I remember long ago I had a guy in my karate classes, who was really into addictive stuff. Not drugs, but he would play games all day and had given up school. Well, to the eyes of the rest of us it seemed like he was causing problems to his family, but we had no idea what was happening behind closed doors. Immediately I thought that it was his addiction to games and gambling that must have driven his father into this state. But it was only a little later that his mother confessed to our family that his dad was abusive and they had separated, although up until his death he would force her to not admit the truth.

This taught me that tough situations often times make people become addicts. If you have someone struggling with addiction near you, try to help them before they have to take more responsibility.
