I have just found out that on January 30, 2024, president Tinubu through the vice president Kashim Shettima inauguratimed a 37-member panel on the new minimum wage in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja. I have just noticed this just now.

The Nigeria Labour Congress is demanding for  ₦794000 as the new national minimum wage for workers in the South West geopolitical political zone.

Minimum wage.. 

It looks like they are demanding the impossible. If we are to look at the way the country's economy is and if nothing is to be done about it, then that amount doesn't look too much at all, as we might have to start leaving it this way.
 
The cost of living is really very expensive here in this country, and the mode of transportation is also expensive. Unless the price of goods is lowered a bit and regulated to a level that the middle man can afford, then the N794,000 is okay. 
 
Although their demand is not final, as this amount can also be seen as what they demand as the minimum wage, it can't be left at that level. If the government has to consider it, then they will have to start bargaining from that amount downward. At least they won't be able to settle for something less than N200,000 to N500,000, which if they do, is a little bit fair enough.

The money is too much and don't think 8t is going to work. If dem make it to 200, 000.00 naira I'm very sure the federal government can afford it and the demand will work out for them. This our labour people dem no dey even try at all to help common Nigerians.  Them just dey look for their own pocket,  dem know say at the end of the day the government will call dem and settle dem with money. Thanks for the information, although 794,000 sound unrealistic to ask as minimum wage, but di way wey naira don de turn to shitcurrency, I no go de too surprised if anybody de make any outrageous demands, because di rate wey commodities take de add money for di country de make naira de lose value everyday. After this request, am sure other factions of employees' body will come out to make their demands too.
It should have been lower considering this is a government that cares so much to put little funds in the citizens hands so as to keep them controlled.
The inflation needs more than such demands, am curious to hear the response from government though because I believe this minimum wage issue was brought up earlier but was brushed under the carpet as other news kept rolling in.

This amount na wetin the Labor Union in the South West zone agreed upon, whilst the NLC in the North West Zone agreed on N485,000. E be like say the NLC groups in all the geopolitical zones go agree on wetin dem think say be a fair amount for minimum wage in Nigeria, and report it to the panel for review and for a decision to be made.

Having said that, imo N500,000 na fair amount as minimum wage for Nigeria, just look at the inflation level in the country, standard of living, devaluation of the Naira, etc, e dey very obvious say our minimum wage suppose reach N500,000. But then, the current minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000, and to move from this amount to N500,000 or the amounts mentioned by the NLC of the different zones is unrealistic right now, i think the best the government can go in this review is N100,000.

Op I stand to be corrected as for my opinion despite I am not a beneficiary of their demands I don't see anything wrong considering the situation of things in this country the money is not much, looking from the angle what our senators rep governor and Minister collect as monthly salary excluding the the one they embezzled in the name of project I see this as peanut.

I do not think the inflation needs more than such demand. That minimum wage is too high.

If we use rate of dollar to naira conversion and the price of goods like rice in Goodluck Jonathan time to compare it, ₦500000 is still too much. If I have time to do this, I can calculate it tomorrow.

I can not say what the senators, rep, governors, ministers and president are collecting is not too much, but this is minimum wage. Minimum wage means the lowest amount of money that federal government workers will be collecting. You know that many federal government workers that go to school and that have higher ranks are collecting higher amount than the minimum wage. Just see the minimum wage as the lowest level of a pyramid which shows the reason those people are collecting higher amount of money as they have higher rank and very small in number to the population of other people.

It is the same government that struggled to implement the former 30,000 naira minimum wage that labor Congress is demanding 794,000 from? even before they demanded this they already knew that it was not going to be accepted but they are just choosing to go ahead with whatever action they are taking because of selfish interest. I have long lost trust in a labor Congress because their leaders can be bought and silenced with money and sometimes when they make this sort of demands openly, behind closed doors they accept huge sums of money and then they call off or suspend whatever action that they started because they have been settled. We are tired of all this drama from this our country.

NLC is a joke, I don't still trust that institution because we much as I know they are fighting for their own interests of recognitions. I can bet it that they are paranoid  paranoid and on the grieves that the federal government is not cutting out their own share of the national cake.
After paying minimum wages of #794,000, what then happens to the value rate of our currency? what about the hike of goods and considering the cost of living?

I call this NLC commission a joke because they don't act  intellectually smart enough in demanding an amount that can be deliberated and put to considerations. They feels their negotiation with the federal government would be like the market place where a trader places a goods of #1,000 for #7,000 and expected the customer to price maybe untill they arrives at the actual price of #1,000.

As much as I know, they are speaking for themselves and not the masses and I will not even say that they are fighting for their rights.
How to make Nigeria a better place that would be suitable for every individuals is the key point and what the situation on ground is required and not going to cut your own piece of cake .

We love jokes and the jokes are always the expensive ones that we love doing the most. The same NLC that will hold protest when people need them the most only to stop in the middle and called it off because of one silly excuse meanwhile one or two of them has been promised something at the back.

