It might be a funny situation and also something that will give alot of people concern. I see some people given merit in some reasonable post and after then there where lots of post that didn't make much sense, and the person who have merited such user became angry at himself, to have given merit to such person. Like he is now promoting a shit poster, sometimes they feel like to Demerit such user.

so now my question is, if you have reached a full member or any other position and someone decides to Demerit you and you lost your position how will you feel?  Grin

Like any other person, I will feel angry, especially if I worked hard to get them. Those points are earned if your topics are worth them, so why do you have to lose them again?
But let us assume that it is approved by the  forum
You may lose points for trivial reasons, just because another member disagrees with you or does not understand what you want to say about a topic, and chaos will prevail.

Merit's goal is to encourage members of the community to have quality post.

The basic principle related to it is the concept of positive reinforcement.  The merit serve as a reward or chance to get a reward for the members to establish the habit of posting relevant information.  Once posting quality post becomes a habit, then it will benefit Bitcointalk as a whole.

The demerit, the one that you are proposing, is the opposite.  It is a negative reinforcement.  This means that instead of rewarding good behavior, you punish undesired behaviors.  The problem of having both system (the negative and positive reinforcement) is the chance of getting one.  What I mean is if the demerit system has a higher chance of getting than the merit system, then members will be discouraged to post.  They will play safe and most of them will limit their posting.  Instead of being beneficial to the community, the discussions will die eventually because no one wants to be punished by posting their thought.
