Well this is case to case basis and if you know you are living on flood prone area then you should think about more ideal way to store your private key safely.

If you are a whale or just have plenty of balances stored in your wallet then its better to have a vault which is hard to carry and engrave your private key on a metal or anything same like element then put it there for sure you can assure safety whatever calamity comes on your place.

But for sure we can see a lot of interesting ideas from other people here since for sure they have creative ideas about how they can store their private key to avoid such unfortunate loss during on bad situations.

Yeah just as @MiaChloe replied , there are no perfect way to store your seed phrase but there's one is more safer than the other which is the cold storage format . Even if you tattooed it it might fade (-off)
About the encryption, if encrypted  then there should  be some combination to decipher which will also need to be saved and boom we are back to the cycle again .....
If we are to look at all possibilities and and factors then there would be no perfect ways but for sure we will always have a method that is supreme over the other

I agree that Titanium or stainless steel or steel storage methods for seed phrases doesn't offer 100% guarantee. No storage method does. Here's my point, these metals are designed to withstand flooding and remain intact even in the event of earthquakes or building collapses. Secondly, in the event that the flood moves it away from its location, there are identification markers or tracking systems that can be use on the storage can which can aid in their recovery. Therefore, if we live in areas that are prone to such disasters, we should live with disaster preparedness and recovery plans in mind. These plans should include measures for securing and protecting backup storage locations which have already been stated, as well as procedures for data retrieval and restoration in the event of a disaster. Lastly, because these disasters do not happen simultaneously across a whole country, we should secure them in multiple storage locations.

Its a very bad idea to use any online means to save our seed for backup, they are centralized and anyone can spy into their server and fish out users informations and sensitive data against them, this will be the only means i can refer someone to use in saving his seeds for backup as already discussed on several occasions by some forum members.

I want to believe that not all countries are being affected and for the ones affected, such is prone on specific areas, most importantly, we have to consider an alternative means to using any storage means, that is, we should have at least two means where we have our seeds backed up, but using online storage is not a recommendation to consider.

Natural disasters are very common in some parts of the world but luckily I am from a country where such things don't happen since I was born I have never seen a real Tornado that tears things apart like in other countries, any earthquake and others either.

The worst that can happen here is a fire outbreak and in this case, I am always cautious with fire, still, anything can happen, and the safest option that I know of is stainless steel.

Don't you think that you are neglecting the fact that in situations like natural disasters or any unplanned event, the first thing you would think about is your safety? You least concern would be on how you will manage to escape that scenario and run to a safe zone. So how they would you worry about taking your bag along? If we are being realistic, the idea of natural disasters stands again as a threat to the security of our funds. How then do we minimize these risk? This is a very smart question but I think when you buy a hardware wallet or an airgap device for storage or your coins, the reason for backing up of your wallet is not to discard the hardware wallet right, the back up is just a preventive measures and caution should incase you loss access to your wallet. In a situation like this, proper care of your hardware wallet should be a priority to keep your coins safe, make sure your hardware wallet is in good condition and be ready to access quickly when you need it and not just the seed phrase back up alone.

As for the seed phrase, online storage system is very unsafe, the moment your documents touches the internet, just know that it's not longer safe and that's why offline storage remain the best way. If you are coming from a place where natural disaster happen a lot, I think storing your coins in another country is not bad. I still remember in one of Vitalik Buterin interview how he got rid of Shiba that was sent to his wallet address. Shiba was airdrop to him and was worth Billions of dollars but he didn't have access to that wallet address as it also contain some ether in the wallet. It was a cold wallet that was key divided, half of key was with him and the remaining was with his family in Canada, he has to put calls through to get the half of the keys before he was able to send out these coins and donanted it to India for relief fund for Covid.

Nice idea though, but then seed phrase shouldn't be something we have to put in a package that we have to be carrying all around  wherever we go, we can easily misplace it that way. It could be like shooting oneself on the foot.

