Shohei Ohtani Gambling Saga

I was just curious about if anyone of you guys have been following this Shohei Ohtani gambling saga/controversy going on right now?  This is a HUGE deal in the world of sports, and of course specifically in Major League Baseball.  If you aren't familiar with who Shohei Ohtani is, he's a Japanese born MEGA star in major league baseball.  He's both a pitcher and someone who hits, which in the world of baseball is VERY rare.  No since the legendary Babe Ruth have we've seen such a player who's so great at doing both.  He's become the face of baseball which is what makes all of this all the more crazy.

I wanted to get everyone's thoughts.

Of course, thank you for bringing her, she is a phenomenon who has even been unanimous MVP twice, which is in itself a rarity and it goes without saying that she has the most expensive contract in sports $700,000,000 for 10 years.

Last night I saw a summary of the press conference he gave for the betting case, the issue here is his translator and also best friend, he made transfers from the player's account for around +$4 million, it is a matter under investigation, first He initially said that the player did know, but then he said that he was not aware. Investigations are being conducted by FBI, but so far we can't say the athlete is guilty in this case, because he may have been betrayed by his close friend who was using his money to place bets on sports, although none of them so far were pointed to have been placed on baseball matches. Personally, I would like to believe the japanese athlete is innocent and that he didn't know about anything, what isn't hard to assume, anyway, since we know addicted gamblers are capable of doing anything in order to feed their addictions, including to betray and put their closest ones in very delicate situations which can completely destroy their reputations.

Let's see what the next news are going to bring us regards this case. In every cases, I just hope the truth prevails!

I haven't followed it until I saw the news that he's released a statement telling that he's in no way addicted to gambling. Yeah, it was his interpreter that's stealing his money but we all know how these cover ups happen when the main athlete or character has been accused or proven to do something that's against to the will of their fans. Maybe, it was a real thing that he's into gambling and having this much money secured for 10 years, you'd surely just retire after your contract and can do that much with this kind of money. This scandal is big because of the contract that he's got and it's on a different level from the celebrities being reported having sums of debts in Vegas. I hope that he won't be drowning himself into fame and money and will be wise on how he's going to retain his popularity as with simple or one mistake, his career might drop dead.

Based from the reports, it was his Interpreter, Mizuhara who did the act of betting but using Ohtani's account. The problem was it was his account that had been used. And Ohtani firmly said that he had never bet on baseball nor sent money to any bookmaker.
With his multi-million dollar deal with Dodgers, definitely this will make a noise in the world of baseball. Considering the fact that he is the current superstar in baseball today, his actions will be under the microscope.

But knowing Japanese people, they are one of the honest people. We may see the truth later on about this saga. But I think, Dodgers and other people surrounding Ohtani will protect him at all cost considering his career in baseball. He is still too young to be charged as it can ruin his career.

From all information I have read from this yet unraveled story that's still under serious investigation and pending the outcome of investigation all I can say is that Ohtani is just one guy that is for now a victim of one who out of trust trusted his financial account to his gambling addictive friend. I believe his friend is learned enough to know the consequences of his actions in using Ohtani's account to fund a gambling account  but still went ahead without hesitation, that's what addiction can make of any man. They always damn the impending consequences of their actions could erupt.

I may no be that disposed to the world of baseball sport but from the comments of fans I see this young man is a masterpiece of what he does as a player and for his career he's too young to encounter such a dramatic threatening situation and seeing that he has no gambling history I hope that after all has been said and done the findings from the investigation will be that he's innocent of all this allegations.

The situation is definitely suspect. Thats a lot of money to be moving around for someone who is supposedly your translator. I can’t say I really care though as long as he was betting on himself and not against his team. The real tragedy remains that Pete Rose still isn’t in the Hall of Fame.

Yes it does sound like it's absurd to accuse someone of stealing when all the safeguards are there but that's not really uncommon. There are many cases when perpetrators continue to steal victim's money from their bank without them knowing and only finds out months after.

Ohtani probably trust his guy too much or just stupid and gullible when it comes to money.

I very rarely give baseball any attention during this period of the year as what could happen that it could catch my interest? But now it seems I was missing a huge story, so thanks from bringing it up, but at this moment it is difficult to say whether he is guilty or not, right now I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, as it seems Mizuhara and Ohtani were very close, so it is entirely possible Ohtani trusted the guy so much that he never thought Mizuhara could abuse his position to such an extent and involve him in such a massive scandal.

Exactly, I don't give to flying fcks really, unless you're betting against your own team.  I mean I guess I don't love the idea of someone betting on their own games, unless it's just like take your team at the ML.  Otherwise it can get dicey.  Also, agreed..Pete has served his time, it's time to let the man in.  He's not getting any younger.  I mean betting baseball isn't nearly as bad as the steroid era HOFr's, and I think most of them should prob get in some way, some how.  I wonder how popular gambling is in Japan.

Most seem to think his translator is being the ultimate friend and taking the fall for his buddy.  Which, Ohtani just signed a 700 million dollar contract, so it only makes sense for all parties involved.  It's an odd situation.  

These guys need to learn how to bet in a smart fashion.  They could learn a few lessons from this particular board lol.
