
  • theymos
  • philipma1957
  • OgNasty
  • DaveF
  • LoyceV
  • yahoo62278
  • cygan
  • gmaxwell
  • The Sceptical Chemist
  • LFC_Bitcoin
Welldone heros, it takes determination and passion for bitcoin to be in this list.

FACTOID FOURTEEN :
"Your bitcoin is secured in a way that is physically impossible for others to access, no matter for what reason, no matter how good the excuse, no matter a majority of miners, no matter what." -- Greg Maxwell
My Question or Input:
What does Gmaxwell mean by "physically impossible for others to access..." But bitcoin is not a physical currency or asset?

FACTOID FIFTEEN :
The trust scores you see are subjective; they will change depending on who you have in your trust list.
My Question or Input:
Noted!

FACTOID SIXTEEN:
The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.
My Question or Input:
I guess this means if the time is shorter to elapse, difficulty will be less and vice versa.

FACTOID SEVENTEEN :
No Gods or Kings. Only Bitcoin
My Question or Input:
The shortest and most inspiring factoid without an author.

FACTOID EIGHTEEN :
Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.
My Question or Input:
If we say "created out of thin air..." It looks as if the subsidy is not among the 21 million bitcoin in existence.

FACTOID NINTEEN:
"There should not be any signed int. If you've found a signed int somewhere, please tell me (within the next 25 years please) and I'll change it to unsigned int." -- Satoshi
My Question or Input:
hay! I have seen a signed integer, where is Satoshi, I want to tell him.

FACTOID TWENTY :
20. In order to achieve higher forum ranks, you need both activity points and merit points.
My Question or Input:
Now that I have a higher activity points to go to senior member but my merit points are lower, what should I do?

Thanks for reading till the end. I have started enjoying this forum more than before.

My Question or Input:
Does this also imply to offline backup. Whereby I am needed to always go check by backup seed phrase?
It simply means that you should always have backup of your wallet seed phrase and private keys. In fact I believe it meant more as multiple backups so if someone loses one of those backups then he/she may not lose access to wallet because he/she has other backups.

I think that quote was just a warning because putting all of your money into BTC isn't suggested that's why you should be careful. No, I believe that Bitcoin will always be a beta version that won't change anytime.

Satoshi might have said that because he wasn't sure about the future of Bitcoin, he wasn't sure that one day Bitcoin will have a huge community. But, he somehow thought that there's chance that one day Bitcoin could have a huge community and that day it will have huge volume.

FACTOID TEN:
If you want to be a moderator, report many posts with accuracy. You will be noticed.
My Question or Input:
Theymos, is this the only criterion for being a moderator? I'll start my reporting job tomorrow  Cool
That's a straight statement, the more posts you reports and if your reports have high accuracy then you will get a chance to be part of moderator team. I believe everyone should report the posts which deserve to get reported, which are created to cause spamming or they somehow break other rules of the forum.

Yes, it's true your Bitcoin is secured in soft form so no one can access it physically. But, surely if they get your seed phrase and private keys then no one can stop them from transferring your Bitcoin. Physically impossible means that even if a thief enters your house and steals cash, gold, and others things they still he won't be able to steal your Bitcoin.

FACTOID TWENTY :
20. In order to achieve higher forum ranks, you need both activity points and merit points.
My Question or Input:
Now that I have a higher activity points to go to senior member but my merit points are lower, what should I do?
Make more good quality posts, try to help others with the information you have, you'll see your merits growing in number overtime. You should give more priority to quality of posts than quantity and then you'll see merits coming to you.

Nice one Op  went through them and these are my answers to the questions.

Quote
Does this also imply to offline backup. Whereby I am needed to always go check by backup seed phrase?
Backing up your wallet doesn't mean you have to re backup over and over again. All you have to do is make sure your keys are safe. You don't have to check your offline backups too frequently but still you have to check them at intervals.