Whatever we chose to hide in our seed phrase should be something durable and sustainable with time, which means an object or anything that can't easily get broken or destroyed.

For persons living in natural disasters recurrent topographies using the metallic seed phrase storage pattern. Just to support what you said and to make it more difficult for an hacker to steal the seed phrase. I think it would be wise to split the seed phrase into three parts, encrypt each with a password and upload to three different cloud hosting services. By so doing it minimizes the risks of having the funds stolen, because there's no way the three cloud hosting services are going to suffer data breaches at the same time, so if one is compromised, the other two will still be safe.

First of all, I personally have a few of my wallet phrases on a piece of paper, which I personally laminated and made water-proof in order to save them from water damage and the rest of them.
 
So even if the house or the place I saved is flooded, as long as the building doesn't break down and after the flood you can go back in, there is a guarantee that you will still keep it in good shape.

You've got a sensitive view over this thread Op, storing seed phrases online isn't a bad one to me as may say.
I can actually suggest that we can store our seed phrases in an online storage account that's not associated or linked with any internet activities nor to be associated with an internet Alc accounts so that it can be assumed encrypted on a privacy mode which can't be lingered to linkages of hackers.
Sometimes ago, i read a thread where someone was suggesting that we can also install our seed phrases customizingly on the steels or wooden objects in a case of mistrust to remember where it was stored.
Nothing more than the reality fact because such disasters can still strike to affect such nature of seed phrase storage system.
On a ridiculous thinking, why should we have that insightment fear of loosing our funds if weve your seed phrase stored online While the same assets funds we're protecting is in a digital and online format? If you are living in a place where natural disaster is common occurrence then having one backup far away from your location is mandatory, and the type of backup can depend on what kind of amount we keep in that wallet, if it's something big then having one deposit locker from nearby region where it's free from such events can be one of the solution and for smaller amounts, try the DIY backup methods like Soda can, engraving on metal sheets and keep them in a place where you can access instantly when you are going to move from your locality.

Using pgp Encryption for  your keys to store online in this case only you can decrypt it using your private key.
Now, your private key could be taken offline and you can have multiples copies of it with no tag of "private key" attached, use different  methods of cold storage you feel like using especially  this

For me you should have multiple backups in different locations just to be sure at the same time it is secure, although we can't escape natural disaster having multiple backups and in different locations giving you a chance to be able to be safe, on natural disaster, regarding online backups you really don't have control over it since you don't have power over the devices and network infrastructures which hacker have chance to break the securities,

Steel washers are definitely the way to go here. I don't like steel sheets because they have very sharp corners that you could needlessly cut yourself on. At the very least, the corners would need to be made rounded or in an elliptical shape but that is quite hard to get right if you don't know how to do it. I disagree with that, if you are experiencing an earthquake, a fire, a flood, a bombing or a landside this tool won't be enough efficient to protect your seed, because even if it's not destroyed you're very likely to lose it in all the rubble.

Nice point, I'm proud to say that I'm one of those people, somehow, I feel that offline storage can be met with some uncertainties, and storing them online has its own limitations, as a programmer I do the encryption myself and store it both offline and online in case of emergencies. I thank God that you said video and not reality. I have not experienced earthquake in my State in Nigeria. But have experienced flood time without number and nobody can tell me anything about flood. I see what you mean, laminated paper is better than plain paper. But laminating is also not free. And there is also a security risk if someone else will do it for you.  On the other hand, you don't have to buy washers if they are expensive for you (although I don't think it's a big expense), you can use any piece of scrap metal from stainless steel, and you don't have to worry about floods or fires anymore.  Your seed phrase will survive both.

Lamination? Regular clear scoth tape isn't much worse than this. It costs a penny, no additional equipment is required (as with lamination), you can do it without outside help. You can cover it in several layers if you want more reliability. Paper covered with tape will no longer be exposed to water.

A more exotic way: fill the paper with epoxy resin (after shaping it into a frame). This method will be even better than lamination.

