Lately,  majority of the discussion on Meta board as been about the Merit system especially on the low supply of merits with some Reputable members applying for merit sources though Theymos have not accepted anyone or spoken about the merit system for long and we all still await his response.t

While there is a need for a new merit source in order to replace those merit sources who are no longer available and also increase merit allocation of some sources in the LB or maybe accept some LB merit source request, This is not the main issue to be frank I accept that lack of quality post have affected how merit are being distributed. Here is a stat from DdmrDdmr Merit Dashboard


This is the amount of merit distributed monthly since the merit system started in January 2018 till now March 2024 which has 14,303 as at when this post was made.

This shows there are much merits in fact even more merits being un sent since alot of members have rank up and earn more merits therefore increasing their sMerits.

Aside this, I accept that low quality of post have been the main reason why there are lack of distributed merits because when I joined this forum I actually thought the merit system was really unfair for beginners but to be frank  I was wrong but never knew till I went through this Fillippone : Ranking up is possible! 2900 Merits earned in less than 12 months!My 11 Hints! and I Thank God i saw this thread which made me see that some top members of this forum did not find it easy when they joined this forum as they are beginners like us but they actually send their time learning and doing things well.

To be frank its important to sometimes go through your post history in order to identify your flaws in becoming a better poster because when I do this, I`m usually ashamed of my post quality and will want to do better.
Though you are expected to continue learning because only through this you can become more knowledgeable to become better.

You have written well but don't you think your solution is the same as the review that offered by The Sceptical Chymist? There is also another thread where users can submit a topic that they feel is meritable for review?
In my estimation though, the merit sources applications requests show be given speedy replies. I have read more than 3 merits sources requests that is yet to get a response from the administrators. In my local board there have been two requests. I do not know the modalities for acceptance but wishing we see new merit sources soon.

Op, your generosity could be more valuable in this thread-- from my calculations, you have less than 60 smerits left, you're not a merit source, and will eventually burn out on your own. Your intentions may be good, but I believe that too many merit giveaway threads will fertilise the soil for account farms by allowing them to pick merits from multiple source rather than just one.

Second, you are from the Nigeria Local Board, where merit is scarce and there is no Merit source, and your generosity may mean a lot to the lower-ranking members there as well.

I am not against your thread; I am simply thinking outside the box, and you can do whatever you want with your merit.

Op's thread isn't about sending merits to users who post their profile link, but it is about "post improvement review", which makes it even weird, what critieria are you going to use to decide if the users who take up your offer are making quality posts or not.

There are basic posting etiquettes, like paragraphing, punctuations, avoiding pyramid quotes, good grammar (if possible), etc, other than that, it is just about genuinely contributing in your own way, based on your own level of knowledge, and users do not need people to go through their post history to tell them that, they are going to learn that on their own the longer they stay in the forum.

I will not say you cannot give the smerit quota you have but how your evaluate or know that the thread is a high quality post and low quality post. I mean the factor to consider. And another thing again you are not a merit source so this your thread can't withstand with the pressure that will come. Ask the merit sources how the application to review post dropping in their pm or threads. Op you are initiating what you can't accomplished or implement because you are not a merit source and you are creating a thread to review thread and at the end you be a deceiver because when people drop their application, they will be waiting to see their Merit and when it doesn't come to pass then you become a deceiver.

And don't think merit sources will come here to merit people for you because they have their own target of audience and this your type of thread has been created in this forum many time and not has survive since they are not merit sources.

Yes with time every body will learn but this will make it more faster since it's giving all, the incentives to observe their post

This is not a bad idea if you have the time and skills. You could go through a member's post, identify flaws and send recommendations to enable him to improve. Some members might find it very helpful but you will have some challenges. First, the term quality post is subjective. A post that you see as quality might be generic or common to another user. So you might face the challenge of defining the term quality post.

If you compare your primary school work with your high school performance there will be a great difference, hence there is no need to be ashamed of your past posts. But it becomes a problem when a member's post quality remains the same or keeps depreciating. Giving of merit will always remain subjective (based on the merit source discretion) and some merit sources are already doing post reviews and others might also consider starting if they have the time. It is important to put some effort into our posts and merit sources should also be generous enough to give merits even when the post might not get to the maximum standard they have set.

What I think you should do is to spend your smerits whenever you see good posts. There are a lot of those on the forum.   [Self Moderated] In Merits, Count Down To Your Next Rank.. is still very active. You can as well give out smerits there.

If the purpose of this thread is to review other users posts and tell them their mistakes, then I don’t know how effective it will be. There are many threads on posting etiquette and how to make quality posts in the Beginners and Help section, a person who is unwilling to learn should not be bothered with.

Am not completely against your idea, but i don't see the need in making a review on someone who is not planning to rank up and or someone who is and there's nothing to give as merits to such user after applying, though you already stated that there's a chance for a change in the rules, but i consider these as nothing much more than what others already have been doing by meriting their quality posts when they apply for such, also come to think of this, you're not a merit source, though this shouldn't be a barrier, but on what condition will you review a profile and accept such as a quality posts, or suggest to the user to improve on further.

I usually see this kind of thread from DT that send users a neutral feedback that related to poor post quality.

Your thread is good for those users that still don’t have any idea how to improve post quality or how to post that is merit worthy but you should create a criteria such as rank requirements, merit count and so on to make your thread straightforward to potential applicants.

I can't say that he is very strict about sending merits; he does not have favorites, so those who want to receive additional, and for some very desirable merits, have a good chance. But OP, seeing how generously you give merits to so many people, I just wonder how you managed to maintain such a reserve, coming from Igebotz's post? My hands are literally itching, and I usually give everything away at once.

Your intention is good which I understand but it would be much better if you also report the post that you have reviewed to the thread thay Igebotz provided. That thread serves its purpose since it was started so if you think that the post that you have reviewed deserves a merit then you can post it there instead of reviewing it alone. I would have done it if I am the one who wants to do this kind of thing to review posts of other forum members.

You have a great idea here, if there is a thread for profile and/ or post review and someone applies for a post review it will increase the urge for quality posting and perhaps a lot of people have contributed greatly on merit distribution but your idea is still fresh.

So on a personal level what I think about this thread or post is that it should be considered as a proposal first instead of the actual intention because this thread will be filled with deliberation whether it's a good idea or not hence what I suggest it you create another thread strictly for the post review application, but that will only be on how much merit source agree to this idea.

I am always open to the constructive criticism whether it's positive or negative, since day 1 I never look after the merits but I keep wondering whether my posts or useful or I am just another mediocre poster so I am going to use this opportunity and let's find out what OP offers in terms of review.

OP, I'm starting to wonder if you made this thread for debates or post reviews?. It might have been better to ask for others' opinions in a first thread. As Churchillvv mentioned, the discussion has shifted, so if you want to focus on post reviews, consider creating a new thread and moderating it yourself to prevent unnecessary discussions. If you want to share merits after a review, that's okay, but since you're not a merit source, your merits might not be enough. Following Igebotz's suggestion, you can simply report any quality posts you find on LoyceV's thread. It might be better if you report the posts instead, so a merit source can assess them to avoid accusations of account farming, as seen in some other merit or review threads.

I'm not sure what's annoying about a civil discussion on a forum - if I understand well, the primary aim of the thread is to check person profiles and provide your opinion without giving merit?

So it's a "your post is good, keep it up thing"?

If someone from the technical board submits a profile to you, how will you decide if it is good or bad? This is simply an honest question.

I usually don't post on B&H but I'm quite interested in this topic.