Quote
You need to read, this as music was used to differentiate between Hard fork and soft fork. It is purely satisfying to read if you understand music or song.
The Bitcoin system still remains decentralized however forks which are simply system upgrades can be done at intervals once at least 51% of the developers agree to it.

Quote
I know that BTC is still in the beta software. I also know that it is not good to put all your money in BTC. But, will there ever be an upgrade from the beta version of BTC and when will this happen?
This is simply a caution phrase. Yes Bitcoin beyond doubt is the king of crypto but it still is a crypto currency so there is still a chance of failure only it is very small.

Quote
It is not upto 20 years yet but what Satoshi said is already happening. What exactly did Satoshi say? He made a statement of two faces. If there is large transaction volume, Satoshi is right, if no volume, he is also right  Grin
For me I'll say Satoshi saw that what he created was a break through and believed in it's potential hence that quote.

Quote
Thanks Satoshi, many thought it was a joke but you and the early developers who believed your idea achieved this.
Satoshi's definition of a third party free electronic cash system.

Quote
Which is why re-using of an address is not encouraged. If you keep using one address for all your transactions, you are not enjoying the full value of bitcoin in terms of anonymity.
Creating more wallets for hodling means more keys to keep safe which can be challenging. You can Hodl your Bitcoins in one wallet and kill traces to that wallet through measures like mixing. Satoshi only meant there was no limitation to the number of addresses you control.

Quote
So, miners are a way richer during this mempool congestion. No wonder it persisted.
Kind of.  The faster miners can compute block nonce and hashes the faster they can move to the next block meaning the faster they can earn rewards.

Quote
I wasn't told this when I was a newbie. I had to type the address and even count the alpha-num manually to be very sure my BTC is not going to a wrong destination Angry
Copy and pasting is best. But beware of clipboard viruses

Quote
If the network is as flexible as said above, why developers have misunderstanding leading to hard fork. Soft forking should have always been the solution for improvements
Flexible simply means the majority has to agree before a fork can take place.[ The users are in control]

Quote
Theymos, is this the only criterion for being a moderator? I'll start my reporting job tomorrow  Cool
Hahaha this could just be Theymos way of making us help moderators with their job. Anyways it ain't that bad lol.

Quote
True statement, but it should also be a concern that the centralized p2p is becoming more popular than the original p2p proposed by Satoshi.
Centralizing Bitcoin is almost impossible but not impossible  Smiley

Quote
Too late to be a miner? Those guys are enjoying
Nahhh they aren't enjoying those were the days of the first few blocks. Managing  electrical cost ain't easy man. Like philipma1957 once said "miners are about to be in a whole lot of trouble in a few days " (halving).

Quote
What does Gmaxwell mean by "physically impossible for others to access..." But bitcoin is not a physical currency or asset?
Bitcoin can't be stolen like physical cash everything has to be done electronically.

Quote
The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.
The faster you solve a block hash the more difficult the next block becomes . This controls the rate at which new coins are generated.

Quote
If we say "created out of thin air..." It looks as if the subsidy is not among the 21 million bitcoin in existence.
This refers to the new Bitcoins generated of every successive block. It is a reward for miners accompanied by transaction fees in the block.

Quote
Now that I have a higher activity points to go to senior member but my merit points are lower, what should I do?
I'll consider this a rethorical question since you already know the answer.

Don't forget to keep your keys safe mate 😁

FACTOID FOUR:
"I'm sure that in 20 years there will either be very large transaction volume or no volume." -- Satoshi
What satoshi meant was that if Bitcoin is succeeds then the community supporting it would be huge and if it doesn't then it would be lost in the annal of time. In a nutshell Bitcoin can't do medium either it succeeds or fails.
Quote
If we say "created out of thin air..." It looks as if the subsidy is not among the 21 million bitcoin in existence.
The subsidy and transaction fees makes up the 21million Bitcoin in existence. Subsidy is the amount of Bitcoin that is mined per block.  It's not really out of thin air.miners are competing mathematically and their reward for their work is the subsidy. Bitcoin provides a service and it's token it's bitcoin.
So Bitcoin isn't explicitly created out of thin air since it has cost and values.
Quote
If the network is as flexible as said above, why developers have misunderstanding leading to hard fork. Soft forking should have always been the solution for improvements
the words here has answered your question. Decentralization and absence of government control is a proof it's flexible. Even it's uses and growth plays a role in it's flexibility.