Laminated paper or cardboard should be considered a temporary quick fix solution, not for long-term storage or protection from most natural disasters.

I'm in a country where every year we have natural disasters the worst are typhoons and floods, our country recorded one of the worst typhoons in modern history and I have a friend who experienced this and when I asked him if he had saved his seed phrase he told me yes because he has a photographic memory and he had memorized his 12 words seed phrase before that worst flood hit their region.

But not everyone has a photographic memory so they have to think of ways to store their seed phrase, I have mine stored in hardware and that hardware is stored in a safe, I wish I also had that photographic memory so I can keep store my seed phrase, but it's still better to have it stored in a place you think will be safe in case of national disasters.

Clever I guess, it would work on me for sure it's a good idea for sure, But on something like a natural disaster like a tsunami, you would easily lose thing pencil including your seed phrase. It doesn't seem entirely reasonable to store the security system seed phase written on paper by carving inside a wooden pencil. This security system will not provide your backup at all in case you consider a natural disaster area. If for any reason your device is damaged or lost or your device backup is lost in a natural disaster then you cannot recover your lost seed phase through this system.

If I live in a place where it is prone to flood then I would make a backup of my seed phrase online but before that, the seed phrase should be encrypted first before saving it online which I tried already and also have a backup of my seed phrase stored in my portable SSD which I saved without connecting to the internet. If you are living in a country where natural disasters happen regularly, before you back up your seed phrase or private key, you have to do your research to know the places in your country where natural disasters usually happen so that you will not back up your seed phrase or private key in those places. When you are backing up your seed phrase or private key, back it up on a flash drive and keep it in different locations known to you so that when you lose access to anyone, you will be left with plenty of options if you want to access your seed phrase or private key to get access to your wallet.

In my own opinion, I think the best way to backup our seed phrase against natural disaster is by saving it in our Gmail account I think that's the most reliable and secured way to keep our documents save in terms of natural disaster, so that even if your cellphone got spoilt you can still buy a new cellphone and log in the email and you will see that all the documents you saved before the disaster is still safe and secured just exactly the way you kept it but you must make sure that the email you saved them is a special one and make sure you have the password off hand.

Backing up your seed phrase in Gmail could have been a good idea. Even though there was a natural disaster and you lost your phone, you could easily get access to your seed phrase because you stored it online. But because of malware, it is not good to back up your seed phrase in Gmail because if your computer is affected by malware, someone else can get access to your Gmail and also have access to your seed phrase.

this is what i do now. i store several parts of my seed phrases in 3 online storage platforms, and i put a number on each part to prevent confusion when putting them together. i think this is one safe way to store your seed phrases and it's much easier than having to write them down on paper and store them somewhere else.

As long as it is online, you can be hacked and your assets will be stolen by the attacker, what online storage platforms are you talking about, and are these storage platforms in the same device. If you are putting together your own pattern of security, then mind you that you are inviting trouble, there is no safer way than writing down your seed phrase on paper or carving it on a steel plate.

Storing it online maybe with phone or a laptop is also risky because these gadgets can be stolen,  wherever it is stored online can also be hacked that is why storing seed phrase online,  phone , or the computer is not advisable. Right now we are talking about natural disasters, these are occurrence that are not certain if it will even occur.  I still consider writing seed phrase on a note and store in the best and safe place is the best way to store seed phrase.  When it is stored offline in a safe place that no one can have access to it, it will surely remain their but in this present time Internet is not safe anymore because hackers are everywhere trying to break into people's privacy to get what they want.

Online storage might be convenient but it's not recommendable. Having your seed phrase on your mobile phone, laptop, email and cloud storage are not safe. A hacker can remotely deploy a malware and steal it. The safest method of storing the seed phrase is offline, write it down on a clean sheet of paper or use a cryptosteel and keep it somewhere very safe. Even when your device is spoilt, lost or stolen, you can always import the seed phrase into a new device and access your funds.