How many Nigerians are employ under the umbrella of the federal government? The last stats that I read was just 10% of the total population of the Nigerians and if these is eventually approved, the federal government will tax citizens until more than 50% of that money comes back to them and that is going to be another hardship to Nigerians especially people that are not into government work. Imagine buying fuel for ₦1500 or ₦2000 per liter because minimum wage has been increased but you don't get minimum wage, that's bad but good for salary earners under the government.

We shouldn't forget how inflation is going to go up more because more supply of money causes inflation to increase as there is going to be excess money that can i.buy few available things that we don't even produce in Nigeria but import them, another suffering for everyone.

It a welcome development but NLC is no longer a sincere tool to fight the government anti peoples policy so for me before the could demand for such amount I think things should be done in the right way by them, the government maltreatment to the citizens today is because of the inability of NLC to act, so how are they going to get such money from the government when their leaders are biased and compromised by the government, NLC ceased to exist when Adams oshiomole left office, since the inception of APC led government, the power of the NLC had been brought to zero.

Ordinarily if labour were to be active, their demand would have been considered by the government, but it is not possible again because the government sees NLC as an unserious people because of their love for bribe, so labour should desist from such deceit because it won't see the light of the day.

Sincerely speaking, the regional demand of N794000 minimum wage by Nigeria labour congress for only workers in southwest geopolitical zone is very condemnable. It shows that Nigeria labour congress is trabalistic and bias in her demand for only workers in southwest geopolitical zone and this is one of the major problem in Nigeria. If their demands is granted for only workers in southwest geopolitical zone what will now happen to workers in other geopolitical regions who are facing the same economic hardship. I think there should parallel demands for the minimum wage across the country instead of making demands for only southwest geopolitical zone.

Things like this are not debatable, if it was the politicians who wanted to fix their salaries it would be possible but for the remaining people who are not politicians, it would be possible. the reality of this whole thing is that even 100k the government will not agree to talk more than 700k. that will come in years to come. and even when the government decides to increase the minimum wage it will affect the price of commodities too that is how Nigeria works if there is any increase people will feel like the civil servants have money and then the increment becomes invalid when it comes to spending it. as far as am concern the labor is not serious in this country because how will the government be shutting labor up when the demands of the people have not be met. they have collected too many bribes and have lost their power.

This look highly impossible. I don't think government can afford this amount for minimum wage unless if they want to sell Nigeria itself by borrowing again from US to pay. The present economy does not even support them paying
thiss huge amount. It will even cause more problem to the masses by increasing the iñflation rate to the extreme.its better the government to work on stabilizing the economy Than invcrsesing the minimum wage to this amount.

After seeing the news I just shake my head, because I know say na something wey dey no go fit achieve, that amount is just too higher and the government won’t even take them serious, how are they going to request that amount of money as minimum wages it sounds somehow to me and the NLC making the request are not serious, maybe they just want to use us to play politics again just as dey do before, they know you can’t achieve what they are requesting for, why don’t they make realistic demand.

What I was expecting is at least minimum wage should be 100k -150k based on the impact of inflation in the country but 794k is too much nah! The mot concerning thing here is the fact that it's not just for the whole workers in the country oo, it just for the south west worker, it's that not also selfishness?

We are complaining about the present leadership is bad, but the grass root is even more bad than the upper calibers, if the NLC can demand such for just a region then what should they demand for the whole country, this is just so crazy the way the country is driving it's politics I can't just keep an eye on it anymore because it will end up depressing me as a political aspirant.

Recently I have come to realize that what President tinubu said during his campaign that he will recruit 10 million youths has been accomplished but we cannot notice it because it has been swept under carpet by the grass root leaders, i will continue this conversation next time but back to the initial discussion. the minimum wage is too much and from my perception about our government its not even one bit possible, dem go complain tire but e no go work.

If you compare the rate of things in the country where each day the price of goods and services continues to go higher, it's good for workers to be paid such an amount of salary, I kind of think the NLC is strategically demanding such an amount of money, at least even if the Federal government did not grant them exactly the amount requested, it will be something still reasonable should Federal finally take it into consideration.However, this is not the solution to the problem we are facing right now in Nigeria.

Let me use Jonathan time for the comparison.

Bag of rice was ₦7000
Bag of rice now ₦80000
Minimum wage was ₦18000
If it is compared in relation to minimum wage, ₦205714 should be the minimum wage now.

Dollar was ₦150 at the time
Now ₦1560
If minimum wage was ₦1800
Comparing them, the minimum wage should be ₦187200.

I guess if we compare other goods, the result will be around ₦180000 to ₦250000. They should not expect the federal government to pay more than that. But things are getting expensive day by day which can alter my calculation.

It doesn't look like we are going to see any minimum wage increase any time soon. We have a government that doesn't listen. Even the NLC is in romance with the government. There are carrying out any strategies to force the government to listen to them. Some of these strategies which may include, collective bargaining, public awareness campaigns like - rallies, protests, petitions. Also, lobbying lawmakers, policymakers and collaborating other labor organizations, community groups, and advocacy organizations to advocate for minimum wage increase.

Today, they will plan a peaceful protest and when it is almost time to converge, they will announce that it has been cancelled for whatever reason best known to them.

As for me, there is no difference between the government in charge of this country and the NCL leadership.