Too lazy to go further about the miners, Halving affects their profits and congestion help mitigate things.Halving reduces reward and the cost of mining increases so they are going to find it harder as time goes on except of transactions fees increases
The difficulty can be seen now in mining Centralization that's on going now.

Well, first off some of these factoids are outdated that means not all information from them are correct anymore and I guess they are random for every user. Just few of them I've seen. It's nice for anyone to have noticed them and as a newbie, you get to learn some new things if you are a good observer.

FACTOID ONE:
Make sure you back up your wallet regularly! Unlike a bank account, nobody can help you if you lose access to your BTC.
My Question or Input:
Does this also imply to offline backup. Whereby I am needed to always go check by backup seed phrase?

You don't have to check often so long you have multiple backups of your seed phrase or keys. If you misplace your seed but can still access your wallet, you can make new backups. Just remember, you're in full control of your wallet. If you lose your keys or back them up incorrectly, you take on the risk.

It's wise to diversify your investments. While Bitcoin is the best crypto investment, it's important to also consider other good investment opportunities. Avoid putting all eggs in one basket.

Yes, it's possible, but it can be a bit stressful because you need to back up all the keys for each wallet you create. However, with the invention of HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) wallets, which allow you to manage multiple addresses and private keys in one system, generated from a single key, you can store your master key and access all other wallets and keys generated from the master seed.

FACTOID EIGHT :
Bitcoin addresses contain a checksum, so it is very unlikely that mistyping an address will cause you to lose money
My Question or Input:
I wasn't told this when I was a newbie. I had to type the address and even count the alpha-num manually to be very sure my BTC is not going to a wrong destination >:
Never type your wallet address because you might lose your money sending it to wrong address. Instead, use the copy button. But be careful of viruses or Trojans that can change your copied address. You can also use the QR code from your wallet, but it's not completely safe. I read that generating QR codes off wallets( using online generators) can be risky because hackers might steal your address, and it's harder to notice.

FACTOID TWENTY :
20. In order to achieve higher forum ranks, you need both activity points and merit points.
My Question or Input:
Now that I have a higher activity points to go to senior member but my merit points are lower, what should I do?
What to do is simple, make good quality post and earn some merits to rank up. There no two way about it.

No, it's not yet too late to become one, but it'd be better to just mine with a pool, as opposed to trying your luck in solo mining...

It looks as if the subsidy is not among the 21 million bitcoin in existence.
It's worth mentioning that "there are currently 19,634,587.5 bitcoins [and counting] in existence".

Check one or two times a year depending on how you have your offline wallet.

FACTOID TWO:
How can the Bitcoin system be changed?
My Question or Input:
You need to read, this as music was used to differentiate between Hard fork and soft fork. It is purely satisfying to read if you understand music or song.

yes

FACTOID THREE:
Remember that Bitcoin is still beta software. Don't put all of your money into BTC!
My Question or Input:
I know that BTC is still in the beta software. I also know that it is not good to put all your money in BTC. But, will there ever be an upgrade from the beta version of BTC and when will this happen?

If we leave beta it will be decades.

If there is large transaction volume, Satoshi is right, if no volume, he is also right  Grin

it has a very large volume now. and in 2029 it likely will still be big

down the road maybe a shift happens to the better algo scrypt which will reduce btc volume a lot.

