Those darknet exchanges, how do they get customers? Example, if someone starts a new BTC exchange on Tor - not a mixer for washing but for altcoins trading - where do they announce it? I do not understand how they expect to get users/customers if nobody knows they exist. Do they do it here? I know people with surface-net exchanges do announce it here, but how are these darknet exchanges getting users? Do they also announce on forums? Twitter? Discord? I am curious as to how they manage to stay in business? Do they even get traffic?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by darknet exchanges? There are centralized and decentralized exchanges that operate in the crypto space, both are very legal and operate in the open. Only difference is one is regulated by the government and the other is not.

A "darknet" site, as I understand it, is a site that's accessible only with the usage of anonymization protocols like Tor. I am not aware of one exchange that runs exclusively through the Tor network.

Those darknet exchanges, how do they get customers? Example, if someone starts a new BTC exchange on Tor - not a mixer for washing but for altcoins trading - where do they announce it?
This forum is a pretty good place to start. You can gain reputation by paying a manager to run campaigns. For example, an exchange that does this is eXch, and it's gained trust last year, even though it's running for 10 years.

1. By using privacy leaning sites or projects like kycnot.me
2. The clearnet is not the only place with customers or where they can advertise. There are very many sites, marketplaces and forums where they can advertise from in the dark web. In fact, they are likely to get way more customers from the dark web than the clearnet.

A "darknet" site, as I understand it, is a site that's accessible only with the usage of anonymization protocols like Tor. I am not aware of one exchange that runs exclusively through the Tor network.
They do exist

Yes kycnotme is quite known now . Advertising over other darknet forums would attract more customers surely, but, won't many of those be the ones with gains through illicit means? Do people who wish to trade cryptocurrencies but not on KYC-insisting websites seek such darknet exchanges just for privacy reasons? I mean is there an audience for that?

I suppose it would. Why do you think that would be a problem?  More people using such exchanges sounds good for business, right?

You do not need a darknet exchange just for privacy reasons. There are still clearnet centralized exchanges that do not require KYC up to certain amounts.

won't the government classify them as illegal exchanges like operating without a license just like the case of Binance and a few others?
i would assume though that the owner of the clearnet version of their exchange is just different from the owner of the Onion domain exchange.

its still a clever way to promote the darknet exchange using the clearnet exchange in the forum. but i'm not sure why this isn't yet targeted by the government while the mixers are.

Using darknet exchanges as mixers is unwise. There is not telling if the exchange is going to use the same BTC address to send you your coins back. That is the reason these exchanges are not targeted. Still running a non-KYC exchange on clearnet is a very bad idea. But I know of some, I wonder how and where are they hosted, so brazen!

I'm not that familiar with most darknet forums but I'd say advertising on clearnet is more likely to bring more people in because there are more crypto users on clearnet. TBF, wherever you advertise your exchange, it is most likely gonna heard of perpetrators once it become well known. For instance binance and kucoin being accused of facilitating billions of illicit funds + even the fiat fintechs are being used for scams and whatnot.

OFC, and many are uncomfortable on account lock ups based on suspicions which you don't have to be a huge privacy dude for.

Altcoins, you can  go with Monero.

With other altcoins, their blockchains are centralized, can be halted anytime and traceable too. It does not help you if you believe that using Tor can help you to gain privacy with altcoin blockchains.

There are darknet sites and announcements can be there. Like mixers, they can move from Bitcointalk (not a darknet forum) to other forums and some can be darknet forums.

Do you think darknet exchanges are created to help criminals? it means you didn't read the terms of exchanges. They're actually only help you to trade and protect your privacy, their services aren't to protect criminals. What ordinary people think is less important, and what those who pass and enforce laws think is much more important. Everything that "they" can't control is somehow illegal and bad, and all those who try to preserve their privacy (without having any bad plans) are suspects that are worth monitoring.

When we look at how the authorities around the world treat Bitcoin, we can see that apart from China and a few other "democratic" countries, no one is bothered when people trade with it with mandatory KYC - but there is a lot of bother when Bitcoin is mentioned as a decentralized cryptocurrency.

The fact that you can make a transaction between wallet A and wallet B without "them" being able to control it and identify the sender and recipient has been their nightmare since the day Satoshi let the genie out of the bottle.

Thank you for your response, but the query is not regarding privacy of coins or during transfer.

Lol, there are exchanges on darknet that are outright claiming to be only for criminals. Also, I never said  all darknet exchanges are created to help criminals, but all darknet exchanges - or any exchange for that matter if it does not conduct KYC IS automatically assumed to be aiding criminal enterprises by law enforcements of most countries. Not sure in which conuntry you live in, but an unregulated exchange - buried deep under onion rings or out in your face IS considered to be an illegal shop if it does not conduct KYC.

My query was not about what they do but how they get customers.