FACTOID FIVE:
With e-currency based on cryptographic proof, without the need to trust a third party middleman, money can be secure and transactions effortless." -- Satoshi
My Question or Input:
Thanks Satoshi, many thought it was a joke but you and the early developers who believed your idea achieved this.

yeah moving big money across the world 🌍 is easy

FACTOID SIX :
Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.
My Question or Input:
Which is why re-using of an address is not encouraged. If you keep using one address for all your transactions, you are not enjoying the full value of bitcoin in terms of anonymity.

disagree it is not anonymous it is all listed.  there is pretty good software to track and find out address owners if they are used some exceptions if you solo mine and use a virgin address. hit a block most will not know who owns it.

FACTOID SEVEN:
Whoever mines the block which ends up containing your transaction will get its fee.
My Question or Input:
So, miners are a way richer during this mempool congestion. No wonder it persisted.

it will come back again and again and again. as the reward to fee ratio changes every ½ ing.

Top 10 most recognised Users;

I gave you a lot of merits I liked this post.

I don't know how much time you spent formulating the idea and creating this thread. Really - I see this idea as something interesting and worthy of appreciation rather than create one thread and telling everyone that you bought your first bitcoin and telling them your success story.

I checked your merit history - you have 99 transactions for the 231 merit you earn. So I'm not sure what you're worried about when you have an interesting idea to discuss and post something of quality. Right now you only 19 merit to Sr. Member rank - you just need to be patient and try as usual.

Just continue and get your rank in the near future. Good jobs.

If you want to be a moderator, report many posts with accuracy. You will be noticed.
My Question or Input:
As far as I know, this hasn't happened in a long time. It's probably something left from Bitcointalk's early days.
By now, I've reported over 10k posts. Theymos only asked me once to be a Mod, and it was by mistake. I'd love to have a delete button though Cheesy

You'd be reporting posts for the wrong reasons. The right reason is a cleaner forum Wink

I loved these factoids during the time I was a newbie. They seem like tips from old school games, but with the history of Bitcoin and Bitcointalk. However, they have vanished from my account, and I'm not entirely certain why. It could be the uBlock Origin or the ad disabling setting (which was impossible prior to Hero members).

This page includes them all: https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo.

BTW, OP, sent you 10 merits, I hope they suffice for your Senior rank.  Wink

I don't know how possible this could be because looking over how some application to become a merits source are queuing up there, you would know that Theymos doesn't just approve and appoint someone to be mode without him being more convince over everything.
So, reporting a post isn't the guaranteed way of becoming a mod in my opinion, when you keep working for the main reason and purpose of the forum (cleaning) then you wouldn't know when Theymos could get you in as mod but if you look at the list of people who are active reporting post by now Theymos could have made them mod but still they are not mod yet.

I gave you a lot of merits I liked this post.
I was surprised to see such merit numbers. I used to see some posts earn 10, 20 and 50 merits from one user. I never thought I would be among those people. Thank you very much.

If you do this quality of content you will get merits.
Yes, this post has proven something to me. There are alot of people (merit sources) waiting to give merits. But they might not be seeing the right posts to send the merits which makes it look as if merits are scarce. Although, some people have high standards for issuing merits.

BTW, OP, sent you 10 merits, I hope they suffice for your Senior rank.  Wink
Such an exciting promotion within a twinkle of an eye... Thanks alot!

This is right. If someone is reporting with the anticipation of a moderator, when it didn't happen, the person could be frustrated and exit the forum just like the case of Ratimov.

I don't know how much time you spent formulating the idea and creating this thread. Really - I see this idea as something interesting and worthy of appreciation rather than create one thread and telling everyone that you bought your first bitcoin and telling them your success story.
It is something I enjoyed reading every time I appear online. I just decided to compile it for public consumption. I was thinking about the format to use until I stumbled on your Bitcoin myth posts. Thanks

Just continue and get your rank in the near future. Good jobs.
It was nearer than you thought.

Now that you mention it: I also don't see them anymore. It works on my other browser, so I think it is indeed caused by the switch from ABP to uBlock. I switched, because Google/Youtube's annoying changes slowed down my entire computer.
